Abstract:
Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience impairing levels of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity, while individuals without ADHD experience these symptoms to a lesser extent. Yet, ADHD self-report scales so far hardly captured continuous distributions across the general population. In addition, they focused on weaknesses and ignored strengths. To address these shortcomings, we present here the Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD and Normal-Behavior Scale Self-Report (SWAN-DE-SB). The normal distribution of the data collected and the scale's internal consistency, and factorial and convergent validity were assessed using data from a general population sample. Its clinical utility was evaluated by comparing scores from a clinical sample and a sample of individuals without ADHD and by calculating optimal cut-off values for specificity and sensitivity. The SWAN-DE-SB demonstrated normal distribution of the data collected, high internal consistency, and factorial and convergent validity. It reliably discriminated individuals with and without ADHD, with high specificity and sensitivity. It should therefore be considered a psychometrically convincing measure to assess strengths and weaknesses of ADHD symptoms and normal behavior in clinical and general population samples. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In the present article it is shown that parental cultural capital is a crucial factor in accessing arts education. It is argued that the intergenerational transmission of cultural capital is a mechanism which perpetuates unequal opportunities of participating in arts education from one generation to the other. The contribution builds upon Pierre Bourdieus theory and deduces a differentiated operationalization of cultural capital. Arts education is operationalized in its highbrow and sociocultural facets, that include formal, non-formal and informal settings in all cultural branches. The effects of parental cultural capital on arts activities of the adolescents are investigated analyzing data from the German National Educational Panel Study with structural equation models. It can be shown that receptive highbrow cultural activities are most strongly associated with parental cultural capital, followed by courses outside of school, participation in culture clubs and visiting a school with an artistic profile, while no social disparities can be found for cultural activities in youth centers. The results emphasize the need for further research to point out possibilities to foster equal opportunities in participating in arts education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Training to run is not straightforward since without proper personalised supervision and planning, people will not improve their performance and will increase the risk of injuries. This study aims to identify the different factors that influence running training programmes, examining the benefits, challenges or limitations of personalised plans. Moreover, this study explores how multimodal, immersive and artificial intelligence technologies can support personalised training. We conducted an exploratory sequential mixed research consisting of interviews with 11 running coaches from different countries and a survey of 12 running coaches. Based on the interviews and survey analysis, we identified and extracted relevant factors of the training process. We identified four relevant aspects for running training: physical, technical, mental and body awareness. Using these aspects as a reference, we derived a framework using a bottom-up approach. This framework proposes multimodal, immersive and artificial intelligence technologies to facilitate personalised running training. It also allows coaches to personally guide their athletes on each aspect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Various studies empirically proved the value of highly informative feedback for enhancing learner success. However, digital educational technology has yet to catch up as automated feedback is often provided shallowly. This paper presents a case study on implementing a pipeline that provides German-speaking university students enrolled in an introductory-level educational psychology lecture with content-specific feedback for a lecture assignment. In the assignment, students have to discuss the usefulness and educational grounding (i.e., connection to working memory, metacognition or motivation) of ten learning tips presented in a video within essays. Through our system, students received feedback on the correctness of their solutions and content areas they needed to improve. For this purpose, we implemented a natural language processing pipeline with two steps: (1) segmenting the essays and (2) predicting codes from the resulting segments used to generate feedback texts. As training data for the model in each processing step, we used 689 manually labelled essays submitted by the previous student cohort. We then evaluated approaches based on GBERT, T5, and bag-of-words baselines for scoring them. Both pipeline steps, especially the transformer-based models, demonstrated high performance. In the final step, we evaluated the feedback using a randomised controlled trial. The control group received feedback as usual (essential feedback), while the treatment group received highly informative feedback based on the natural language processing pipeline. We then used a six items long survey to test the perception of feedback. We conducted an ordinary least squares analysis to model these items as dependent variables, which showed that highly informative feedback had positive effects on helpfulness and reflection. Abstract:
Individuals with dyslexia have been shown to have an increased risk for developing internalizing problems. Various studies have revealed the powerful role that culture plays in determining the type of anxiety and coping strategies adopted by various groups of individuals. However, compared to the vast number of studies conducted in individualistic cultures, knowledge on collectivistic cultures with respect to this issue is still limited. This study examined anxiety and coping strategies of children with and without dyslexia in Ethiopia, where the majority of its cultural dimensions could be regarded as collectivistic. A total of 126 children with (n = 63) and without (n = 63) dyslexia, aged 8-11 (41 boys and 22 girls, in each group; and age: M = 9.43 years; SD = 1.14 and M = 9.46; SD =1.11), participated. Dyslexia was assessed using an Amharic dyslexia assessment battery, while anxiety level and coping strategy were respectively measured using the Spence Children's Anxiety Scales (SCAS) and the Children's Coping Questionnaire (CCQ), both translated into Amharic. Results indicated that dyslexia was associated with higher levels of anxiety (especially generalized anxiety) and lower levels of support-seeking coping strategies. We discuss these results in the light of the cultural and institutional context in Ethiopia. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Current lifelong learning platforms offer users a query option to select a wide variety of courses. However, finding a suitable course among the seemingly endless catalogs of options presented by the platforms is not straightforward. We argue that digital counseling can enhance this process. In this paper, we present a set of three formative studies where we explored the main aspects that can provide the counseling needed. The methods comprise an analysis of user profile characteristics and learning analytics indicators (e.g., learning progress/self-regulation) by means of an expert workshop, evaluating the feasibility of current technologies (e.g., natural language processing) for automatically assessing users' competencies, and a survey on the use of Chatbots as the interaction interface between the users and the lifelong learning portals. The analysis resulted in the extraction of basic requirements for digital counseling. We conclude the paper by presenting a system design derived from these studies. (DIPF/Orig.)
