Indexing of Records From the German Society for Educational Science

In two projects the records of the council of the German Society for Educational Science (GERA/DGfE) and of selected divisions of the DGfE were archivally indexed in the database of the BBF archive.

Poject Description

After 1945, university members and lecturers from pedagogical colleges were at first united in two separate organizations. The Conference of West German University Pedagogues convened between 1952 and 1967 to discuss issues concerning the establishment of the discipline at universities. At the same time, a working group was founded for pedagogical college members in 1951 (Working Group of Pedagogical Colleges or Conference of Pedagogical Colleges since 1966). In 1963, the German Educational Research Association (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft, GERA/DGfE) was founded by members of the Conference of West German University Pedagogues and some members of the Working Group of Pedagogical Universities" and in 1964, the DGfE was formally established. The DGfE became the largest association in the field of educational science in Germany and was fundamental for the advancement of the discipline.

In order to implement its substantive tasks, it subdivided itself into temporary working groups with a clear work assignment as well as into discipline-specific commissions. In the course of restructuring the internal structure of the DGfE at the turn of the millennium, the commissions were transformed into divisions. Currently, there are 14 divisions, which in turn are divided into 17 subdivisions or working groups. The records of the divisions document the practical work of the DGfE.

The aim of both projects was to make these records, which were handed over to the BBF archive, accessible and thus available for scientific research.

1. Project: "Indexing of the DGfE's Council Records"

In 2010, the DGfE handed over records of the council of the DGfE to the BBF archive. In addition to the founding documents, there are mainly records that depict the work processes of a scientific society with different devisions and working groups, e.g. documents on conferences, publications, cooperations and public relations. As part of the project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the records from the years 1963 to 2010 were indexed and can be searched via the archive database and an open access finding aid:

2. Project: "Indexing of the Records of Selected Divisions of the DGfE"

The project funded by the DGfE made the records of five divisions of the DGfE from the years 1964 to 2012 accessible. The records of the divisions and working groups were handed over to the BBF archive by the division chairmen. The indexing information for the total of 602 files of these five divisions is freely accessible online via the archive database and open access finding aids will soon also be made available for all holdings via the repository peDOCS:

The processing of the records of the other divisions and subdivisions of the DGfE is to be continued successively.
