Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This study examines educational pathways from secondary school on for graduates of tertiary institutions with and without taking up doctoral studies. Based on the longitudinal survey BIJU we investigate the predictive significance of characteristics of educational pathways on taking up a doctorate. We focus on differences in terms of duration of studies, vocational education, life and studies abroad and the job as a student assistant. Additionally, it is analyzed whether these characteristics are influential on the transition to doctoral studies beyond control of educational performance and social background. The findings suggest that there are significant differences in the characteristics between graduates of tertiary institutions with and without entering doctoral studies. In the multivariate analyses, beyond control of performance and social background, a negative effect of duration of studies and a positive effect of a stay abroad on taking up doctoral studies remain significant. Abstract (english):
Recently, the term mingle was introduced for persons with an intimate relationship who do not define themselves as romantic partners. This study examines differences between single, mingle and partnered adults in terms of life satisfaction and loneliness. Furthermore, need fulfillment is investigated as a mediator concerning the link between relationship status with life satisfaction and emotional loneliness. Lastly, a longitudinal analysis examined whether increases in commitment lead to higher well-being. A total of 764 participants completed an online questionnaire. Mingles fell in between singles and partnered adults regarding emotional loneliness and life satisfaction. With regard to female participants, relatedness and competence need fulfillment fully mediated the link between relationship status and life satisfaction whereas the association between relationship status and emotional loneliness was specifically mediated by the relatedness and autonomy component. Finally, shifting into more committed forms of relationship increased well-being regarding the longitudinal analysis. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Interoperability frameworks provide specifications for different aspects of interoperability, for communicating and sharing information. Ten prominent industry-neutral interoperability frameworks are analyzed in this paper, distinguishing between operational interoperability frameworks and conceptual interoperability frameworks. To support this analysis, 16 criteria were defined, which represent the basis of a comparison framework. The operational interoperability frameworks analyzed have similarities and differences, and complement each other in some aspects (e.g. messaging service). The differences refer to the manner they handle (or not) different interoperability details relevant for performing e-business, e.g. only ebXML provides guidelines for negotiation and setting-up a collaboration agreement prior to conducting e-business. The five conceptual interoperability frameworks were analyzed based on specific structural elements, as they tackle differently the notion of interoperability, i.e. targeting types of integration, interoperability barriers, levels of interoperability. Despite the advances of interoperability frameworks, full interoperability is not yet achieved. The analysis performed allowed to conclude that although interoperability frameworks represent a good direction towards seamless interoperability in a networked environment, a big challenge is the harmonization of different aspects of the interoperability frameworks towards attaining full interoperability in complex cross-sectorial e-business scenarios, which can be addressed by joint actions of the scientific community and practitioners. Finally, this analysis yields a set of directions for future research work. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
One key factor for the successful outcome of a Learning Analytics (LA) infrastructure is the ability to decide which software architecture concept is necessary. Big Data can be used to face the challenges LA holds. Additional challenges on privacy rights are introduced to the Europeans by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Beyond that, the challenge of how to gain the trust of the users remains. We found diverse architectural concepts in the domain of LA. Selecting an appropriate solution is not straightforward. Therefore, we conducted a structured literature review to assess the state-of-the-art and provide an overview of Big Data architectures used in LA. Based on the examination of the results, we identify common architectural components and technologies and present them in the form of a mind map. Linking the findings, we are proposing an initial approach towards a Trusted and Interoperable Learning Analytics Infrastructure (TIILA). (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study investigated to what extent multimodal data can be used to detect mistakes during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training. We complemented the Laerdal QCPR ResusciAnne manikin with the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, a multi-sensor system consisting of a Microsoft Kinect for tracking body position and a Myo armband for collecting electromyogram information. We collected multimodal data from 11 medical students, each of them performing two sessions of two-minute chest compressions (CCs). We gathered in total 5254 CCs that were all labelled according to five performance indicators, corresponding to common CPR training mistakes. Three out of five indicators, CC rate, CC depth and CC release, were assessed automatically by the ReusciAnne manikin. The remaining two, related to arms and body position, were annotated manually by the research team. We trained five neural networks for classifying each of the five indicators. The results of the experiment show that multimodal data can provide accurate mistake detection as compared to the ResusciAnne manikin baseline. We also show that the Multimodal Tutor for CPR can detect additional CPR training mistakes such as the correct use of arms and body weight. Thus far, these mistakes were identified only by human instructors. Finally, to investigate user feedback in the future implementations of the Multimodal Tutor for CPR, we conducted a questionnaire to collect valuable feedback aspects of CPR training. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The study examines correlations between pedagogical teachers' beliefs, adaptive teaching in English lessons, and students' learning outcomes (achievement and well-being). The research question asks whether the latter connection is mediated by adaptive teaching. The study is based on the 'Drei-Länder-Studie' by Helmut Fend. The results show that pedagogical beliefs are related to adaptivity. The connection between these beliefs and the well-being of the students in English lessons is mediated by adaptivity but for the students' English achievement no mediation by adaptivity occurs. Abstract:
We analyze the subtle mechanisms at work in the interaction between families and schools that underlie social inequalities at the transition point from elementary school into secondary-school tracks in Berlin, Germany. We do so by combining quantitative data from a large-scale survey and assessment study (N = 3,935 students and their parents) with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with parents (N = 25) collected during the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 school years. The quantitative analyses show that students from high-socioeconomic status (SES) families were more likely to enter the academic track than were students from low-SES families, even if they performed equally well on a standardized achievement test, had the same grades in school, and received the same track recommendation from their teachers. The qualitative analyses illustrate the many ways in which parents intervene during the transition process, with high-SES parents having particularly effective ways of getting what they want for their children. Abstract:
The association between academic self-concept and achievement is assumed to be reciprocal. Typically, the association is analyzed by variants of the classical cross-lagged panel model. Results with more recently developed methodological approaches, for example, the random intercept cross-lagged panel model, its continuous-time implementation, and the latent change score model, are not available so far. The present study aimed to test the association between reading self-concept and reading achievement with different models to evaluate whether positive cross-lagged effects can be demonstrated with the alternative models. Drawing on a sample of 2,014 elementary students from Grade 1 to Grade 4, results of alternative models yielded noticeable differences. Support for reciprocal effects between reading self-concept and reading achievement was found using the classical and the full-forward cross-lagged panel models. No such effects were found in the other models. Thus, the reciprocal effect model can be called into question for elementary schoolchildren. The results are discussed with regard to the theoretical assumptions and appropriate methodological approaches. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Letter knowledge is considered an important cognitive foundation for learning to read. The underlying mechanisms of the association between letter knowledge and reading skills are, however, not fully understood. Acquiring letter knowledge depends on the ability to learn and retrieve sound-symbol pairings. In the current study, this process was explored by setting preschool children's (N = 242, mean age = 5.57 years) performance in the acquisition and retrieval of a paired associate learning (PAL) task in relation to their letter knowledge as well as to their performance in tasks assessing precursors of reading skills (i.e., phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, phonological short-term memory, backward recall, and response inhibition). Multiple regression analyses revealed that performance in the acquisition of the PAL task was significantly associated with phonological awareness and backward recall, whereas performance in the retrieval of the PAL task was significantly associated with rapid automatized nam- ing, phonological awareness, and backward recall. Moreover, PAL proved to be mediating the relation between reading precursors and letter knowledge. Together, these findings indicate that the acquisition of letter knowledge may depend on a visual-verbal associative learning mechanism and that different factors contribute to the acquisition and retrieval of such visual-verbal associations. Abstract (english):
A validity approach is proposed that uses processing times to collect validity evidence for the construct interpretation of test scores. The rationale of the approach is based on current research of processing times and on classical validity approaches, providing validity evidence based on relationships with other variables. Within the new approach, convergent validity evidence is obtained if a component skill, that is expected to underlie the task solution process in the target construct, positively moderates the relationship between effective speed and effective ability in the corresponding target construct. Discriminant validity evidence is provided if a component skill, that is not expected to underlie the task solution process in the target construct, does indeed not moderate the speed-ability relation in this target construct. Using data from a study that follows up the German PIAAC sample, this approach was applied to reading competence, assessed with PIAAC literacy items, and to quantitative reasoning, assessed with Number Series. As expected from theory, the effect of speed on ability in the target construct was only moderated by the respective underlying component skill, that is, word meaning activation skill as an underlying component skill of reading competence, and perceptual speed as an underlying component skill of reasoning. Accordingly, no positive interactions were found for the component skill that should not underlie the task solution process, that is, word meaning activation for reasoning and perceptual speed for reading. Furthermore, the study shows the suitability of the proposed validation approach. The use of time information in association with task results brings construct validation closer to the actual response process than widely used correlations of test scores. (DIPF/Orig.)
