Abstract (english):
In this article, we provide a comparative analysis of public education in Germany and the US, focusing on historical and contemporary challenges to education, Bildung, and citizenry in the modern nation state. In particular, we examine relations among nation building processes and education, transnational discourses, mutual influences, and relations regarding public education over time, and identity building and citizenship within and between federal, nation state and international levels. Comparative methods are utilized to examine policy documents as well as the literature, looking for similarities and differences among key concepts and discourses. The article concludes by pointing out that a number of contemporary developments bringing public education to a crossroads today are not entirely new and that foundations of education theory are still relevant. At the same time, we suggest new cross-national dialogues regarding the challenges bringing public education to the crossroads today. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Friendships and their different qualities have been shown to be important for adolescents' socio-emotional development and psychological adjustment. In empirical research on such friendship qualities, the Network of Relationship Inventory-Relationship Quality Version (NRI-RQV) is a widely used questionnaire. Here, we conduct an extensive validation of a German version of the NRI-RQV, investigating its factor structure, reliability, and concurrent validity, in a sample of N= 679 adolescents aged 13-18 years. Applying multigroup confirmatory factor analysis, we further test whether the factor structure of the friendship quality construct holds across groups of males and females. Results showed that a structure with nine correlated first-order factors fit the data well, indicating nine distinct friendship qualities in males and females. Measurement invariance testing suggested the same underlying friendship quality construct, albeit differences in mean scores per gender. As evidence for concurrent validity, closeness and discordant friendship qualities showed expected correlations with empathy and social problems, respectively, but not with aggressive behavior. Overall, results indicate good psychometric properties for the German version of the NRI-RQV as a measure of friendship qualities in both males and females. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Large-scale educational surveys, including PISA, often collect student ratings to assess teaching quality. Because of the sampling design in PISA, student ratings must be aggregated at the school level instead of the classroom level. To what extent does school-level aggregation of student ratings yield reliable and valid measures of teaching quality? We investigate this question for six scales measuring classroom management, emotional support, inquiry-based instruction, teacher-directed instruction, adaptive instruction, and feedback provided by PISA 2015. The sample consisted of 503,146 students from 17,678 schools in 69 countries/regions. Multilevel CFA and SEM were conducted for each scale in each country/region to evaluate school-level reliability (intraclass correlations 1 and 2), factorial validity, and predictive validity. In most countries/regions, school-level reliability was found to be adequate for the classroom management scale, but only low to moderate for the other scales. Examination of factorial and predictive validity indicated that the classroom management, emotional support, adaptive instruction, and teacher-directed instruction scales capture meaningful differences in teaching quality between schools. Meanwhile, the inquiry scale exhibited poor validity in almost all countries/regions. These findings suggest the possibility of using student ratings in PISA to investigate some aspects of school-level teaching quality in most countries/regions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Transitions in the educational system are highly important for the emergence of social inequality. Research points at a decrease in social background effects from the transition to secondary education to the transition to tertiary studies as well as to a decrease in the relevance of primary effects (performance-based social background effects) across the two transitions. Based on the longitudinal study BIJU, this study examines the development of the effect of educational background over post-school educational pathways focusing on the transition to tertiary as well as to doctoral studies and investigates which proportion of the social background effect can be traced back to primary effects. By conducting an effect decomposition, the proportion of the social background effect traceable to performance differences is calculated. To analyse the cumulative effect of social background in higher education, the analysis for the transition to doctoral studies was performed using the whole sample of persons with a higher education entrance qualification next to only using the selective sample of graduates with a tertiary degree. The results indicate that an effect of educational background exists at both transition points. This effect is decreasing across the two transitions, however, the inequality is cumulative overall. The relevance of performance differences increases in a relative perspective, however, decreases in an absolute perspective. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
There has been much discussion of the extent to which the secondary school type attended influences learning and educational trajectories in Germany. However, little is yet known about the effects of school type on later labor market outcomes. This article aims to fill this gap by taking a longitudinal perspective on the effects of attending different secondary school types (following N = 5292 persons from the beginning of grade 7) on later occupational characteristics (job prestige, income, and unemployment at age 31 years). At first glance, the results point to differences between school types, but these effects are to a large extent explained by school/vocational qualifications and by individual and social differences. When it comes to predicting income and unemployment, at least, vocational qualifications, in particular, seem to be decisive. The effect of attending a vocational-track Hauptschule relative to the other school types remains associated with lower occupational status, however, even with additional control for individual and social background. The findings suggest that different educational pathways in the form of different secondary school types are indeed to some extent differently rewarded on the labor market: not in terms of income and unemployment, but in terms of occupational status.

Abstract (english):
This study investigated the role of refugee status and language skills for adolescents' inclusion or exclusion decisions in hypothetical intergroup scenarios. 100 German adolescents (Mage = 13.65 years, SD = 1.93) were presented three scenarios in which groups of adolescents are planning leisure time activities, and peers from their own country (Germany) versus another country (Syrian refugees) with either good or bad German skills want to join them. Whereas adolescents' inclusion decisions did not differ between the German protagonist and the Syrian one with good German skills, the Syrian protagonist with bad German skills was less likely to be included than either of the other two. These findings have implications for understanding the role of language in adolescents' inclusion decisions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The present study investigates whether teacher perceptions of students' cognitive skills, their learning motivation, and their classroom behavior differ according to students' socioeconomic status, immigrant background, and gender. Data from N = 4746 German fourth graders and data from their parents and teachers were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Controlling for student achievement as measured in a standardized achievement test and student motivation as measured by student and parent reports, we found that teachers overestimated the cognitive skills of high-SES students and girls in comparison to those of low-SES students and boys. Similarly, teachers perceived high-SES students, students who are not from an immigrant background, and girls as having a higher learning motivation and as having more cognitive skills. Finally, we found that teachers' perceptions of students' learning motivation and classroom behavior mediated the relationship between student characteristics and cognitive skills as perceived by the teacher. Abstract:
Personality is a relevant predictor for important life outcomes across the entire lifespan. Although previous studies have suggested the comparability of the measurement of the Big Five personality traits across adulthood, the generalizability to childhood is largely unknown. The present study investigated the structure of the Big Five personality traits assessed with the Big Five Inventory-SOEP Version (BFI-S; SOEP = Socio-Economic Panel) across a broad age range spanning 11-84 years. We used two samples of N = 1,090 children (52% female, Mage = 11.87) and N = 18,789 adults (53% female, Mage = 51.09), estimating a multigroup CFA analysis across four age groups (late childhood: 11-14 years; early adulthood: 17-30 years; middle adulthood: 31-60 years; late adulthood: 61-84 years). Our results indicated the comparability of the personality trait metric in terms of general factor structure, loading patterns, and the majority of intercepts across all age groups. Therefore, the findings suggest both a reliable assessment of the Big Five personality traits with the BFI-S even in late childhood and a vastly comparable metric across age groups. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Aim: Personality traits and cognitive ability are well‐established predictors of academic performance. Yet, how consistent and generalizable are the associations between personality, cognitive ability, and performance? Building on theoretical arguments that trait-performance relations should vary depending on the demands and opportunities for trait expression in the learning environment, we investigated whether the associations of personality (Big Five) and cognitive ability (fluid intelligence) with academic performance (grades and tests scores) vary across school subjects (German and math) and across ability‐grouped school tracks (academic, intermediate, and vocational). Method: Multiple group structural equation models in a large representative sample of ninth‐grade students (N = 12,915) from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS). Results: Differential associations across school subjects emerged for cognitive ability, Emotional Stability, and Conscientiousness (math > German); and for Openness and Extraversion (German > math). Differential associations across school tracks emerged for cognitive ability, Conscientiousness (academic > intermediate > vocational) and Agreeableness (academic > intermediate > vocational). Personality traits explained more variation in academic performance in the academic than in the other tracks. Conclusion: Most trait-performance relations varied across subjects, tracks, or both. These findings highlight the need for more nuanced and context‐minded perspective on trait-performance relations. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This article explores how the associations between student achievement and achievement growth influence our understanding of the role schools play in academic inequality. Using nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-2011 (ECLS-K:2011), we constructed parallel growth and lagged score models within both seasonal learning and school effects frameworks to study how student- and school-level socioeconomic and racial/ethnic backgrounds relate to student learning. Our findings suggest that seasonal comparative scholars, who generally argue that schools play an equalizing role, and scholars focused on school compositional effects, who typically report that schools exacerbate inequality, come to these contrasting findings not only because they ask different questions but also because they treat student initial achievement differently when modeling student learning.
