Abstract:
Students enter school with a vast range of differences, which together determine how well and how fast they will learn at school. School systems around the world are thus faced with the challenge of how to organise learning for large numbers of students while at the same time responding to the diverse needs of each one of them. This is about ensuring that each student receives an optimal learning experience, while also tackling well-documented educational inequalities. "Adaptive teaching" is a promising approach to address the challenge of student heterogenity in the classroom. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Anchoring vignettes are item batteries especially designed for correcting responses that might be affected by incomparability. This article investigates the effects of anchoring vignettes on the validity of student self-report data in 64 cultures. Using secondary data analysis from the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), we checked the validity of ratings on vignette questions, and investigated how rescaled item responses of two student scales, Teacher Support and Classroom Management, enhanced comparability and predictive validity. The main findings include that (a) responses to vignette questions represent valid individual and cultural differences; in particular, violations in these responses (i.e., misorderings) are related to low socioeconomic status and low cognitive sophistication; (b) the rescaled responses tend to show higher levels of comparability; and (c) the associations of rescaled Teacher Support and Classroom Management with math achievement, Student-Oriented Instruction, and Teacher-Directed Instruction are slightly different from raw scores of the two target constructs, and the associations with rescaled scores seem to be more in line with the literature. Namely, the associations among all self-report Likerttype scales are weaker with rescaled scores, presumably reducing common method variance, and both rescaled scale scores are more positively related to math achievement. The country ranking also changes substantially; in particular, Asian cultures top the ranking on Teacher Support after rescaling. However, anchoring vignettes are not a cure-all in solving measurement bias in crosscultural surveys; we discuss the technicality and directions for further research on this technique. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The article reflects on a pilot teacher training programme in Tanzania, where videos are used for implementing new teaching methods, but also for initiating a discourse about corporal punishment. The culture of instruction in Tanzania is strictly based on a teacher-centred approach which leaves all activity to the teacher and turns students into passive listeners. In most cases, teachers deal with up to 80 students in one classroom. Therefore, discipline is an important matter of instruction and many teachers still use corporal punishment that is widely accepted in Tanzania. The launched training programme has the aim of implementing learner-centred teaching methods without using corporal punishment and offers Tanzanian teachers the possibility to participate in a workshop that connects these methods with subject-related topics. In the English teaching workshop, the facilitator used filmed English lessons from a German school to discuss with the participants both the application of learner-centred methods and the absence of corporal punishment. The use of these German videos shows advantages but also limitations that are strongly related to the European versus African setting. The article discusses these dimensions on the basis of data that are generated by ethnographical observation and audiotranscripts of the piloted workshop. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
A growing body of research compares educational processes and outcomes cross-nationally, but up to now there are only few studies on teachers and their expertise involving more than a handful of countries. Drawing on data from the OECD-Teaching and Learning International Survey the present chapter aims at filling this research gap. It compares different aspects of teacher quality namely mathematics teachers qualification, beliefs about the nature of teaching and learning and classroom teaching practices across 23 countries. Results of descriptive and multivariate analyses show the three facets and their subscales to be distinct but interrelated across countries. At the same time significant differences in profiles are observed cross-nationally. The findings suggest both, global and country-specific effects on teacher quality.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
