Monitoring of Web 2.0 Services

Are user-generated data structures suitable for complementing and completing a professionally maintained web information system?

Project description

The purpose of the doctoral dissertation project "Monitoring of Web 2.0 Services – Folksonomy‐Based Resource and Keyword Suggestions for an Editorial web Portal" is to examine whether user-generated data structures are suitable for complementing and completing a professionally maintained web information system. In the first step, similarities and differences between expert generated and user generated annotations are characterised and evaluated. Quantitative methods taken from information and computer sciences are employed to generate resource and term recommendations based on folksonomies from social bookmarking services. These recommendations are presented to database editors. The aim is to enhance the database regarding its completeness as well as the exhaustiveness of the subject terms. A prototype is implemented and evaluated using data from the German Education Server.

Funding

The project is funded by the general budget of the Institute.
