Database for School Quality

By providing the Database for School Quality (Datenbank zur Qualität von Schule, DaQS), DIPF enables educational scientists to digitally index and render accessible particularly qualitative research projects in the field of school and instructional quality.

DaQS is a database service provided by and for quantitative empirical educational research. Subject to this service, instruments for assessing school and instructional quality are indexed and prepared on the basis of questionnaires and scaling manuals from relevant studies. The information provided allows differentiated insights into study designs: it is thus possible to compare the instruments used, and estimate the scale quality according to conventional parameters.

DaQS aims to enforce scientific exchange on instruments and promote the distribution of instruments that have already been used. Therefore, full-text scales can be inspected, and they are documented together with information about their validity. Re-usage requires adherence to guidelines for good practice in science, i. e. copyright citation (in analogy to bibliographical citation). The service is openly accessible and free of charge. However, test instruments are accessible in a protected environment.

The database offers:

  • Differentiated information respectively framework data on studies, e. g.
    - Study on the Development of All-day Schools (StEG);
    - Assessment of Student Achievements in German and English as a Foreign Language
    - Pythagoras: Instructional quality, learning behaviour and mathematical understanding;
    - Student Competencies and Attitudes
    - PISA - Programme for International Student Assessment (2000, 2003)
    - PIRLS: Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (2001, 2006)
  • A comprehensive documentation of assessment instruments (including descriptive metadata, full texts of items, references, statistical parameters);
  • Concrete insights into vintage questionnaires;
  • Comprehensive search options – query for instruments at study,scale and item level;

The database offers support to the process of research in the fields of theory building, planning of assessments, operationalisation and documentation.
