Abstract: Social research, qualitative and quantitative, has long been the preferred means of selfobservation in industrial societies. The social science data generated in the process are therefore rewarding sources for many fields of contemporary history. A large-scale integration of both quantitative and qualitative social science data into the contemporary historian's practice will aid a fuller reconstruction of the agency of ordinary people and the relations between the social sciences, society, and politics of the past. This article addresses the challenges facing historians re-using social science data. It gives examples of relevant archives and research projects, discussing the historian's method and practice and the ethical, legal, archival and metadata problems awaiting resolution. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: This report contains an analysis of the effective use of learner-generated data with a specific focus on teacher training. The use of learner-generated data in research is coined Learning Analytics. So far very little is published about learner-generated data in the context of teacher training. The following report aims to introduce teacher trainers, policymakers and practitioners to learning analytics. It defines learning analytics and describes the core dimensions of it, such as stakeholders, objectives, data, technologies, ethics & privacy, and required competencies to exploit the benefits of learning analytics. After a comprehensive introduction to learning analytics, the report shows practical examples of learning analytics applications. It describes how learner-generated data can be identified, captured, and visualised on learner analytics dashboards. It also provides examples of public-funded and commercial applications of learning that take advantage of learning analytics in schools these days. Finally, the report outlines a potential teacher training program inspired by university master programs on learning analytics. It also suggests two training scenarios (a low-tech and a high-tech scenario) that could be used for the training of teachers on learner-generated data. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): This paper describes open learning and teaching materials, so-called open educational resources (OER), as visualizing, economic and normative objects, and classifies these into a plenum with interwoven practices and arrangements of material (Schatzki). The plenum determines how the actors, their socio-material practices, and the associated political and technical frameworks each generate different interpretations of OER for the actors. The discussion is based on a case study of a video platform providing academic content. The empirical example, studied via document analysis and content analysis, of the TIB AV portal as an educational infrastructure offering videos of scientific conferences and teaching as an online service shows how the normative requirements to open educational resources are produced by the infrastructure. The paper focuses on the argument that the normative dimension of OER be part of material arrangements. The normative OER model is implemented in the infrastructure, while the social norms of openness are provided by the service. OER in terms of normative objects embodying the norm of openness are produced performatively through repositories. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: To assist higher education institutions in meeting the challenge of limited student engagement in the implementation of Learning Analytics services, the Questionnaire for Student Expectations of Learning Analytics (SELAQ) was developed. This instrument contains 12 items, which are explained by a purported two‐factor structure of "Ethical and Privacy Expectations" and "Service Feature Expectations." As it stands, however, the SELAQ has only been validated with students from UK university, which is problematic on account of the interest in Learning Analytics extending beyond this context. Thus, the aim of the current work was to assess whether the translated SELAQ can be validated in three contexts (an Estonian, a Spanish, and a Dutch University). The findings show that the model provided acceptable fits in both the Spanish and Dutch samples, but was not supported in the Estonian student sample. In addition, an assessment of local fit is undertaken for each sample, which provides important points that need to be considered in future work. Finally, a general comparison of expectations across contexts is undertaken, which are discussed in relation to the General Data Protection Regulation (2018). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Data science in education has been coined as 'Learning Analytics', an umbrella term for research questions from overlapping research domains such as psychology, educational science, computer and data science. Despite the great enthusiasm currently surrounding LA, there are substantial questions for research and organisational development that have brought the implementation of LA to a hold, and in some prominent cases have even reversed it due to concerns by governments, stakeholders and civil rights groups about privacy and ethics applied to the handling of personal data. The new General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) adds another layer of the complexity to the application of LA in Europe. This all raises a climate that demands a different approach to Learning Analytics in Europe and especially in Germany. Within this article, we shortly describe what Learning Analytics is, highlight the concerns that come with the application of LA, and finally draw a new approach towards LA that we call: Trusted Learning Analytics. Titel: Integrating the emic (indigenous) with the etic (universal) A case of squaring the circle or for adopting a culture inclusive action theory perspective

Abstract: The dualism of emic and etic plays a crucial role in the emergence of three culturally informed approaches of psychology: cross-cultural psychology (CCP), cultural psychology (CP) and indigenous psychologies (IPs), a distinction largely accepted nowadays. Similarities and/or differences between these positions are usually discussed either on the level of phenomena (data) or theory. In this paper, however, the discussion takes place on a meta-theoretical or epistemological level, which is also emerging elsewhere. In following several earlier papers of the author, first, four perspectives are distinguished that underlie present day psychology. Second, these are used as a framework for linking them to the three "camps". This analysis will show that these perspectives are characterized by different underlying worldviews, interests as well as methodical preferences. Third, it is claimed that this level of discussion is quite fruitful for the ongoing discourse on the three camps, but also helps one to understand, why the duality between emic and etic approaches is - implicitly or explicitly - at the core of these discussions, because their relevance turns out to differ in the three camps. In that sense, the emic/etic duality is used here as a "litmus test" to exemplify these deeper differences between the camps, thereby highlighting them. Fourth, in order to overcome not only the dilemma between the unique and general in psychology, but also to clarify the relation between the individual and culture it is proposed that psychology should take human action as its unit of analysis, thereby connecting historically to the early beginnings of psychology at the end of the 19th century. It will be argued that a culture inclusive action theory may overcome this tension and may help to integrate western and other indigenous psychologies, and hence it could be advantageous to integrate CP and IPs as well. This is possible because the proposed theory hopefully provides a universal framework for psychological concepts, yet allows for their culture specific expression. (DIPF/Orig.)
