Abstract (english):
Although the provision of extracurricular activities at school has a long tradition in some countries, it was only at the beginning of the millennium that the quality of education and extracurricular activities started to receive increased attention in educational policy and practice in Europe. In 2003, for example, the "all-day school" started to be promoted in Germany and the number of these schools was expanded across the nation. At the same time, "the integrated school day" with organized extracurricular activities as a part of school had just been introduced in Finland with the goal of decreasing the amount of time children spend unsupervised. A similar development can be identified around this time in England, where "extended services" were provided, including extracurricular activities at schools, in an attempt to build cooperation between schools and families. In Switzerland there have been similar changes to the school system over the past decade whereas in the United States of America this development began in the 1990s. In most of the countries represented in this special issue of the Journal for Educational Research Online extracurricular enrichment is offered in schools in the form of after-school activities. The purpose of this special issue is to connect and add to American research in the field by presenting and discussing empirical results on the conditions and characteristics of after-school programs that contribute to a positive development of children and adolescents.

Abstract:
The present study investigates the empirical separability of mathematical (a) content domains, (b) cognitive domains, and (c) content-specific cognitive domains. There were 122 items representing two content domains (linear equations vs. theorem of Pythagoras) combined with two cognitive domains (modeling competence vs. technical competence) administered in a study with 1,570 German ninth graders. A unidimensional item response theory model, two two-dimensional multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models (dimensions: content domains and cognitive domains, respectively), and a four-dimensional MIRT model (dimensions: content-specific cognitive domains) were compared with regard to model fit and latent correlations. Results indicate that the two content and the two cognitive domains can each be empirically separated. Content domains are better separable than cognitive domains. A differentiation of content-specific cognitive domains shows the best fit to the empirical data. Differential gender effects mostly confirm that the separated dimensions have different psychological meaning. Potential explanations, practical implications, and possible directions for future research are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
A substantial proportion of children in western countries do not acquire the level of achievement in literacy, mathematics or science required to participate effectively in today's knowledge-based society (OECD 2006, 2010). These children also face a disproportionally high risk to fall behind their age-appropriate class, to be on a low educational track, to attain only a low educational qualification or even to drop out of school without any formal qualification. Different disciplines have studied these "children at risk of poor educational outcomes" using various concepts and methodological approaches. The aim of this special issue is to bring together these various perspectives and therefore to provide a more comprehensive picture of the diverse "risk factors" that are associated with poor educational outcomes. Theoretical as well as empirical contributions are included. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The present paper summarizes international and national research findings on the general and differential effectiveness of pedagogical work in early childhood education and care settings, evaluations of pilot projects on compensatory preschool education as well programs to support individual learning abilities. Based on these findings, the following conclusions are drawn: First, attending early childhood education and care settings at an early age (after the age of three) has a positive influence on the development of academic competences. Second, the effectiveness of these settings depends on the instructional quality, which could be considerably improved in Germany. Third, pilot projects on programs to support individual learning abilities could show that compensatory effects for disadvantaged groups of children exist, especially when they are interlinked with stimulating conditions in the family and at school. Fourth, effective training programs exist that can be implemented in early childhood education and care. However, a number of challenges need to be met before they can be successfully implemented.

Abstract (english):
The aim of this review is to illustrate the role of working memory and executive functions for scholastic achievement as an introduction to the question of whether and how working memory and executive control training may improve academic abilities. The review of current research showed limited but converging evidence for positive effects of process-based complex working-memory training on academic abilities, particularly in the domain of reading. These benefits occurred in children suffering from cognitive and academic deficits as well as in healthy students. Transfer of training to mathematical abilities seemed to be very limited and to depend on the training regime and the characteristics of the study sample. A core issue in training research is whether high- or low-achieving children benefit more from cognitive training. Individual differences in terms of training-related benefits suggested that process based working memory and executive control training often induced compensation effects with larger benefits in low performing individuals. Finally, we discuss the effects of process-based training in relation to other types of interventions aimed at improving academic achievement.

Abstract:
