Abstract (english):
In this study, we investigated working memory structure and measurement invariance of working memory in children between 5 and 12 years. In a sample of 1,669 children, we administered a battery of 12 computer-based working memory subtests. We found the same tripartite structure of working memory with a phonological loop, a visual-spatial sketchpad, and a central executive in the age groups 5-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10-12 years; interrelations of the latent factors were invariant across the age groups. Only the relationships between the phonological loop and the central executive were weaker in the 5- to 6-year-olds than in the older age groups. The results corroborate the tripartite working memory model developed by Baddeley (1986) and show that the functional relationships between working memory components are mostly invariant through childhood. In addition, the findings indicate that future research should focus on extending the model by a fourth factor representing inhibition.

Abstract:
Our system combines text similarity measures with a textual entailment system. In the main task, we focused on the influence of lexicalized versus unlexicalized features, and how they affect performance on unseen questions and domains. We also participated in the pilot partial entailment task, where our system significantly outperforms a strong baseline.

Abstract (english):
The article compares three different methods to estimate effects of task characteristics and to use these estimates for model-based proficiency scaling: prediction of item difficulties from the Rasch model, the linear logistic test model (LLTM), and an LLTM including random item effects (LLTM+ e). The methods are applied to empirical data from a German large-scale study of reading comprehension in English as a foreign language (N = 10,543). A priori defined task characteristics were used as predictors for item difficulty; the estimated effects were used to define thresholds between proficiency levels. The comparison of results indicates that the LLTM is too restrictive; the Rasch model and the LLTM+ e yield similar results in terms of implications for scale anchoring.

Abstract (english):
The aim of the present study was to clarify the nature of the ability-specific and position-specific components of Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices (APM) by relating them to a number of types of attention. The ability-specific component represents the constant part of cognitive performance whereas the position-specific component reflects the changes in processing of reasoning items as a result of the changing item position. A special model denoted fixed-links model was used to decompose the data of APM into independent components. Both components were related to two higher-order units of attention, perceptual attention and executive attention, which were derived from the various types of attention. In a sample of 226 participants the position-specific component of APM showed a substantially higher link with executive attention than with perceptual attention whereas the ability-specific component only showed a moderate link with perceptual attention.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
From a cognitive perspective, reading skills depend on efficient component processes of reading comprehension on the word, sentence and text level. In this article, we present the novel computer-based instrument ProDi-L, which uses both accuracy and reaction time as indicators of reliability and efficiency of each component process, thereby allowing for a differentiated and process-oriented assessment of reading comprehension in primary school children. Six subtests were developed to assess related but psychometrically clearly distinguishable component processes. In line with this assumption, a cross-sectional study with 536 children of grades 1-4 confirmed the factorial validity of ProDi-L. Correlations of ProDi-L scores with external measures of reading comprehension (assessed with ELFE 1-6), teacher ratings, and non-verbal intelligence scores also confirmed construct, convergent, and discriminant validity.

Abstract (english):
The importance of socioeconomic status (SES) for psychological functioning over the life span is increasingly acknowledged in psychological research. The Reserve Capacity Model by Gallo and Matthews (2003) suggests that SES is not only linked to physical health but also to the experience of positive and negative emotions. Moreover, due to differential amounts of psychosocial resources, cross-domain associations between emotions and health might differ according to SES. The present study examined age-related developments in positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA), and physical health, as well as dynamic associations between health and emotions in the second half of life. We looked at differences in these trajectories and their interrelationships according to education as one aspect of SES. We used data of up to three waves spanning 12 years from the nationally representative German Ageing Survey (N 3,847, AgeT1 40-85 years). Applying multiple-group dual change score models, we found differential age-related change in PA and physical health, but not in NA, in two groups differing in level of education. NA did only predict change in physical health in low-educated individuals, whereas physical health was equally strongly related to change in PA in both education groups. These results indicate that SES not only affects changes in physical health and emotional functioning but also their interrelationships.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The Self-Description Questionnaire I (SDQ I; Marsh, 1990b) is known as the most validated instrument to measure the multidimensional self-concept of preadolescent children. A German version of the SDQ I is introduced in this study. Its psychometric properties were examined in a sample of N = 589 students of grades 3 to 6. The majority of the scales were proven as reliable and valid in order to measure content-specific facets of self-concept of preadolescents. Validity restrictions, however, emerged for the verbal part of academic self-concept assessed by reading self-concept. Reading self-concept showed similar correlations to students grades in German (r = .32) as general school self-concept (r = .38). Additionally, next to the separation of academic self-concept into a verbal and a math factor, academic self-concept was proven to be further differentiable into competence and affect components. Thus, the results of the German version of the SDQ I reported here make several important suggestions about the structure of self-concept with preadolescent children.

Abstract (english):
Academic self-concept is consistently proven to be multidimensional rather than unidimensional as it is domain specific in nature. However, each specific self-concept domain may be further separated into competence and affect components. This study examines the twofold multidimensionality of academic self-concept (i.e., its domain specificity and competence affect distinction) and extends previous research by applying both within-network and between-network approaches to construct validation. The academic self-concept scales of a German version of the Self Description Questionnaire I (SDQ I) were administered to students from 3rd to 6th grades (N = 1,958). Confirmatory factor analysis models positing separate factors for competence and affect components of math, German, and general school self-concepts fitted better than models assuming domain specificity only. This was demonstrated for the total sample as well as for different subsamples based on age and gender. Although the competence and affect components within each academic self-concept domain were substantially correlated, they were found to be separable constructs. In between-network studies, the competence component was found to be more highly correlated with achievement than the affect component within and across matching academic domains, providing a new argument for the separation of competence and affect components of academic self-concept. Implications of the distinctiveness of competence and affect components of academic self-concept for self-concept theory, research, and practice are discussed.
