(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english): Mathematical formulae are information objects that can be entered in a computer, visualized, and evaluated. Thus, by the majority of (mostly occasional) users it is also expected that they are transferable through the simple copy-paste procedure. This transfer is particularly interesting when users are involved in tasks that span different mathematical activities or domains. For example, when performing computations and writing a report about them, or when performing algebraic computations from geometric constructions. Essentially, using copy-paste also allows users to use a particular mathematical software for the tasks that it does best.
To uncover the possible difficulties within this process, we approached students who are beginning to learn the use of mathematical tools. Through analysing their home-work where they report on the usage of various tools we observed their use of the copy-paste transfer procedure, both from their reports and from the dialogue they had with the teachers. Their attempts show a multitude of issues which we try to explain. It appears that the copy-paste procedure is often useless, especially for inexperienced users. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The foundation of school success is laid early in children's lives. Consequently, assessments of academic precursors may help to identify children in need of additional support. Such early assessments could also be interesting from an international perspective when educational systems are compared. This analysis is used to inform on the comparability of Slovenian and German versions of the English on-school-entry assessment tool "Performance Indicators in Primary School" (PIPS; Tymms and Albone 2002). PIPS was also used to predict later academic achievement in the two national samples. The German sample consisted of 468 children with a mean age of about 6;6 years at school entry (48.7 % girls). In Slovenia, 328 children (49 % girls) were assessed (mean age of about 6;3 years at school entry). Multi-group confirmatory factor analyses for PIPS did not support weak measurement invariance. However, results indicated that the number of factors as well as the pattern of loadings seems to be comparable. Further research is needed to examine in which respects PIPS might work as a tool for international comparisons. Structural equation modelling indicated that PIPS can be used as a predictor of academic achievement and that overall academic achievement could be predicted best by early numeracy. PIPS measures of literacy and numeracy skills were specific and significant predictors of children's later language and math achievement in grade 1. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: In this chapter, school climate variables are employed in order to explore school principals' influence on student achievement through the Pashiardis-Brauckmann Holistic Leadership Framework. The aim is to identify the mechanisms through which leadership influences student learning. For the purposes of the LISA project, a number of school climate variables were used as mediating variables between the principal's leadership styles and student achievement. All analyses pointed towards a model comprising seven such mediating factors. The seven school climate factors were labeled as follows: professional development opportunities, evaluation and feedback, teacher commitment, parental involvement, teaching and learning practices, student-teacher interactions, and student expectations. Then, an analysis was performed that examined the degree to which school leadership styles reliably predicted school climate variables. The findings suggest that the instructional, the structuring, and the entrepreneurial leadership styles are utilized by school principals in order to enhance student achievement.

Abstract (english): In recent years, initiatives and measures targeting the assurance and development of individual school quality have led to changes in the conditions of school leadership actions in the context of the education systems. From the perspective of educational policy, these "new" contextual conditions are often conceived in terms of enabling an enforced concern for effective (i. e. outcome-oriented) concepts of action. As far as school leaders are concerned, this mainly refers to using
assigned enhanced realms of action and taking on responsibility for the development of their schools, based on quality-oriented reference norms.
Against this background, findings from an explorative, international comparative school leadership study, "Leadership Improvement for Student Achievement" (LISA), are reported, investigating into the relationship between different degrees of "school autonomy" and applied leadership styles, delivering insights into possible points of breakage between intended enablement and actual implementation of effective leadership actions.

Abstract (english): The overall purpose of the European Union-funded Leadership Improvement for Student Achievement (LISA) project was to explore how leadership styles, as conceptualized in the developed dynamic holistic leadership framework, directly or indirectly affect student achievement at the lower secondary level of education in seven European countries. This paper seeks to address this issue. In its methodological design the study is a mixture of research methods and collaborative action research shared by acting school leaders and researchers. A series of statistical analyses was carried out in order to gather evidence whether the data from the LISA project supported the initially developed holistic leadership theoretical framework. Consequently, first some descriptive statistics are introduced in order to acquaint the reader with the kind of data the survey used from the schoolteacher questionnaires. Further, some explanations are laid out with regard to the methodologies employed in order to analyze the data, such as the treatment of missing data and exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis structural equation models (SEM); then, a description of the main findings is offered through the analyses, which were conducted in order to predict school performance level from the relevant leadership style, followed by between-countries comparisons and analyses. Finally, an in-depth discussion and interpretations of the main findings - both integrative and concludive in nature - are offered. The quantitative analyses stemming from confirmatory factor analysis and SEM identified five robust underlying dimensions of practised leadership styles across the seven participating European countries. Furthermore, the findings stemming from the logistic regression analyses pointed out clearly the complementary inter-relationships of the main research questions of the study and analytical strands, especially with regard to the impact of certain intermediate variables on student achievement. The expected results of this approach are predominantly assumed/seen as an enrichment in the grounding of hypothetical and theoretical ideas as well as professional development for both school principals and researchers. Such an equal contribution of school leaders and school leaders' organizations and researchers could probably provide a model for future professional development programs for both groups of professionals. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): This contribution to the Feasibility Study of a large scale assessment in the field of vocational education asks whether there is a common basis for a possible future large scale assessment in vocational education and training in the field of social and health care. The comparison is carried out in 7 European countries (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland). Unlike basic competences referring to the concept of literacy for successful participation in society (e.g., PISA, ALL, PIAAC), domain-specific competences are focused on knowledge, skills and abilities in specific vocational areas in economies based on the division of labour. Contexts for VET differmarkedly and VET operates in multiple ways even in the same sector or country. This is particularly the case in the field of social and health care. The focus of the Feasibility Study in the field of social and health care is therefore to identify comparable occupational profiles and learning outcomes at the end of respective VET programmes. The study uses a qualitative approach, focussing on the results of a series of national and international expert workshops, which is supported by quantitative, non-parametric data. Results suggest that in the field of social health care, selected vocational programmes can be identified across countries with occupational profiles and learning outcomes that are sufficiently comparable. It concludes that a large scale assessment can be recommended in the field of social and health care. The results of the study provide a basis for the construction of a framework and the definition of measurement dimensions in the field of social and health care for subsequent test development in a possible future VET-LSA.
