Youth Media at School, at Kiosks and in Protest

The planed publication “Jugendmedien in der Schule, am Kiosk und im Protest. Historische und international vergleichende Perspektiven auf Schul- und Jugendkulturen der 1950er und 60er Jahr“ documents findings from the DFG-funded project "PAUSE – Student journals from the 1950s and 1960s in the Federal Republic of Germany" are presented together with outcomes of a workshop held with experts from contemporary history, research on schools and youth culture.

Project Description

The German Research Foundation (DFG) funded the project “PAUSE – student journals from the 1950s and 1960s in the Federal Republic of Germany: Artefacts of school culture and their changing role” which focused on the reconstruction of cultural changes in post-war German grammar schools. Research was based on the comprehensive collection of student journals held at the BBF which encompasses more than 7,000 copies.

For the first time, a large corpus of student journals published in West Germany in the relevant period of interest was investigated from a historical perspective. For example, the project focused on forms and locations of publication, prices per copy and the circulation of published copies. A relevant contribution has thus been made regarding the history of student journals and their dissemination in West Germany. Qualitative case studies were complementarily run to provide deeper insights into the roles student journals played in terms of artefacts created by the students themselves. A micrological perspective on individual schools via their student journals permitted an educational historical investigation of the students‘ perceptions of their schools, the change of opportunities for participation, authoritarian relationships and other aspects of daily school life  .

The publication on the one hand aims to present results of the four-year project , while on the other hand it documents findings from a workshop: In  September 2016, experts from contemporary history, the press, school and youth culture had convened at the BBF to discuss the project outcomes, to contextualize the results and place them in an international frame of reference.
