Abstract (english): This article, concluding the description of the school systems in Europe, concentrates on the evaluation of quantitative and qualitative findings and their interpretation. It makes a difference between short-term and middle- term predictions and devotes special attention to the specific contents of these two levels. Based upon these pre-considerations the following criteria are analysed: educational sovereignty (focused on the Europeanisation and internationlisation of the educational development); educational goals in the tension between promotion of achievement and equity of educational opportunities; opening of schools (with special regard to the issue of self- government), curriculum development; intercultural socialisation and education; the teacher's profession and his/her education. In the concluding remarks some fundamental questions concerning the middle-term development of schools are discussed.
