Abstract (english): The Japanese school, especially the primary school (shôgakkô), must be seen as a school which stresses not only teaching but in the first line also educating. The children are formed to a community in which educative influence does not only come from the teacher but from the group, its interactions and the community relations themselves. Since there is no repeating of school years for poor performance and children are not separated in any of the subjects - though they are grouped following the principle of bringing together heterogeneous talents, interests and character - group function is becoming very strong. Ceremonies, school events and the fact that the children spend most of the day together underline this educational endeavor. Also the role of the teacher is highlighted.
