Abstract (english): The contribution presents an outline of the geographical, political, economical and historical conditions which shaped the initial situation after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the beginning of restructuring the educa- tiona l systems in the Newly Independent States (CIS). The common heritage of Soviet education as well as di-versifying factors are outlined in the field of law, organization structure and contents of education. Another focus is the inf luence of foreign examples on education and training as well as changes in educational needs of the population in the newly independent states. As main factor of diversification among the CIS-countries, the con-tribution of education systems to nation building is outlined. This issue is of great influence towards language, culture and minority politics in the new states and shapes the situation of education in the Russian Federation in a remarkable way. Finally the contribution emphasizes a need of "Western" research on education in the CIS to become open for other languages than Russian and to include the periphery instead of only focussing the "cen-ters" of the former Soviet Union, such as Moscow and St Petersburg.
