Abstract (english):
Both, a high quality of the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) setting and a high quality of the home learning environment foster children's development. However, we know little about the interactions between ECEC quality and the home learning environment. We examine whether the child's attendance in a high ECEC quality setting improves the quality of her home learning environment. We use very rich data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD), which provides detailed panel information through children`s age of 6 months to 9 years on ECEC quality and on the child's home learning environment. Our analysis is based on a sample of 700 children who have been in non-family child care for at least 10 hours/week. We estimate level and value-added specifications and show that ECEC quality improves the home learning environment at various measurement points. The effects sizes indicate that an increase in ECEC quality by one standard deviation increases the home learning environment by about 0.08 standard deviations. Furthermore, results differ by sub-groups: The home learning environment from more advantaged children benefits more from higher ECEC quality. Thus the potential of high ECEC quality on the home learning environment is not effectively used for disadvantaged children. Policies could work on this potential link, in particular. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Verlag)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Beginning teachers are often associated with high strain and the so called reality shock. Although the German teacher induction process is supposed to ensure a smooth transition to becoming a teacher it is often a subject to criticism. Thus, in 2009 a reform of teacher induction was initiated. Applying a quasi-experimental (contrasting the last cohort before and the first after reform) pre-post-post design the current study examines the development of emotional exhaustion at the beginning (Time 1) and end (Time 2) of induction time, and after having worked as fully licensed teacher for one year (Time 3) for beginning teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (N = 1,749). Results of latent change models provided evidence for a second reality shock; following an initial decrease during induction time, emotional exhaustion increased after the first year of fully licensed teaching. Neither the reform nor school type revealed any influencing effects on this development. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The article reflects on a pilot teacher training programme in Tanzania, where videos are used for implementing new teaching methods, but also for initiating a discourse about corporal punishment. The culture of instruction in Tanzania is strictly based on a teacher-centred approach which leaves all activity to the teacher and turns students into passive listeners. In most cases, teachers deal with up to 80 students in one classroom. Therefore, discipline is an important matter of instruction and many teachers still use corporal punishment that is widely accepted in Tanzania. The launched training programme has the aim of implementing learner-centred teaching methods without using corporal punishment and offers Tanzanian teachers the possibility to participate in a workshop that connects these methods with subject-related topics. In the English teaching workshop, the facilitator used filmed English lessons from a German school to discuss with the participants both the application of learner-centred methods and the absence of corporal punishment. The use of these German videos shows advantages but also limitations that are strongly related to the European versus African setting. The article discusses these dimensions on the basis of data that are generated by ethnographical observation and audiotranscripts of the piloted workshop. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The main goal and purpose of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is its system monitoring function. PISA was originally designed to inform the educational policy of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member states by reporting on the performance of students at the age when they are about to leave compulsory education. Moreover, and especially, the assessment of learning contexts has become more and more important throughout the cycles of the PISA program. Today, a broad set of context questionnaires are implemented as part of PISA. They collect information on the learning contexts of different stakeholders in education: namely, students, principals, teachers and parents. The underlying idea is to explain differences in the educational outcomes as assessed by the cognitive tests through the information gathered about differences in educational contexts between countries. Context assessment has always been an important part of the PISA program, but with slightly different intentions and content focus in each study and cycle. The shifting of the major domains and the shifts of interest in measures of learning contexts have heavily influenced the respective topics and design of context assessment. Thus, the context questionnaires as assessment instruments of choice have evolved over time; this process is discussed in the present chapter. This chapter elaborates on the organization of context questionnaire and framework development, including the roles and responsibilities of the different expert groups involved. Changes in the assessment of learning context are discussed and, focusing on PISA 2015, before possible developments for future context assessment in PISA are elaborated upon. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This chapter provides an overarching framework to context assessment in international large-scale assessments (ILSAs), and applies it to discuss relationships between context and cognitive assessment. One of the most critical differences between these two types of assessment is the variety of topics, perspectives, and levels in the education systems that need to be taken into account. This chapter first points out similarities in context assessments across ILSA programs, thus defining a set of common content in context assessment. Although there are important conceptual similarities in context assessments across ILSAs, there are good reasons why this lowest common denominator should be enriched according to the respective study goals and designs of the different programs. This chapter discusses some possible directions and further, provides suggestions as to how the scope of ILSAs may be increased to provide better information about education research and policy in the future. Although this framework model is applicable to learning contexts worldwide, context assessments in ILSAs need to take into account the many similarities and differences of education systems world-wide. A final aim of this chapter therefore is to discuss some critical issues that arise from an international perspective in ILSAs. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This paper investigates the integration of response styles (extreme and midpoint responding and socially desirable responding) and their effects on self-reports among 76,887 teachers from 18 countries in the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). Socially desirable responding (with a positive and a negative impression management factor) and 17 core constructs related to the teaching profession were measured with Likert scales; extreme and midpoint response styles were derived from these measures. Using factor analysis, a general response style was extracted with socially desirable and extreme response styles as positive indicators and midpoint response style as a negative indicator. This general response style was more strongly correlated with constructs of personal involvement, such as teacher efficacy and job satisfaction, than constructs with less personal involvement, at both the individual and country level; however, statistical correction for response styles had negligible effects on the size of cross-cultural differences and country rankings in any construct. We conclude that the general response style can be interpreted as response amplification versus moderation, and that there is no indication that correcting for the general response style increases the validity of cross-cultural comparisons of TALIS teacher data.
