Influence of Gender on Academic Achievement Varies with Social Background

DIPF study shows that general statements regarding the educational success of boys or girls as such fall short.

The study is based on the analysis of data from 3,935 students. The research team led by Josefine Lühe conducted achievement tests in reading, mathematics and English as a second language and assessed the students’ socioeconomic status. They then applied various statistical analyses to determine relationships between gender, social background and school achievements. The result: the influence of gender on academic achievement varies with social background.
