Abstract:
This chapter emphasizes the importance of language for the integration of immigrants. First, we summarize findings on the crucial role of language skills for educational success, occupational opportunities, and social inclusion. As the openness of the host society is also a central factor for integration, we next describe how social categorization can be an important source for the development of prejudice, hostility, and extremism. In this context, we highlight the significant role of language as a social category that has the potential to impact positively the openness of host society members towards immigrants. Finally, we summarize two studies demonstrating the importance of language as an intergroup category. Study 1 found evidence that language skills play an important role in secondary school students' openness towards refugee peers, and Study 2 provided some initial indication that language skills are more relevant than cultural similarity for the openness of host society members towards international students at higher education institutions. In sum, this chapter establishes the crucial role of host society language skills from different perspectives and demonstrates that language has a great potential for promoting the successful integration of immigrants. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
There has been much discussion of the extent to which the secondary school type attended influences learning and educational trajectories in Germany. However, little is yet known about the effects of school type on later labor market outcomes. This article aims to fill this gap by taking a longitudinal perspective on the effects of attending different secondary school types (following N = 5292 persons from the beginning of grade 7) on later occupational characteristics (job prestige, income, and unemployment at age 31 years). At first glance, the results point to differences between school types, but these effects are to a large extent explained by school/vocational qualifications and by individual and social differences. When it comes to predicting income and unemployment, at least, vocational qualifications, in particular, seem to be decisive. The effect of attending a vocational-track Hauptschule relative to the other school types remains associated with lower occupational status, however, even with additional control for individual and social background. The findings suggest that different educational pathways in the form of different secondary school types are indeed to some extent differently rewarded on the labor market: not in terms of income and unemployment, but in terms of occupational status.

Abstract:
In this study, we analyzed how secondary school tracking relates to students' self-beliefs (i.e., their academic self-concepts in different domains and their beliefs regarding their labor market chances) and school disengagement during a time period that has received little attention in educational psychological research on tracking: when students are at the end of schooling and on the verge of entering the labor market. In doing so, we disentangled 2 distinguishing features of tracking: tracks as social contexts(operationalized via track level and the mean achievement of students' schoolmates) and tracks as pathways to different future opportunities (operationalized via educational certificates). Using questionnaire, achievement, and administrative school data from 2,155 students from 29 low-track schools, 23 intermediate-track schools, and 35 comprehensive schools in Berlin, Germany, we found educational certificates to be the most important factor shaping students' self-beliefs and school disengagement. Irrespective of their individual achievement, their schoolmates' achievement, and their track level, students who received the intermediate school-leaving certificate had higher academic self-concepts, believed that their certificate would give them better chances of success in the labor market, and were less disengaged from school than students who received the low school-leaving certificate. In contrast, students' track level did not serve as a predictor for the outcomes considered. The achievement of students' schoolmates (i.e., the big-fish-little-pond effect) was only relevant for students' academic self-concepts and not for students' self-beliefs regarding labor market entry or their school disengagement. Abstract:
