Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Based on a coding of 39 videotaped three-lesson units on the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem, three teaching patterns were identified: lecturing, developing based on a problem, and discovery based on a problem. The analysis showed no effect of the teaching patterns on student achievement, whereas effects were discovered on students' perceived learning quality. The discovery teaching pattern had negative effects on the emotional quality of learning. However, this pattern exhibited high degree of externally rated cognitive activation. The lecturing approach to the introduction to the Pythagorean Theorem supported students' self- perceived understanding. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This article reports results of a four-year longitudinal study that investigated the impact of specific and non-specific precursors on mathematical school achievement. Preschool quantity- number competencies (QNC) predicted mathematical achievement in primary school. Furthermore, basic arithmetic fact retrieval in Grade 1 had an impact on early mathematics school achievement. The influence of socioeconomic status and number naming speed, assessed in kindergarten, became especially important at the end of Grade 4. Particularly, a subgroup of mathematically low-achieving children in Grade 4 had already performed more poorly than normal children in tasks assessing preschool QNC, number naming speed, and basic arithmetic fact retrieval, as well as nonverbal intelligence and socioeconomic status. Abstract (english):
This longitudinal study explored the importance of kindergartenmeasures of phonological awareness, working memory, and quantity-number competencies (QNC) for predicting mathematicalschool achievement in third graders (mean age 8 years 8 months). It was found that the impact of phonological awareness and visual-spatial working memory, assessed at 5 years of age, was mediatedby early QNC, which predicted math achievement in third grade. Importantly, and confirming our isolated number words hypothesis, phonological awareness had no impact on higher numericalcompetencies (i.e., when number words needed to be linked withquantities [QNC Level II and above]) but predicted basic numericalcompetencies (i.e., when number words were isolated from quantities[QNC Level I]), explaining the moderate relationship between early literacy development and the development of mathematical competencies.(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Autor)
Abstract (english):
This article presents findings from a German-Swiss video- based classroom study. The research examines how three basic dimensions of instructional quality impact the development of students' understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem. The study sample comprised 19 German and 19 Swiss mathematics classes. A three-lesson introductory unit on the Pythagorean Theorem was videotaped in all classes. Multilevel analyses revealed both classroom management and cognitive activation to have positive effects on mathematics achievement. The results also provide empirical evidence that cognitive activation and a supportive climate moderate the relationship between mathematics-related interest and mathematics achievement.(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study examines the relationships of vocational interests and mathematical literacy both cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Extending previous research, the results of Holland's RIASEC (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) scale scores are compared with results from a reductionist approach using individual interest profiles (including the parameters level, differentiation, and orientation). Both analyses find significant relations between interests and mathematical literacy. The scale score analyses reveal positive associations of Realistic interests with mathematical literacy, whereas Artistic interests show a negative association. Interest profiles from a dimensional representation show individuals with interest orientations close to the Realistic domain score highest on mathematical literacy, with those with interests in both Artistic and Social domains scoring lowest. Results from profile analyses suggest that interest differentiation moderates the interest-ability relation. Only interest profiles are predictive for mathematical literacy over and above covariates, indicating that interest profiles are more robust predictors than the scale scores. Analyses show that interest profiles are a valid reduction of the scale score models. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Longitudinal studies have investigated the development of students' achievement in upper secondary level in Germany. While mathematical literacy partly remains stable regarding the mean, partly increased, English achievement mainly increased. Furthermore, huge differences in achievement between students in basic courses compared to those in advanced courses are well known. These differences can be traced back to different achievement levels at the beginning of the upper secondary level and an additional differentiation within the two different course levels. We conducted an exploratory study to investigate the development of students' achievement within the first year after transition in a German academic track school. Students of two consecutive cohorts (N = 135) participated twice in standardized achievement tests in mathematics and English. Results showed mathematical literacy significantly decreasing, while English achievement increased substantially. For a more differentiated view on the development we split students in two groups, depending on which course level (basic or advanced) they intended to choose in the 12th grade. For both subjects and points of measurements students who intended to choose an advanced course outperformed the other students. But there was no interaction effect between course level and students' achievement over time within the11th grade.(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In this longitudinal study, we examined the effect of vocational interest profiles on the development of achievement in two core subjects in upper secondary level. Vocational interests according to Holland (1997) were modelled by individual profiles including the parameter level as well as the dimensions Things/People and Data/Ideas (Prediger, 1982). Furthermore, we included self-concept and course level in our analyses and investigated the mediating effects of interest profiles on the self-concept achievement-relation and the course level achievement-relation respectively. Our results revealed a positive effect of the Things/People dimension on the development of mathematics achievement. Contrary to our assumptions, we found no association between vocational interests and the development of achievement in English. We confirmed significant positive effects of self-concept and course level on the change in achievement in both subjects. Only in mathematics vocational interests turned out to mediate these effects. In sum, this study revealed subject-specific differences in the effects of vocational interest profiles on the development of achievement.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
