Abstract (english): In this country study results are presented which are exemplary to be a model of vocational education and train-ing in small countries. For the first time the specific development in a former colonial state - at the edge of Europe but fully integrated in its history - was the subject of analysis. It is the manifoldness of interests which have shaped technical education and vocational training in the Republic of Cyprus. The study verifies that structures of vocational training are a symbiosis of determining factors like culture, politics and economy. The actual need for training which is ultimately the starting point for all those developments described in this publi-cation, arises from the economic framework conditions. It is proved in this study that the situation in the labour market is of great significance for an exact definition of the manpower requirements.
