Abstract (english): Educating democratic citizens has to be identified as one of the focal issues in transformation research devoted to the development in the successor states of the former Soviet Union and in the Central European region. The study is based on the hypothesis, that the role of education in the transformation processes must not be restricted to its function of supporting and executing political decisions, but it also fulfils a contributing and even anticipatingfunction. Within this theoretical framework citizenship education is presented as part of educational reforms and exemplified by the case of Hungary, focussed on the respective guidelines in the National Curriculum.
