Abstract (english): The article presents the concept and the results of a Russian and a German study from 1993/4 about the meaning and purpose of Schooling as seen by the pupils and students. The "philosophy of education" of both studies is examined, understood by the authors as an interaction between teachers and pupils. The article sets the context in which both earlier Soviet and German education evolved in fairly specific but sometimes similar ways. The results for the ma in topics of the questionnaire (what school provides pupils for their future life, what sort of place it is for their well-being, and what they think about their teachers) are presented and compared. Special emphasis is given to t he fact that results are less different as could be expected when comparing the situation of democracy in the two countries: The findings of both studies show the lack of a participatory voice for upper secondary school pupils, wh ile only a small number of teachers answers the interaction requested by the young people.
