Abstract:
The worst performance rule (WPR) predicts that the slowest trials in reaction time (RT) tasks are more strongly related to intelligence than the fastest trials. To date, the WPR was observed mainly in young adults. The present study examined if the WPR holds not only in young adults but also in children and older adults in three kinds of RT tasks (simple RT, choice RT, and inhibition). Results showed that in each age group slowest and fastest trials were related to intelligence but the former correlated with intelligence to a greater extent than the latter. These results support the assumption that the WPR can be generalized across the lifespan.

Abstract:
The present studies aimed at investigating whether children's risk for self-regulatory failure implicates poor academic outcomes even before the start of formal instruction. Therefore, we analyzed the association between children's self-regulation abilities (i.e., operationalized with different paradigms) and academic achievement (i.e., early math skills). In Study 1, we found that parent-rated self-regulation predicted early math skills in preschool children. Additionally, the time that children managed to successfully delay a response predicted early math skills. In Study 2, we found that self-regulated behavior in preschool children as measured in a newly developed computerized delay task predicted early math skills. The results are discussed with respect to the importance of children's self-regulation abilities for successful academic achievement. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between capacity to consent to treatment as measured by the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment (MacCAT-T) and severity of cognitive impairment as measured with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). It also looks at the role of verbal retrieval in this relationship. We hypothesized that the often-quoted correlation between the MacCAT-T and the MMSE lies mainly in the joint dependence on verbal retrieval ability. Potential subjects were recruited from memory clinics, senior citizen meeting places, and a university program for seniors. Data of 149 people over 54 years, 49 of whom had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or mixed dementia, were used. The relationship between capacity to consent to treatment, verbal retrieval, and MMSE was examined using a structural equation modeling framework. The findings suggest that verbal retrieval is a confounding method factor. In the informed consent process for people with dementia, verbal memory loads should be minimized to provide a more valid measure of their capacity to consent to treatment. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Although most children in Germany attend an early childhood education and care (ECEC) setting for at least one year, it remains uncertain whether all children have equal opportunity to attend a setting that provides high quality education and care. The paper therefore researches social disparities in the chance to attend a setting providing better classroom quality and possible differential effects of quality education and care for children's mathematical development. For this purpose, the study analyses data of 547 children in 97 ECEC settings that were included in the BiKS longitudinal sample. Results of logistic regression analyses display that children with migration background bear a lower chance to attend high quality settings; comparable effects cannot be found for children in families with lower educational or less advantaged economic backgrounds. Furthermore, multi-group latent growth curve models can proof developmental advantages in mathematics achievement for children without a migration background and children in advantaged families with a better educational or more favorable economic background. The paper once more underlines the importance of high quality early childhood education and care. The discussion emphasizes this effect taking into account the result of social disparities in attending such settings for children with a migration background.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The cooperation between school and family is an integral part of teachers' daily routine. One key challenge is to respond adequately to the different family contexts, which become particularly visible in how parents get involved in their children's homework. This paper analyzes the connection between family background and parental involvement in homework on the basis of data from 1685 students in Switzerland. We were able to find correlations between family background, especially immigrant background, and parental involvement in homework. The authors close by discussing some implications of the findings for teacher education. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Comparative tests based on the educational standards set by the Conference of Education Ministers (Vergleichsarbeiten; German abbreviation: VERA) have for many years been an important instrument in competence diagnostics. They serve primarily school and curriculum development; sometimes, however, they are also used for the comprehensive information of the school supervision authorities concerning the performance level of individual schools. The contribution examines how far teachers are aware of these functions and in what way they are related to characteristics of classroom instruction and to the students' competencies. The study is based on data provided by the national assessment study carried out by the IQB (Institute for Educational Quality Improvement) in 2011 on the level of primary education, which focused on competencies in the subjects math and German. The analyses show that teachers who consider VERA a means for the development of teaching orientate their lessons much more towards the development of competencies and undertake a more detailed differentiation in their lessons. Furthermore, students of such teachers achieve better results in both reading and math, even after allowance for individual and class-related background characteristics. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
In a longitudinal study, auditory and visual temporal order thresholds (TOTs) were investigated in primary school children (N = 236; mean age at rst data point: 6;7) at the beginning of Grade 1 and the end of Grade 2 to test whether rapid temporal processing abilities predict reading and spelling at the end of Grades 1 and 2. Auditory and visual TOTs differed but showed comparable developmental trajectories over 20 months. Visual TOTs were not predictive of literacy measures; auditory TOTs in Grade 1 were the best predictor. Interestingly, they were related to spelling in Grade 2 while auditory TOTs in Grade 2 were not, suggesting that rapid auditory processing abilities have a causal in uence on literacy development.

Abstract (english):
The support of multilingualism within the European Union is one of the central concerns of the Commission of the European Communities. The contextually-bound and flexible use of several languages is regarded as a key qualification, both for individual and social purposes. Within the framework of education in early infancy, the countries involved (in the CotEC) are supposed to promote initiatives that support multilingualism in European societies (European Commission 2005). So, how can the raising of awareness for interlingual phenomena, be encouraged systematically in the context of language instruction and how do students with different language learning experiences benefit from this instructional support? The following contribution addresses this question in the context of English as a second language and German language instruction. It is a shortened and complemented version of an article written by Göbel, Vieluf, and Hesse (2010), previously published in German language. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The paper at hand compares the effects of bilingual language use and biliteracy on third language reading comprehension. Data of 280 9th-graders from 14 schools in Hamburg, Germany, were analyzed for the research. Using a questionnaire on language use at home, 142 students were identified as monolingual speakers of German and 138 students as bilingual speakers of Turkish and German. All students were tested in reading comprehension in German (GRC) and English (ERC), which is the third language of the bilinguals. Students with a background in Turkish were tested in Turkish reading comprehension (TRC), too. On the basis of the TRC and GRC test the bilingual students were grouped into fully biliterate students and partially biliterate. Controlling for a set of comprehensive cognitive and socio-economic variables, multivariate regression analysis revealed a negative association between the oral use of Turkish and German in daily life and English reading comprehension but a positive association of biliteracy in Turkish and German and English reading comprehension. In contrast to a bilingualism, which is related to spoken language only, biliteracy seems to be positively associated with third language acquisition. (DIPF/Orig.)
