Abstract (english): Pursuant to the German educational standards in geography the system concept is considered a central basic concept. Being a bridging subject, geography faces special challenges with regard to the imparting of a related system competence when reflecting upon the reciprocal effects of both physical and human geographic (sub-)systems. The article displays the theoretical derivation as well as the empirical assessment of a competency structure model. Within the model accuracy it turns out that a two-dimensional competency structure model including the dimensions "system organization and behavior" and "system-adequate intention to act" shows best the empirical data.
