Abstract: Debates concerning the relationship between home and school had continued throughout the 19th century, they culminated at the turn of the 20th century, leading up to the time of the Weimar Republic. This is […] the time which [the authors] wish to examine more closely in [this article] because it shows a complex fabric of contradictory interests. [The authors] suspect that questions of influence among teachers and parents arose time and again in the field of progressively oriented schools, which aspired to implement changes with respect to lessons as well as school organisation. Progressive schools furthermore propagated participation in the Free School Community. These schools were particularly dependent on parents, regardless of whether the school was a private or test school that had to be politically approved. [The authors] will exemplarily depict activities and discussions of headmasters and parents and between teaching staff and parent councils at two Prussian schools. One school is a private school with what one could call progressive teaching: Berthold-Otto Schule in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The other is a progressive oriented "Sammelschule", i.e. a school based on a newly initiated comprehensive form, which was also understood as an endorsement of progressive teaching. [The authors'] choice of these schools was guided by the assumption that these schools considered themselves progressive, which forced them to find new ways to develop their cooperation with parents. First [the authors] would like to explain the historical background in Prussia from a legal perspective, how legislation evolved concerning parent councils (which were legally recognized in 1919), and which reactions this provoked on the teachers' side. Given the two examples, [they] will show how parents positioned themselves in relation to teachers and in what way and in what areas they gained power in the Foucauldian sense of influence. Finally, [the authors] will briefly discuss the question of whether this should be conceived of as a disempowerment of teachers, and if so, in what respect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: This chapter describes perspectives for utilizing natural language processing (NLP) to analyze artifacts arising from mass collaboration on the web. In recent years, the amount of user-generated content on the web has grown drastically. This content is typically noisy and un- or at best semi-structured, so that traditional analysis tools cannot properly handle it. To discover linguistic structures in this data, manual analysis is not feasible due to the large quantities of data. In this chapter, we explain and analyze web-based resources of mass collaboration, namely, wikis, web forums, debate platforms, and blog comments. We introduce recent advances and ongoing efforts to analyze textual content in two of these resources with the help of NLP. This includes an approach to discover flows of knowledge in online mass collaboration as well as methods to mine argumentative structures in natural language text. Finally, we outline application scenarios of the previously discussed techniques and resources within the domain of education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The present framework intends to explain the goals and the rationale for choosing appropriate questionnaire content, guiding both the questionnaire development and the forthcoming reports. The document is organized into two main parts: (1) defining the core content of the PISA questionnaires, and (2) elaborating a modular structure for broader coverage of policy issues.
The first part of this document links the current Framework to the overarching (cross-cycle) structure of PISA context assessment set out in the PISA 2012 Framework (OECD 2013, p. 168 ff.). The constructs that need to be covered for monitoring trends in education are revisited, with reference to the general background of Educational Effectiveness Research. Measures which have been used previously for initial reporting, for international indicators (published in "Education at a Glance"), and for secondary analyses are reviewed, culminating in an outline of core content that should be assessed in all cycles, for all participants.
The second and larger part of this document explores the full breadth of policy issues to be covered, structured by 19 modules, and explains how the most important modules-i.e. those judged as high priority modules by the PISA Governing Board-have been implemented in PISA 2015. Here, detailed references to current research are provided. (DIPF/Autor)

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to get a first approximation of the usefulness of online forums with regard to information seeking and knowledge generation. This study captures the characteristics of knowledge generation by examining the pragmatics and types of information needs of posted questions and by investigating knowledge related characteristics of discussion posts as well as the success of communication. Three online forums were examined. The data set consists of 55 threads, containing 533 posts which were categorized manually by two researchers. Results show that questioners often ask for personal estimations. Information needs often aim for actionable insights or uncertainty reduction. With regard to answers, factual information is the dominant content type and has the highest knowledge value as it is the strongest predictor with regard to the generation of new knowledge. Opinions are also relevant, but in a rather subsequent and complementary way. Emotional aspects are scarcely observed. Overall, results indicate that knowledge creation predominantly follows a socio-cultural paradigm of knowledge exchange. Although the investigation captures important aspects of knowledge building processes, the measurement of the forums' knowledge value is still rather limited. Success is only partly measurable with the current scheme. The central coding category "new topical knowledge" is only of nominal value and therefore not able to compare different kinds of knowledge gains in the course of discussion. The investigation reaches out beyond studies that do not consider that the role and relevance of posts is dependent on the state of the discussion. Furthermore, the paper integrates two perspectives of knowledge value: the success of the questioner with regard to the expressed information need and the knowledge building value for communicants and readers. Abstract: Students evaluate their achievement in a specific domain in relation to their achievement in other domains and form their self-concepts accordingly. These comparison processes have been termed dimensional comparisons and shown to be an important source of academic self-concepts in addition to social and temporal comparisons. Research on the internal/external frame of reference model (I/E model) has frequently found negative effects of students' achievement on their academic self-concept between different scholastic domains (mathematics and the language of instruction) that are interpreted as contrast effects of dimensional comparisons. There is mixed evidence with regard to whether negative contrast effects or positive assimilation effects occur when students compare their achievement in domains that are more similar. In this study, we extended the original I/E model with 3 science domains (biology, chemistry, and physics). Using structural equation modeling, we analyzed the domain-specific self-concepts, grades, and test scores of a representative sample of 9th-grade students in Germany (N = 20,050) across 5 domains. Mathematics, physics, and chemistry showed contrast effects to German, whereas small assimilation effects were found between mathematics, physics, and chemistry. This effect pattern was present for both grades and test scores. Achievement in mathematics and the language of instruction affected self-concepts in the sciences, whereas achievement in the sciences had no effect on self-concepts in other subjects. The results support the hypotheses derived from dimensional comparison theory that both contrast and assimilation effects can result from dimensional comparisons and that the 3 science subjects are affected differentially by these comparisons.
