Abstract:
Abstract (english):
To become skillful readers, children have to acquire the ability to translate printed words letter by letter into phonemic representations (phonological recoding) and the ability to recognize the written word forms holistically (orthographical decoding). Whereas phonological recoding is the key for learning to read and useful for recognizing unknown or low-frequent words, orthographical decoding is often more efficient and takes less time, thus facilitating reading processes on the sentence and text level. Several studies with English-speaking children provided evidence for the relevance of the two routes but the question whether and to what extent both word recognition skills contribute to reading comprehension in young German readers requires further clarification. Based on data from a cross-sectional study with German primary school children we investigated whether and to what extent both types of word recognition skills are associated with sentence (N = 666) and text comprehension skills (N = 149) and how these relationships develop from Grade 2 to 4. The results indicate that both phonological recoding skills and orthographical decoding skills are important for reading comprehension skills. Their relative weight does not change across grade levels. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The aim of this review is to illustrate the role of working memory and executive functions for scholastic achievement as an introduction to the question of whether and how working memory and executive control training may improve academic abilities. The review of current research showed limited but converging evidence for positive effects of process-based complex working-memory training on academic abilities, particularly in the domain of reading. These benefits occurred in children suffering from cognitive and academic deficits as well as in healthy students. Transfer of training to mathematical abilities seemed to be very limited and to depend on the training regime and the characteristics of the study sample. A core issue in training research is whether high- or low-achieving children benefit more from cognitive training. Individual differences in terms of training-related benefits suggested that process based working memory and executive control training often induced compensation effects with larger benefits in low performing individuals. Finally, we discuss the effects of process-based training in relation to other types of interventions aimed at improving academic achievement.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This longitudinal study examines the differences between monolingual children and children with German as a second language (GSL) in reading predictors. In structural equation modeling, we assessed the relationships between different reading predictors such as nonverbal intelligence, phonological working memory, language skills, rapid naming, letter knowledge, and phonological awareness in preschool and at the beginning of elementary school. The relationship patterns between the predictors were consistent for monolingual (n = 111) and GSL children (n = 282). However, the predictors' influence on reading skills at the end of first and second grade of elementary school varied between the language groups: In monolingual children, phonological awareness was the strongest predictor of decoding speed as an indicator of reading ability. However, in GSL children phonological awareness had no significant influence on decoding speed, whereas nonverbal intelligence explained a major part of the variance in decoding speed.

Abstract (english):
In this study, we investigated working memory structure and measurement invariance of working memory in children between 5 and 12 years. In a sample of 1,669 children, we administered a battery of 12 computer-based working memory subtests. We found the same tripartite structure of working memory with a phonological loop, a visual-spatial sketchpad, and a central executive in the age groups 5-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10-12 years; interrelations of the latent factors were invariant across the age groups. Only the relationships between the phonological loop and the central executive were weaker in the 5- to 6-year-olds than in the older age groups. The results corroborate the tripartite working memory model developed by Baddeley (1986) and show that the functional relationships between working memory components are mostly invariant through childhood. In addition, the findings indicate that future research should focus on extending the model by a fourth factor representing inhibition.

Abstract:
There is mounting evidence that children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities (ID) of nonspecific aetiology perform poorer on phonological short-term memory tasks than children matched for mental age indicating a structural deficit in a process contributing to short-term recall of verbal material. One explanation is that children with ID of nonspecific aetiology do not activate subvocal rehearsal to refresh degrading memory traces. However, existing research concerning this explanation is inconclusive since studies focussing on the word length effect (WLE) as indicator of rehearsal have revealed inconsistent results for samples with ID and because in several existing studies, it is unclear whether the WLE was caused by rehearsal or merely appeared during output of the responses. We assumed that in children with ID only output delays produce a small WLE while in typically developing 6- to 8-year-olds rehearsal and output contribute to the WLE. From this assumption we derived several predictions that were tested in an experiment including 34 children with mild or borderline ID and 34 typically developing children matched for mental age (MA). As predicted, results revealed a small but significant WLE for children with ID that was significantly smaller than the WLE in the control group. Additionally, for children with ID, a WLE was not found for the first word of each trial but the effect emerged only in later serial positions. The findings corroborate the notion that in children with ID subvocal rehearsal does not develop in line with their mental age and provide a potential explanation for the inconsistent results on the WLE in children with ID. Abstract (english):
The aim of the present study was to investigate whether preschool children with limitations in the visual or phonological working memory are disadvantaged in the acquisition of school relevant precursor skills at school entry. A sample of 92 children was divided into three subgroups depending on their performance in visual and phonological working memory tasks in their last year before school entry (T1). At T1 the children were tested on cognitive measures as well as quantity-number competencies and phonological awareness tasks. Shortly after school entry (T2), the precursor skills were assessed again. The findings indicate that preschool children with reduced phonological working memory capacity show weaker numerical competencies before school entry and weaker phonological awareness skills at the beginning of school compared to an unimpaired control group. On the other hand, visual working memory limitations in preschool only affect numerical competencies before and particularly after school entry.

Abstract:
In a cross-sectional study, we examined the relationship between the quality of lexical representations and text comprehension skill in German primary school children (Grades 1-4). We measured the efficiency and accuracy of orthographical, phonological, and meaning representations by means of computerized tests. Text comprehension skill was assessed with a standardized reading test with questions requiring recognition of text information and inferencing. Both the accuracy of and the efficiency of access to the three types of lexical representations contributed to explaining interindividual variation in text comprehension skill. Results from a path-analytic model suggest a specific causal order of the three components of lexical quality with the quality of meaning representations partly mediating the effects of form representations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
In order to evaluate the implementation of compensatory support regarding school relevant skills during the last year before school entry in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, more than 900 children participated in a longitudinal study with three preschool measurement points starting at about one-and-a-half years before school entry. A fourth and a fith measurement point were realized in Grade 1 to assess the acquisition of reading and math skills at school. Data analyses were done to find answers to the following three questions: (1) Does compensatory support contribute to development of sufficient levels of school relevant precursor skills during the last year before school entry? (2) Is the probability of schoolreadiness for children at risk increased by the project implementation? (3) Are there transfer effects on the acquisition of reading skills and math skills during the first year of schooling? The data analyses confirm positive effects on the compensatory support on school relevant precursor skills during the last year before school entry as well as an increase of the probability of schoolreadiness for children at risk. However, the question regarding transfer effects on the acquisition of reading and math skills during the first year of schooling remained unresolved. In summary, the effects of the implemented compensatory support program turned out to be positive. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The neural correlates of developmental dyslexia have been investigated intensively over the last two decades and reliable evidence for a dysfunction of left-hemispheric reading systems in dyslexic readers has been found in functional neuroimaging studies. In addition, structural imaging studies using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) demonstrated grey matter reductions in dyslexics in several brain regions. To objectively assess the consistency of these findings, we performed activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on nine published VBM studies reporting 62 foci of grey matter reduction in dyslexic readers. We found six significant clusters of convergence in bilateral temporo-parietal and left occipito-temporal cortical regions and in the cerebellum bilaterally. To identify possible overlaps between structural and functional deviations in dyslexic readers, we conducted additional ALE meta-analyses of imaging studies reporting functional underactivations (125 foci from 24 studies) or overactivations (95 foci from 11 studies ) in dyslexics. Subsequent conjunction analyses revealed overlaps between the results of the VBM meta-analysis and the meta-analysis of functional underactivations in the fusiform and supramarginal gyri of the left hemisphere. An overlap between VBM results and the meta-analysis of functional overactivations was found in the left cerebellum. The results of our study provide evidence for consistent grey matter variations bilaterally in the dyslexic brain and substantial overlap of these structural variations with functional abnormalities in left hemispheric regions.
