Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Self-regulation of learning (SRL) positively affects achievement and motivation. Therefore, teachers are supposed to foster students' SRL by providing them with strategies. However, two preconditions have to be met: teachers need to diagnose their students' SRL to take instructional decisions about promoting SRL. To this end, teachers need knowledge about SRL to know what to diagnose. Only little research has investigated teachers' knowledge about SRL and its assessment yet. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify teachers' conceptions about SRL, to investigate their ideas about how to diagnose their students' SRL, and to test relationships between both. To this end, we developed two systematic coding schemes to analyze the conceptions about SRL and the ideas about assessing SRL in the classroom among a sample of 205 teachers. The coding schemes for teachers' open answers were developed based on models about SRL and were extended by deriving codes from the empirical data and produced satisfactory interrater reliability (conceptions about SRL: κ = 0.85, SE = 0.03; ideas about assessing SRL: κ = 0.63, SE = 0.05). The results showed that many teachers did not refer to any regulation procedure at all and described SRL mainly as student autonomy and self-directedness. Only few teachers had a comprehensive conception of the entire SRL cycle. We identified three patterns of teachers' conceptualizations of SRL: a motivation-oriented, an autonomy-oriented, and a regulation-oriented conceptualization of SRL. Regarding teachers' ideas about assessing their students' SRL, teachers mainly focused on cues that are not diagnostic of SRL. Yet, many teachers knew about portfolios to register SRL among students. Finally, our results suggest that, partly, teachers' ideas about assessing SRL varied as a function of their SRL concept: teachers with an autonomy-oriented conceptualization of SRL were more likely to use cues that are not diagnostic of SRL, such as unsystematic observation or off-task behavior. The results provide insights into teachers' conceptions of SRL and of its assessment. Implications for future research in the field of SRL will be drawn, in particular about how to support teachers in diagnosing and fostering SR among their students.

Abstract:
As Internet sources provide information of varying quality, it is an indispensable prerequisite skill to evaluate the relevance and credibility of online information. Based on the assumption that competent individuals can use different properties of information to assess its relevance and credibility, we developed the EVON (evaluation of online information), an interactive computer-based test for university students. The developed instrument consists of eight items that assess the skill to evaluate online information in six languages. Within a simulated search engine environment, students are requested to select the most relevant and credible link for a respective task. To evaluate the developed instrument, we conducted two studies: (1) a pre-study for quality assurance and observing the response process (cognitive interviews of n = 8 students) and (2) a main study aimed at investigating the psychometric properties of the EVON and its relation to other variables (n = 152 students). The results of the pre-study provided first evidence for a theoretically sound test construction with regard to students' item processing behavior. The results of the main study showed acceptable psychometric outcomes for a standardized screening instrument with a small number of items. The item design criteria affected the item difficulty as intended, and students' choice to visit a website had an impact on their task success. Furthermore, the probability of task success was positively predicted by general cognitive performance and reading skill. Although the results uncovered a few weaknesses (e.g., a lack of difficult items), and the efforts of validating the interpretation of EVON outcomes still need to be continued, the overall results speak in favor of a successful test construction and provide first indication that the EVON assesses students' skill in evaluating online information in search engine environments. Abstract:
Qualitative coding schemas are an essential part of qualitative research used in methods like Grounded Theory. To date, there is no platform to share these coding schemas. Sharing and exchanging these coding schemas has a great potential when it comes to the traceability of qualitative research and well as the re-use of coding schemas. Based on an interview study with qualitative researchers, we propose concepts for integrating a new platform for sharing qualitative coding schemas. Based on theoretical work by Birnholtz and Bietz (2002), it became clear that an easy-to-use system can foster the acceptance and the willingness of researchers to share their coding schemas. We identified three major points to focus for this on: the governance of th platform, the development of the ontology itself and integrating the sharing of qualitative coding schemas into the workflow of researchers by enabling direct upload from the qualitative coding software. Abstract (english):
This chapter summarises and discusses how participants evaluated the HAND in HAND programme. It is based on responses to two questions asked during semi-structured focus group interviews which comprised part of a more comprehensive evaluation of the HAND in HAND programme. The findings complement the experimental outcome evaluation but they also serve a formative purpose, i.e. to help identify the starting points for improving the programme. In terms of the summative outcome evaluation, the results show that many participants liked the programme (particularly the teachers, less so the students) and that the programme had positive short-term effects on the participants' mood and on the group atmosphere in several groups. However, only a few participants observed long-term effects. One reason for the latter finding may be that many school staff groups reported difficulties in imple-menting exercises, practices or ideas from the programme within their everyday pedagogical practice. Hence, the programme could probably gain from including longer-term support with respect to implementation. Other suggestions for improvement derived from the interviews are designing the intervention according to a real 'whole-school' approach and better supporting the autonomy of students. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract:
We analyze the subtle mechanisms at work in the interaction between families and schools that underlie social inequalities at the transition point from elementary school into secondary-school tracks in Berlin, Germany. We do so by combining quantitative data from a large-scale survey and assessment study (N = 3,935 students and their parents) with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with parents (N = 25) collected during the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 school years. The quantitative analyses show that students from high-socioeconomic status (SES) families were more likely to enter the academic track than were students from low-SES families, even if they performed equally well on a standardized achievement test, had the same grades in school, and received the same track recommendation from their teachers. The qualitative analyses illustrate the many ways in which parents intervene during the transition process, with high-SES parents having particularly effective ways of getting what they want for their children.
