Abstract (english): With respect to teaching foreign languages, the English classroom has central position. Besides the aim of teaching the language, another important goal is to foster the intercultural competencies of the students. The conceptionsabout how to teach intercultural competencies in the linguistic literature are quite diverse (Paige, Jorstad, Siaya, Klein, & Colby, 1999), so this study focuses on a model given by Bennett et al. in order to conceptionalise intercultural competencies and their teaching in the English language classroom (Bennett, Bennett, & Allen, 1999). The central question of this research is, how can the quality of the English classroom which is concerned with teaching intercultural competencies, be described? In this study, different paper pencil instruments and video data are used, in order to answer the question, which conditions and perceptions as well as which characteristics of instruction must be realized, in order to promote intercultural learning in English language instruction. In connection with the DESI-Study (Deutsch-Englisch-Schuelerleistungen International) 11 English classes in the 9. and 10. grade of all school forms are videographed.
