Abstract (english): Which factors help young adults choose educational pathways leading to higher educational attainment? Academic self-concept (ASC), achievement, and socioeconomic background have all been found to be important predictors of postsecondary educational choices and success. Although research has shown that student composition in secondary school may affect some of these predictors, only a few studies (mostly from the United States) have investigated the effects of student composition on postsecondary educational outcomes. The results showed that students with similar individual achievement had lower postsecondary educational attainment if they graduated from secondary schools with higher mean achievement. It has been proposed that social comparison processes explain this negative context effect (big-fish-little-pond effect [BFLPE]). In contrast, students with the same individual socioeconomic status (SES) had higher postsecondary educational attainment if they graduated from secondary schools with a higher mean SES. In the present study, we investigated the effects of achievement-related and socioeconomic student composition on subsequent educational outcomes using data from a longitudinal study in Germany. Contrary to previous studies, our results showed that student composition had little relevance for later educational pathways. There was a small, long-lasting, indirect BFLPE of achievement-related composition in secondary school on postsecondary educational outcomes through students' ASC. Furthermore, individual SES was strongly related to postsecondary educational outcomes, whereas being in an academic-track school with a higher or lower mean SES was not relevant for postsecondary educational pathways.

Abstract: Self-concept in mathematics (MSC) and interest in mathematics are important predictors of whether a student will choose to major in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field at university. Research on the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE) has shown that both predictors are affected by the achievement composition of students in schools. That is, given the same individual ability, students in higher achieving schools exhibit lower MSC and interest in mathematics than students in lower achieving schools due to social comparison processes. The BFLPE has been replicated in high school settings many times, but less is known about the long-term effects of this context effect. In the present study, we investigated the long-term effects of the BFLPE on the aspiration to major in and the actual decision to major in a STEM field at university. We used data from a German longitudinal study. The results showed no direct BFLPE on the aspiration to enroll in a STEM major at the end of high school or on actual enrollment in a STEM major 2 years after graduating from high school. However, small negative indirect effects of the BFLPE via MSC and interest in mathematics on the aspiration to and enrollment in a STEM major occurred. In sum, the longitudinal BFLPE on STEM major choice was small. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): The present study starts at the assumption that developing all-day schools is only possible, if multiprofessional collaboration amongst practitioners with different backgrounds is developed. A vast range of empirical studies is available, yet, it seems that studies have emphasized nearly all aspects of all-day schools as being of major importance for developing better collaboration amongst practitioners from different backgrounds. In order to extract the relevant factors, this study investigated experts on school development. These experts have been asked how multiprofessional collaboration can be developed and their answers were analyzed using Content Analysis (Mayring). As a result, six major categories could be extracted from the data: pedagogical practitioners, pedagogical team-practices, written agreements, space and time for collaboration, context, and routines of exchanging information. These aspects are described and discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: The three basic dimensions framework for assessing quality teaching distinguishes the dimensions of cognitive activation, student support, and classroom management. Research from various disciplines suggest, however, that cognitive support is not sufficiently represented in the framework as yet. In the present study, two-level factor analyses based on student ratings of teaching quality in science education (2,659 students, grades 4 and 6) suggest four dimensions of teaching quality, with cognitive support being a separate dimension. Moreover, cognitive support predicted student achievement. The results suggest that including cognitive support as a separate dimension contributes to a more comprehensive, yet parsimonious framework of teaching quality. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Guter Unterricht umfasst anspruchsvolle Inhalte und Methoden sowie gute Klassenführung, Konstruktive Unterstützung und Kognitive Aktivierung. (DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Good teaching involves challenging content and methods as well as good classroom management, constructive support, and cognitive activation. This paper discusses how these criteria can be realized with face-to-face and "distance" teaching. Good teaching in this sense can also help to reduce inequity. In order to avoid a "support trap", i. e., the perception of instructional support as a "punishment", consequences of the pandemic should be discussed holistically across school forms. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): In research on teaching, the primary focus lies in identifying teacher behavior that positively influences relevant student outcomes. To adequately design the study, statistically model and interpret the results poses challenges for researchers. For example, the inherent multilevel structure in studies on teaching requires the application of multilevel models. This research used one exemplary data set, to which varying multilevel models were applied, thus illustrating how these models variously affect the substantial interpretation of the research question. The research question in all settings concerned the effects of teacher behavior on student outcomes. The overall purpose of this paper is to give an overview of modeling and interpreting results regarding the effectiveness of teaching appropriately. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): The German Music Council and federal state music councils commissioned a study on music education at primary schools in Germany, and central findings are reported here. The introductory analysis of the situation informs about different stipulations across federal states regarding music education and their implementation, particularly with respect to instruction by non-skilled teachers. The following considerations concerning the future need for trained music teachers take the situation into account, i.e. the teachers due to retire as well as the number of younger teachers aged under 35 years, together with the development of primary school population figures, the number of music teaching graduates with a second level state exam in the past decade, the number of students enrolled in music teaching at primary school level, and the number of career changers who opt for teaching music at primary school level. This information is used for model calculations on the prospective number of music teachers in 2028. Possible consequences for music education are described as well as measures that need to be taken.

Abstract (english): The PISA studies provide unique opportunities to investigate the competencies and attitudes of 15-year-olds across the world. Past research investigating environmental awareness (EA) in PISA 2006 found associations between EA and science-related competencies and attitudes. Investigating EA in the PISA studies may have important implications for education for sustainable development (ESD): results may show which factors should be considered in educational interventions to enhance students' EA. Cross-national analyses of EA may provide insights into the predictors of EA on a local, national or international level. This study investigates the individual, school, and country level predictors of EA in PISA 2015 (365,194 students, 12,594 schools, 53 countries). The multi-level regression analysis on EA reveals that most of the variance is located at the student level. On the individual level, variables related to science learning in school are associated with EA across all countries. This study also compares the degrees of EA in the 2006 and 2015 populations. The results show similar degrees of EA in 2006 and 2015. Altogether, the study provides cross-country evidence on important aspects that should be addressed in successful ESD programs. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): Bullying is a serious issue among adolescents worldwide. It has been conceptualized as a type of physical or indirect peer victimization that occurs repeatedly over time and is characterized by a systematic abuse of power. Being bullied at school severely affects victims' health and well-being. What protects students from these consequences? We investigate feelings of belonging -i. e., the feeling that one is accepted, included, respected, and valued in the respective social environment - as a possible compensator for bullying consequences across different cultures. We hypothesize that being bullied is less severe for students who have strong feelings of belonging. We use data from 319,057 15-year-old students across 47 countries. Multilevel regression analyses replicated that bullying and well-being are negatively associated. Further, the results indicated, as expected, that feelings of belonging compensate for the negative impact that bullying has on well-being. Practical implications as well as limitations are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): As the field of social and emotional learning has developed and grown over the last decades, so too has the number of different programmes seek-ing to achieve various SEL goals, resulting in a significant body of research on the topic. Meanwhile, there has also been an increase in the number of programmes aimed at developing intercultural competencies. For the pur-pose of developing a new programme for social and emotional learning, we reviewed the key characteristics of existing evidence-based social, emo-tional and intercultural learning programmes, including their theoretical and conceptual backgrounds, content, methodological and organisation-al aspects, and their evaluation. This review has revealed multiple similar-ities between these two approaches (i.e. social and emotional and intercul-tural), presenting a rationale for their integration. (DIPF/Orig.)
