Modelling and measurement of domain specific problem solving competencies of industrial clerks

The project ‘DomPL-IK’ is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and embedded in the research initiative Ascot (technology oriented measurement of competencies in professional training). This initiative aims at developing test instruments to measure selected competencies of professionally qualified test takers reliably and with high methodological test standards. In the context of the first national sponsorship test instruments and items are developed. They are proved nationwide on the basis of adjusted competency constructs as well as modelling embedded in domain specific problem solving competencies.

Objectives

The alliance project DomPL-IK models and captures the problem solving competency of prospective industrial clerks in their third year of training exemplarily for the activity sphere planning, monitoring and controlling of business processes. The quality of processing practical and practice-oriented problems is measured via a technology based competency assessment.

The subproject ‘psychometric modeling’ at the DIPF (support code 01DB1123) especially aims at the optimisation of the fit between theoretical competence modelling and an empirical based measurement model. The empirical survey and further use of the instruments for a large scale assessment are supported by an optimisation of the study design and the technological assessment as well as evaluation instruments. Beside the now by default used IRT-models newer and more complex IRT-models are used in this project to enable a more adequate and significant illustration of the collected data. Therefore, it is required that the used software possesses the necessary flexibility.

Methods

The psychometric analyses are conducted in growing complexity. Based on simple IRT-models new models are applied that consider further specifications of the study design.
