Interlinking Pictura – Presentation of Bertuch's "Bilderbuch für Kinder" as Semantic Net

The Centre for the Digital Foundation of Research in the Humanities, Social, and Educational Sciences (CEDIFOR) funds a project entitled “Interlinking Pictura – Presentation of Bertuch's "Bilderbuch für Kinder" as semantic net” which focuses on nearly 1,200 plates from a children’s book published by Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) – the “Bilderbuch für Kinder“. A virtual research environment provides a framework for analysing, assessing and newly presenting the pictures in the context of other sources.

Project Description

The Research Library for the History of Education (BBF) at DIPF hosts an archive of images on educational history, Pictura Paedagogica Online (PPO), with the aim of fostering research on images as sources of educational history. In order to improve possibilities regarding the analysis and assessment of images from PPO, functionalities will be further developed. In cooperation with the Information Center for Education (IZB) at DIPF, the pilot project "Interlinking Pictura" is run for the annotation and assessment of a selected and precisely defined corpus from PPO in a virtual research environment. A network presentation is targeted that displays a differentiated presentation and analysis of the selected corpus, together with semantic information concerning the current state of knowledge regarding the respective work and enabling new insights via links to other web services.

The chosen work for the pilot project is a children’s book, Bertuch’s “Bilderbuch für Kinder”. Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822) began publishing his elaborately designed plates in 1790 and a final volume was published posthumously in 1830. The pictures show animals and plants from all over the world, inventions, discoveries and historical events. Bertuch thereby aimed to provide children with an overview of knowledge that was available at the time. The plates were published as single issues containing a page of descriptive text per page of plate. In the first edition, this text was bilingual (German and French), while later editions also included texts written in Italian and English.

A continually updated overview informs about the state of digitisation, considered editions and copies, including those from other libraries.
