Abstract (english): This paper summarizes the rationale, purpose and subject matter of the research project based on a systematic comparison of the school systems in Canada, England, Finland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden. The aim of the project was to carry out an international comparative analysis of educational practice and educational policy in selected reference countries. This process involved documenting the basic educational and policy meas- ures within these countries that had provided explanations for the variance in student performance found in previous comparative studies (TIMSS, OECD surveys) and the PISA survey. These measures, which were selected on the basis of their relevance to educational policy and practice, included assessment and evaluation procedures, governance, support systems and teacher training.
