Searching for Educational Information in the Internet and the German Education Server II (BISIBS II)
Information scientific analysis of information needs, and information–related behaviours of students preparing for professions in education and training
The precursor project initially addressed the thematic field of “searching educational information“ from a perspective encompassing all target groups, focusing on teachers in a second step. This follow-up project, “Searching for Educational Information in the internet and the German Education Server II – Information scientific analysis of information needs, and information–related behaviours of students preparing for professions in education and training“ focuses on students’ education professional information requirements and respective conduct. Students and younger generations of users are a relevant target group for the German Education Server – and the precursor project revealed that this group is so far underrepresented. To specify this, the information-related conduct of younger age groups will be assessed (e.g. active participation on the web and setting up online communities).
The methodological approach of the project relies on a combination of user tests, interviews and analyses of communication behaviours demonstrated by the respective age group in as far as they are visible online. The project aims to find answers to the question where and how scholarly information provisions can actually link up to information processes so that they can continue to deliver competent information services in the future. This will result in fundamental knowledge on the one hand, while on the other hand, practically relevant findings will be generated for optimizing the contents, structure and surface of the German Education Server.
