Abstract (english):
Reading and understanding digital text that is organized in a non-linear hypertext format can be challenging for students as it requires a more self-directed selection of text pieces compared to reading linear texts. This study aims at investigating how individual differences in students' skills in comprehending digital text can be explained by their navigation behavior and various underlying skills. Students' navigation behavior was operationalized by their selection of task-relevant hypertext pages; students' abilities in terms of reading linear texts, dealing with computer interfaces more generally, and evaluating the usefulness of online information were considered as underlying skills. We hypothesized that basic computer skills and evaluating online information would explain performance in digital reading above and beyond reading skills measured with linear texts. These effects were expected to be mediated by navigation behavior. A subsample of 15-year-old German students who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 was investigated (N = 888). The results confirmed the hypothesized mediation between linear reading, navigation behavior, and digital reading. Moreover, navigation behavior also mediated the relation between basic computer skills and digital reading but not the relation between evaluating online information and digital reading. Implications regarding processes in digital reading and navigation of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
We examined the incremental effect of academic interest on achievement beyond general cognitive ability and students' background characteristics in five domains (math, German, biology, chemistry, and physics). We analyzed a nationally representative German dataset of 39,192 ninth-grade students and found a unique effect of interest over and above the other predictors across the five domains, both for class grades and standardized test scores. The effect was present between persons (in a given domain, students with higher interest showed higher achievement) and within persons (the same student showed a higher achievement in domains she/he was more interested in). The effects were stronger for grades than test scores and stronger in math than in other domains. The results emphasize the positive relation between interest and academic achievement in different domains. Furthermore, they expand the literature by emphasizing the role of the achievement measure and the domain as moderators of the interest-achievement relation and by showing that interest can predict both inter- and intraindividual variation in achievement. Abstract:
Debates concerning the relationship between home and school had continued throughout the 19th century, they culminated at the turn of the 20th century, leading up to the time of the Weimar Republic. This is […] the time which [the authors] wish to examine more closely in [this article] because it shows a complex fabric of contradictory interests. [The authors] suspect that questions of influence among teachers and parents arose time and again in the field of progressively oriented schools, which aspired to implement changes with respect to lessons as well as school organisation. Progressive schools furthermore propagated participation in the Free School Community. These schools were particularly dependent on parents, regardless of whether the school was a private or test school that had to be politically approved. [The authors] will exemplarily depict activities and discussions of headmasters and parents and between teaching staff and parent councils at two Prussian schools. One school is a private school with what one could call progressive teaching: Berthold-Otto Schule in Berlin-Lichterfelde. The other is a progressive oriented "Sammelschule", i.e. a school based on a newly initiated comprehensive form, which was also understood as an endorsement of progressive teaching. [The authors'] choice of these schools was guided by the assumption that these schools considered themselves progressive, which forced them to find new ways to develop their cooperation with parents. First [the authors] would like to explain the historical background in Prussia from a legal perspective, how legislation evolved concerning parent councils (which were legally recognized in 1919), and which reactions this provoked on the teachers' side. Given the two examples, [they] will show how parents positioned themselves in relation to teachers and in what way and in what areas they gained power in the Foucauldian sense of influence. Finally, [the authors] will briefly discuss the question of whether this should be conceived of as a disempowerment of teachers, and if so, in what respect. (DIPF/Orig.)

Breaking the double-edged sword of effort/trying hard. Developmental equilibrium and longitudinal relations among effort, achievement, and academic self-concept

Abstract:
Ever since the classic research of Nicholls (1976) and others, effort has been recognized as a double-edged sword: while it might enhance achievement, it undermines academic self-concept (ASC). However, there has not been a thorough evaluation of the longitudinal reciprocal effects of effort, ASC, and achievement, in the context of modern self-concept theory and statistical methodology. Nor have there been developmental equilibrium tests of whether these effects are consistent across the potentially volatile early-to-middle adolescence. Hence, focusing on mathematics, we evaluate reciprocal effects models (REMs) over the first 4 years of secondary school (grades 5-8), relating effort, achievement (test scores and school grades), ASC, and ASC × Effort interactions for a representative sample of 3,144 German students (Mage = 11.75 years at Wave 1). ASC, effort, and achievement were positively correlated at each wave, and there was a clear pattern of positive reciprocal positive effects among ASC, test scores, and school grades - each contributing to the other, after controlling for the prior effects of all others. There was an asymmetrical pattern of effects for effort that is consistent with the double-edged sword premise: prior school grades had positive effects on subsequent effort, but prior effort had nonsignificant or negative effects on subsequent grades and ASC. However, on the basis of a synergistic application of new theory and methodology, we predicted and found a significant ASC × Effort interaction, such that prior effort had more positive effects on subsequent ASC and school grades when prior ASC was high - thus providing a key to breaking the double-edged sword. Abstract:
Abstract (english):
Following the typological approach of research on parenting styles, the present study uses latent profile analysis to identify different profiles of parental homework involvement in families. Furthermore, the paper examines whether the profiles differ with respect to other aspects of family socialization as well as children's academic development. On the basis of survey data from 2,668 fifth and sixth graders and their parents, three profiles of parental homework involvement were revealed. The profiles differed along the dimensions of emotional support, the provision of structure, and interference/control. Families characterized by different homework involvement profiles also differed with respect to various aspects of family socialization. Moreover, students' academic development differed according to which family profile they belonged to. By applying a typological approach, the present study complements previous research on parental homework involvement, which has focused on analyzing separate dimensions of parental behavior. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
In educational research, optimistic self-concepts are often characterized as preferable. However, there are very few longitudinal studies investigating the effects of positive versus negative self-evaluation bias on achievement development. In the present study, the amount of self-evaluation bias of 925 first-graders was calculated via residual scores and related to students' mathematical achievement development from Grade 1 to 4 using cross-lagged panel analyses. The results showed that the residual scores had an effect on achievement only at the beginning of primary school. The results are discussed with regard to the theoretical assumptions of positive effects of optimistic self-concepts. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Research has shown that participation in extracurricular activities has a positive effect on adolescents' social behaviour and academic performance; however, the reciprocal influence of extracurricular activities and leisure on the development of adolescents' academic performance and social behaviour is unclear. In our study, we investigate the effect of school based and out-of-school leisure activities on adolescent's social and scholastic development. We also explore how students' gender, socioeconomic status and ethnicity influence their choice of, and engagement in activities. A sample of 5278 students (females 50%; migrant background 26%) filled in questionnaires in grade 5 and 7 and provided personal background information as well as evidence of their engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities, their social behaviour and academic performance. Using latent class analysis, we distinguished five identity-related patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities among 5th-graders. We found a connection between adolescents' gender, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity and their choice of, and engagement in, extracurricular and leisure activities, social behaviour and grades. We also identified a link between adolescents' patterns of engagement in extracurricular and leisure activities and developmental tendencies in their social behaviour and scholastic achievement between grades 5 and 7. Abstract (english):
We investigated students' emotions as intervening variables between teaching methods, motivational and performance prerequisites, and outcomes. 144 students from German schools were assigned to two conditions. In one condition, students were prompted to develop multiple solutions for modelling problems that were missing information. In the other condition, students had to find one solution for modelling problems that were not missing information. Students' interest and performance were measured before and after the 5-lesson teaching unit, and students' enjoyment and boredom were measured during the teaching unit. The path analyses revealed: (1) Students who developed more solutions enjoyed their mathematics lessons more and were less bored than students in the other condition; (2) Enjoyment affected students' interest and performance at posttest and mediated the effects of prompting them to find multiple solutions on interest at posttest; (3) Students' enjoyment during learning mediated the effects of prior interest on interest at posttest.
