Abstract: The goal of environmental education is ultimately to enable a person to strive for and to attain a more ecological way of life. In this article, we begin by distinguishing three forms of environmental knowledge and go on to predict that people's attitude toward nature represents the force that drives their ecological behavioral engagement. Based on data from 1,907 students, we calibrated previously established instruments to measure ecological behavior, environmental knowledge, and attitude toward nature with Rasch-type models. Using path modeling, we corroborated our theoretically anticipated competence structure. While environmental knowledge revealed a modest behavioral effect, attitude toward nature turned out to be, as expected, the stronger determinant of behavior. Overall, we propose a competence model that has the potential to guide us into more evidence-based ways of promoting the overall ecological engagement of individuals. (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Autor)

Title: How institutions change. Perspectives on social learning in global and local environmental contexts
Published: Opladen: Leske u. Budrich, 2003
Publication Type: 2. Herausgeberschaft; Sammelband (keine besondere Kategorie)
Language: Englisch
Keywords: Ökologie; Soziales Lernen; Institution; Veränderung
Abstract (english): Institutional dimensions of global environmental change are explored from different disciplinary perspectives. The book is not a simple "sampler", its special feature is that the individual authors representing the disciplines political science, sociology and human geography to cultural and developmental psychology and cultural anthropology developed a common position in numerous workshops. Thus questions raised in one chapter are taken up and explored further in others. The main questions are: How do institutions change? What can we learn about possibilities of and barriers to induced institutional changes? Where are potentials for more reflexive and more enduring processes of social learning? The book seeks to answer these questions in three section: Reshaping Institutions, Linking Institutions to Social Practice and Institutionalising Social Learning. It builds on the idea that social learning processes can constitute a driving force of institutional change.

Abstract (english): This article deals with the reconstruction of individual and collective action space and responsibility for action in the web of common normative rule systems and formal institutions such as law and politics. The qualitative empirical data on the extent to which individuals feel that they themselves or others are responsible for ecological remedial action demonstrate cognitive and moral differences of interviewees with respect to the interpretation of vidual, collective and institutional action space. Structural criteria of contextualised moral judgements constitute the core of varying arguments: The differentiation between heteronomous and autonomous moral judgements, i.e. orientated either toward intervention and control or to participation, as well as the differentiation of such judgements into an interpersonal or transpersonal sphere of interpretation, i.e. a more communitarian context of interaction or a more functionally differentiated concept of society. The reconstruction of the data shows that the "everyday types of morality" represent different notions of politics, society and democracy.

Perspectives on Social Learning in Global and Local Environmental Contexts", herausgegeben von H. Breit, A. Engels, T. Moss & M. Troja.
Abstract (english): This article describes the issues and theoretical frame of the book "How Institutions Change. Perspectives on Social Learning in Global and Local Environmental Contexts", edited by H Breit, A. Engels, T. Moss & M. Troja. In addition to explaining the book's structure and content the specific social sciences way of understanding institutions is developed and shown to be fundamental for institutional change. From this point of view the differentiation of informal and formal institutions (traditions, cultural values and non-codified norms vs. constitutions, common law, regulations and statutes) is essential. Informal institutions as a kind of social praxis can become a driving force of institutional change, if individual and collective action, guided by responsibility and based on open cooperation and communication, is reflected in the formal structures of institutions. In the light of demands for and empirically increasing institutional and individual autonomy and flexibility in different societal fields (economy, education, politics) the interaction of informal and formal institutions is necessary for efficient action. Their interplay is decisive for communicatively structured social learning, which needs individual and collective commitment as well as institutions responsive to this commitment. Expertise and interests of stakeholders can and must be arbitrated. This is a crucial challenge for the educational system.

Title: Gerechtigkeit und Natur.
Publication Type: 1. Monographien (Autorenschaft); Monographie (keine besondere Kategorie)
Language: Deutsch
