Abstract (english):
Teachers play a major role in the effectiveness of student learning. Teacher's competence contributes to their classroom practice. We applied a generic model of teacher competence to the specific context of teachers' promotion of self-regulated learning (SRL) in the classroom, and investigated teachers' competence profiles regarding SRL (study 1) and how teachers' competence can moderate the effectiveness of teacher training (study 2). In the first step, in study 1 191 teachers were assessed according to different characteristics that have been found to be important aspects of teacher competence (knowledge, beliefs, and self-efficacy). To investigate how these characteristics co-occur in teachers we determined latent profiles of teacher competence regarding SRL. To this end, and the data were subjected to a latent profile analysis that yielded two levels of competence profile: low and high competence to promote SRL. These competence profiles were positively associated with teachers' self-reported SRL practice in the classroom. Next, to test whether these competence profiles affect teachers' competence development, we conducted a training study. In this study 2, we examined the effects of an 8-h long teacher training about SRL on the development of teachers' competence (knowledge, beliefs, self-efficacy) and on their SRL practice in the classroom with a repeated measures control group design. Forty-five teachers participated in the training, and these teachers and their 543 students evaluated the effectiveness of the training. Training effects were found on the teacher level, but not on the student level. Teachers who participated in the training outperformed the control teachers in their development of self-efficacy to foster SRL, and their perceived SRL practice. Moreover, teachers' competence profiles moderated the training effect, showing that teachers with an initially high competence benefitted more from the training. Applying a generic model of teacher competence to the context of promoting SRL seems beneficial to inspire future research on indicators of teachers' SRL practice. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
A central challenge of instructional research is to measure teaching characteristics appropriately. The assessment of (filmed) instruction by trained raters is regarded as the best way to achieve this, but is associated with high organizational and time costs. In this paper, we present a newly developed instrument for assessing the teaching quality characteristic potential for cognitive activation (PCA). The instrument was developed for mathematics lessons on the topic of quadratic equations. It is based on the joint evaluation of all instructional artifacts of a lesson (lesson plans, student assignments, assessments, etc.) by trained raters and measures the potential for cognitive activation brought into the classroom by the teacher in writing. The validity of the intended interpretation as an indicator for the written PCA of a lesson is examined by an argument-based approach and can be supported by various pieces of evidence: For example, a decision study shows that the instrument can already be reliably assessed by a single rater. Furthermore, it correlates substantially with a measurement of the PCA based on video ratings. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Friendships and their different qualities have been shown to be important for adolescents' socio-emotional development and psychological adjustment. In empirical research on such friendship qualities, the Network of Relationship Inventory-Relationship Quality Version (NRI-RQV) is a widely used questionnaire. Here, we conduct an extensive validation of a German version of the NRI-RQV, investigating its factor structure, reliability, and concurrent validity, in a sample of N= 679 adolescents aged 13-18 years. Applying multigroup confirmatory factor analysis, we further test whether the factor structure of the friendship quality construct holds across groups of males and females. Results showed that a structure with nine correlated first-order factors fit the data well, indicating nine distinct friendship qualities in males and females. Measurement invariance testing suggested the same underlying friendship quality construct, albeit differences in mean scores per gender. As evidence for concurrent validity, closeness and discordant friendship qualities showed expected correlations with empathy and social problems, respectively, but not with aggressive behavior. Overall, results indicate good psychometric properties for the German version of the NRI-RQV as a measure of friendship qualities in both males and females. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Large-scale educational surveys, including PISA, often collect student ratings to assess teaching quality. Because of the sampling design in PISA, student ratings must be aggregated at the school level instead of the classroom level. To what extent does school-level aggregation of student ratings yield reliable and valid measures of teaching quality? We investigate this question for six scales measuring classroom management, emotional support, inquiry-based instruction, teacher-directed instruction, adaptive instruction, and feedback provided by PISA 2015. The sample consisted of 503,146 students from 17,678 schools in 69 countries/regions. Multilevel CFA and SEM were conducted for each scale in each country/region to evaluate school-level reliability (intraclass correlations 1 and 2), factorial validity, and predictive validity. In most countries/regions, school-level reliability was found to be adequate for the classroom management scale, but only low to moderate for the other scales. Examination of factorial and predictive validity indicated that the classroom management, emotional support, adaptive instruction, and teacher-directed instruction scales capture meaningful differences in teaching quality between schools. Meanwhile, the inquiry scale exhibited poor validity in almost all countries/regions. These findings suggest the possibility of using student ratings in PISA to investigate some aspects of school-level teaching quality in most countries/regions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study extended the internal/external reference model to multiple languages including students' language of instruction, first foreign language, and second foreign language. We examined whether social and dimensional comparisons play similar roles in the formation of students' self-concept related to different languages and whether dimensional comparisons result in contrast or assimilation effects. All students had German as the language of instruction and English as the first foreign language. Students were divided into a subsample (N = 487) learning French as a second foreign language and a subsample (N = 481) learning Latin. Invariance tests demonstrated that the achievement-self-concept relations were similar across the subsamples, but interesting group differences became apparent when analyzing the French and Latin subsamples separately. Abstract:
Personality is a relevant predictor for important life outcomes across the entire lifespan. Although previous studies have suggested the comparability of the measurement of the Big Five personality traits across adulthood, the generalizability to childhood is largely unknown. The present study investigated the structure of the Big Five personality traits assessed with the Big Five Inventory-SOEP Version (BFI-S; SOEP = Socio-Economic Panel) across a broad age range spanning 11-84 years. We used two samples of N = 1,090 children (52% female, Mage = 11.87) and N = 18,789 adults (53% female, Mage = 51.09), estimating a multigroup CFA analysis across four age groups (late childhood: 11-14 years; early adulthood: 17-30 years; middle adulthood: 31-60 years; late adulthood: 61-84 years). Our results indicated the comparability of the personality trait metric in terms of general factor structure, loading patterns, and the majority of intercepts across all age groups. Therefore, the findings suggest both a reliable assessment of the Big Five personality traits with the BFI-S even in late childhood and a vastly comparable metric across age groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
International Large-Scale Assessments aim at comparisons of countries with respect to latent constructs such as attitudes, values and beliefs. Measurement invariance (MI) needs to hold in order for such comparisons to be valid. Several statistical approaches to test for MI have been proposed: While Multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MGCFA) is particularly popular, a newer, IRT-based approach was introduced for non-cognitive constructs in PISA 2015, thus raising the question of consistency between these approaches. A total of three approaches (MGCFA for ordinal and continuous data, multi-group IRT) were applied to simulated data containing different types and extents of MI violations, and to the empirical non-cognitive PISA 2015 data. Analyses are based on indices of the magnitude (i.e., parameter-specific modification indices resulting from MGCFA and group-specific item fit statistics resulting from the IRT approach) and direction of local misfit (i.e., standardized parameter change and mean deviation, respectively). Results indicate that all measures were sensitive to (some) MI violations and more consistent in identifying group differences in item difficulty parameters.

Abstract (english):
This study examines the latent structure of the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory - II (ROCI-II) in several samples of secondary school students. Findings from earlier studies conducted in adult populations suggested that the instrument has a four- or five-factor structure; however, the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in this study yielded a three-factor (integrating, dominating, avoiding) solution, with most of the items associated with a fourth factor (Obliging) failing to load as predicted. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) replicated the three-factor solution satisfactorily. A multiple-group CFA indicated that the ROCI-II showed invariant measurement properties in male and female students and corroborated the concurrent validity of the three-factor solution. The integrating factor was related positively to a measure of perspective taking but negatively to a measure of reluctance to participate. The avoiding factor was associated with a measure of reluctance to participate. We discuss the implications of the results for understanding the latent structure of the ROCI-II in adolescents. Abstract (english):
Teaching practices are pivotal for student learning. Due to pedagogical traditions and national cultures, the structure of teaching practices may differ across countries. This study investigates the structure of teaching practices across 12 countries grouped into four major linguistic/cultural clusters. First, factor analysis is applied to investigate if the theoretical distinction between teacher-directed and student-centred practices is generalizable across countries. Then, network analysis is used to explore how individual classroom assessment practices relate to either teacher-directed or student-centred practices. Main findings include that: (1) teacher-directed and student-centred practices are two distinct factors across countries; (2) the overall structure and connectivity of teaching practices differs across countries, with smaller differences within linguistic/cultural clusters; and (3) assessment practices with the aim to structure and guide learning strongly relate to teacher-directed practices, whereas assessment practices with the aim to individualize instruction more relate to student-centred practices. We discuss the global patterning and implications.

Abstract:
The present study investigated whether the varying referents (i.e., teacher or student referent) of student ratings of established classroom management measures differ in their associations with compositional classroom characteristics and students' math achievement. Re-analysis of a large-scale dataset (PISA 2003) showed that classrooms with a higher proportion of male students, as well as those with lower math performance, exhibited lower scores on classroom management factors referring more to students than the teacher. These were in turn related to lower pre-adjusted math achievement of students. There were no associations with a measure referring to the teacher. Our results indicate that varying referents tap into different aspects of the classroom management process. (DIPF/Orig.)
