Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Robert Alt (1905-1978) published a pictorial atlas on the history of schools and education in two volumes in 1960 and 1965. Before his death, he was able to conceive a third volume, which was to concentrate on the formation of a socialist education system from the October Revolution of 1917 onwards, but was unable to complete it. Posthumously, the manuscript was continued, completed and revised, but it has not been published to date. The article is dedicated to the Bilderatlas as a socialist pictorial space and exemplarily addresses the question of which images constitute a socialist conception of education. On the one hand, the authors draw attention to the Bilderatlas's collection and project, and on the other hand, they show which important topics need to be brought to light for a visual history of education with a view to the post-Soviet space. Abstract (english):
The perception of the transmission of ideas and knowledge through texts is well-known to us. But the image also has a "life of its own" in relation to the text that accompanies and explains it. This has hardly been taken into notice so far. The paper takes up this problem using the example of historical children's and youth literature and focuses here in particular on the genre of books teaching knowledge. In this way, the contexts of origin of the book illustrations will be shown and their references reconstructed. In consequence, the didactic selection of the image content, which was considered relevant for the education of the child in the 18th and 19th century, can be better understood. The way to a solution is interdisciplinary and combines the library perspective in digitizing and providing the image sources, two heterogeneous information science methods for similarity search and the subject-specific expertise in children's book research. We will compare and critically reflect on the suitability and scope of the methods. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Images have been used as didactic material since early modern times; images that served to explain the world with their help have of course been around for longer. The image has been ascribed an illustrative function, often with the hope of giving learners both wider and easier access to the subject matter. The question arises in which - historically different - ways the visual medium presented and thus also constructed an object of learning, how at different times the image and the word were connected, complemented or also contradicted each other, and in which ways images were made accessible to learners, what happened to the images and how they were dealt with. Abstract:
This article presents Interlinking Pictura, a special feature of the digital picture archive Pictura Paedagogica Online. Interlinking Pictura enables the researcher to work with specific pictures stored in Pictura Paedagogica Online in a virtual research environment. Bertuch's Bilderbuch für Kinder, an encyclopaedic publication from the early 19th century, was chosen as a pilot project. The plates and texts of the Bilderbuch are presented with metadata on an open platform based on Wiki technology. The public is invited to supplement the data with additional information. To this end, set tasks can be found, and individual research questions can also be worked on. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
One of the characteristic features of modern life is the omnipresence of images - in public life as well as in the private surroundings. At latest with coining the term "Visual history" at the beginning of the nineteen nineties historical disciplines are dealing with this ever growing pool of pictorial sources. This is also true for educational history - especially when keeping in mind that the use of images in an educational context is common practice since early modern ages. This concerns the presentation practices, the design of didactic visual media and their use in educational practice as well as the illustrated traces of historical educational practice and historical educational knowledge (e.g. photographs of school buildings or educational scenes). There are various digital picture archives to address the research questions of many historical disciplines. These databases, though, differ widely in purpose and design - and of course they cannot serve every scientific demand. According to Gerhard Paul there should be at least four layers of information evaluation when analysing historical images (reality of depiction, genesis, use and impact). Thus, building up a corpus of image sources with sufficient accompanying information can be quite challenging. As major topic the Pre-Conference Workshop will focus on the impact of the discipline on developing and maintaining of a picture archive. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Putting images back in context - after digitizing and indexing images Pictura Paedagogica Online (PPO), the picture archive for educational history, is aiming at offering new means for the research on images as historical sources. One step is the project "Interlinking Pictura", a virtual research environment that presents images in the context of their origins and in connection with other digital sources. As case study Bertuch's "Bilderbuch für Kinder" (1790-1830), a major source of cultural studies and educational history, was selected. Another step is the long overdue relaunch of the picture database itself. After evaluating the picture archive, its contents, its shortcomings but also its powers we decided not just to renovate and mend pieces but to reinvent Pictura from the scratch and with new partners. In this talk we want to present the first results in transforming Pictura Peadagogica Online from a picture archive into an interconnection supporting research environment. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The ongoing digitization of humanities' archival information has contributed to make highly valuable and highly distributed corpora available for research. Connecting this distributed knowledge and enriching it with more data following a specific research question is a big challenge in digital humanities. The project Interlinking Pictura (IP) addresses this challenge by bridging Citizen Science with Open Educational Resources (OER). In order to achieve this objective, citizens are involved in a broad range of participatory levels of research. Besides the involvement of lay researchers (retired teachers, citizen associations etc.), IP adjusts the tasks to open educational resources for distributing and for an easy integration into learning environments. The IP project is built on semantic wiki platform and involves open linked data to enrich the corpus. This offers the possibility to realize the interoperability at multiple levels using standardized vocabularies. In IP the object of interest is the multilingual "Bilderbuch für Kinder" (illustrated book for children) by F. J. Bertuch (1790-1830), which is one of the earliest encyclopedias for children and a milestone in the development of educational resources. An open edition has been created using Semantic MediaWiki as a collaborative platform to facilitate citizens' contribution. The main goal of IP is the creation of an interlinked corpus about Bertuch's illustrated book through connecting the distributed knowledge about its creation, reception, and usage in pedagogical practices. Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the first edition of Rousseau's work "Émile, or: On Education", this contribution is dedicated to the analysis of the book's illustrations. The 18th-century French editions were designed with copperplate engravings by different artists. Of these, the pictorial program of the first edition, published in 1762, had still been authorized by Rousseau; this was no longer true for the posthumously published editions, which changed their pictorial program completely. These two different pictorial programs are analyzed and placed within the context of the history of their printing. Thus, it can be shown in what manner Rousseau's major work has been illustrated.
