Abstract (english): "Search of identity" has become an outstanding topic in the social sciences which has entailed opposite debates dealing with "loss of identity". Both notions are discussed as global and overall societal issues; at the same time they are related to specific national or cultural set-ups as well as to intra- national social groups with regard to age (generation), profession (or job) and social status. Education is essentially involved in this problem area, since children, adolescents and young adults are the explicit subjects and objects ( in certain circumstances the victims!) of "identity building". In the present context "identity" is conceived as an individual-related criterion and value which, under "normal" circumstances, is characterised by far-reaching ( relative) stability and resistance to change. This substantial feature, however, does not include the individual "levels of identity" becoming manifest as "political" (democratic versus non-democratic), "geographical" (local, national, regional, cosmopolitan), "cultural" (ethnic, religious) and "social" (with regard to generation, profession, social status and educational standard). Needless to add that these levels are interrelated and exposed to overlap. The legitimacy of identifying a world-wide "identity crisis" has been actualised by observations and inquiries as concomitant and corollary of globalisation (in its various manifestations) and the "revolts" against this trend. Its impact on education includes families, classrooms and places of nonformal socialisation. This issue can be exemplified by conflicts among the aforementioned "levels", whereby their dependence on border-crossing communication, mobility and migration are worth to be given special attention, in particular in view of the increasing emergence of "mixed" educational set- ups.
