Abstract: The article takes its starting point from the current debate on sexual violence in educational institutions. It follows an ethnographic perspective without observing sexual violence directly, arguing that doing so is ethically impossible. Instead it suggests deducing risks for sexual violence through the limits of pedagogical practices. Discussing two case studies (an all-day-school and a residential child care home) and relating their discursive concepts of caring and educating to their practices shows how these institutions address the topic of sexual violence. Reconstructing the practices that constitute a difference between exclusive, one-on-one caring situations and open, publicly accessible educational situations show how transgressions of the limits of corporality to intimacy become institutionalised. We conclude that an ethnography of transgression points to practice arrangements that pose a risk for sexual violence in educational institutions. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): The issue of implementing large-scale reforms has played an important role both in the past as well as in current debates on structural changes and quality measures in education. When putting reforms into practice, individual schools and their leaders, who take a key role in reform processes, are focused. In the context of a comprehensive school reform in Berlin, this contribution presents an implementation of the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ, Hall and Hord 2011), which intends to assess the degree of participants' engagement with innovations in a phased respectively stepwise approach. Recently, the SoCQ questionnaire has been used to build different profiles or types of engagement in reform. Based on N = 196 school leaders, latent profile analyses thus served to identify five types of profiles. Altogether, they indicate that the majority of school leaders are ready to implement the reform and contribute to its optimization. A rather small group remained skeptical with regard to the school reform. With respect to individual leadership characteristics, differences in profile composition could be found for gender, school type, and professional experience. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Enrichment programs provide learning opportunities for a broader or deeper examination of curricular or extracurricular topics and are popular in gifted education. Herein, we investigated the effectiveness of a statewide extracurricular enrichment program for gifted elementary school children in Germany. The program implemented a "grass roots" strategy by which local units developed and offered the enrichment courses, which spanned a broad array of topics. The courses targeted different outcomes, including students' cognitive abilities, school achievement, interests, creativity, self-control, self-concept, and social competencies. We compared third-grade students attending the enrichment program (N =423) with nonattending third-grade students (N = 2,328) by means of a propensity score analysis. Specifically, we controlled for potential selection effects and estimated the average causal effect of the enrichment program for children attending the program. The findings revealed positive program effects on academic achievement but not on the other targeted outcomes. (DIPF/Orig.)

A. Rückmeldungen gegeben werden. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Formative Assessment (FA) refers to eliciting evidence about students' understanding and using the information to support learning, e. g. via individual feedback. There is evidence that FA fosters students' motivation, but less is known about the underlying processes. The present study investigates direct effects of FA on intrinsic motivation as well as the mediating role of students' perceived competence, drawing on Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory. In a randomized, controlled trial, primary school teachers were either assigned to an FA training (n = 17) or to a control group (CG; n = 11). All teachers then taught two science units in their classrooms (FA: n = 319 students, CG: n = 232). Multilevel regression analyses showed a higher perceived competence and a marginally higher intrinsic motivation for FA students after unit 1. After unit 2, both intrinsic motivation and perceived competence were higher in the FA condition, and the impact on intrinsic motivation was significantly mediated by students' perceived competence after the first unit. These results confirm and extend previous findings on the effectiveness of formative assessment on motivational outcomes. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Log data from educational assessments attract more and more attention and large-scale assessment programs have started providing log data as scientific use files. Such data generated as a by-product of computer-assisted data collection has been known as paradata in survey research. In this paper, we integrate log data from educational assessments into a taxonomy of paradata. To provide a generic framework for the analysis of log data, finite state machines are suggested. Beyond its computational value, the specific benefit of using finite state machines is achieved by separating platform-specific log events from the definition of indicators by states. Specifically, states represent filtered log data given a theoretical process model, and therefore, encode the information of log files selectively. The approach is empirically illustrated using log data of the context questionnaires of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). We extracted item-level response time components from questionnaire items that were administered as item batteries with multiple questions on one screen and related them to the item responses. Finally, the taxonomy and the finite state machine approach are discussed with respect to the definition of complete log data, the verification of log data and the reproducibility of log data analyses. Abstract: There is a large body of research documenting gender differences in school achievement. According to Eccles' (1983; 2015) expectancy-value theory it may be assumed that parental gender beliefs affect their parenting. Therefore, we investigate the association between parents' gender beliefs and their child's achievement in German and math (N = 5.240). Moreover, we investigate the association between parental gender beliefs and other family background characteristics. Regression analyses show that a higher socioeconomic status is related to more egalitarian gender beliefs, whereas an immigrant background (Turky, Eastern Europe, other countries) is associated with more traditional beliefs. Traditional gender beliefs are negatively related to boys and girls achievement in German and math. This effect remains stable when family background characteristics are controlled for. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract: Geschlechterunterschiede in Schulleistungen stellen einen vielfach berichteten Befund dar.

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): This narrative review addresses the complex operation of reading acquisition. Focusing on empirical research and meta-analytic insights, early reading development is depicted. Furthermore, the reading process is illustrated referring to the dual-route model and difficulties in reading acquisition are described and explained. Abstract (english): Purpose Collaborative care is effective in improving symptoms of patients with depression. The aims of this study were to characterize symptom trajectories in patients with major depression during one year of collaborative care and to explore associations between baseline characteristics and symptom trajectories. Methods We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial in primary care. The collaborative care intervention comprised case management and behavioral activation. We used the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to assess symptom severity as the primary outcome. Statistical analyses comprised latent growth mixture modeling and a hierarchical binary logistic regression model. Results We included 74 practices and 626 patients (310 intervention and 316 control recipients) at baseline. Based on a minimum of 12 measurement points for each intervention recipient, we identified two latent trajectories, which we labeled 'fast improvers' (60.5%) and 'slow improvers' (39.5%). At all measurements after baseline, 'fast improvers' presented higher PHQ mean values than 'slow improvers'. At baseline, 'fast improvers' presented fewer physical conditions, higher health-related quality of life, and had made fewer suicide attempts in their history. Conclusions A notable proportion of 39.5% of patients improved only 'slowly' and probably needed more intense treatment. The third follow-up in month two could well be a sensible time to adjust treatment to support 'slow improvers'. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: This study investigated associations between parenting stress in parents and self-reported stress in children with children's diurnal cortisol secretion and whether these associations are moderated by known stress-regulating capacities, namely child cognitive control. Salivary cortisol concentrations were assessed from awakening to evening on two weekend days from 53 6-to-7-year-old children. Children completed a cognitive control task and a self-report stress questionnaire with an experimenter, while parents completed a parenting stress inventory. Hierarchical, linear mixed effects models revealed that higher parenting stress was associated with overall reduced cortisol secretion in children, and this effect was moderated by cognitive control. Specifically, parenting stress was associated with reduced diurnal cortisol levels in children with lower cognitive control ability and not in children with higher cognitive control ability. There were no effects of self-reported stress in children on their cortisol secretion, presumably because 6-to-7-year-old children cannot yet self-report on stress experiences. Our results suggest that higher cognitive control skills may buffer the effects of parenting stress in parents on their children's stress regulation in middle childhood. This could indicate that training cognitive control skills in early life could be a target to prevent stress-related disorders. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Organisations for education and care, like schools or residential homes for children, can be places where children and youth are in danger of becoming victims of sexual violence. Specifically this type of organisation, which is conceptualized and/or organised like a family of origin, can be a place of risk for children and young people in some cases. On this basis, a German research project has raised the question of the conditions under which such 'familiarised organisations' become places of risk. How could it be that practices of familiarisation turn into practices of violence against children and young people? The paper presents the main insights from an ethnographical study, focusing on a boarding school that was one of the three different empirical cases included in the study (the other two cases were a regular school and a residential care harne). The patterns of practice that copy and enact a family culture and structure can create a field-specific struggle with the boundaries of professional activities and organisational conditions. In some cases, those struggles present a risk or even danger to the children and young people being cared for if the boundaries themselves are not part of professional reflection and intervention.
