Abstract: In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Rolle von Sprachkenntnissen und kultureller Ähnlichkeit für Inklusionsentscheidungen von deutschen und bildungsinländischen Studierenden (N = 117, 77 % weiblich, MAlter = 21,69, SD = 2,35, Range 18-28 Jahre) gegenüber internationalen Studierenden untersucht. Dabei wurde auch die Rolle des Kontexts (Leistungssituation vs. Freizeitsituation) betrachtet. Mit Hilfe hypothetischer Szenarien konnte gezeigt werden, dass bei der Entscheidung zwischen einer Person, die kulturell ähnlich ist, aber nur über geringe Deutschkenntnisse verfügt, und einer Person, die zwar über gute Deutschkenntnisse verfügt, aber kulturell unähnlich ist, die Wahl eher auf die kulturell unähnliche Person mit guten Deutschkenntnissen fällt. Dies war insbesondre im Leistungskontext der Fall. Auch in den offenen Begründungen der Inklusionsentscheidungen zeichnet sich die Bedeutung von Sprachkenntnissen ab, ebenfalls besonders im Leistungskontext. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Theoretischer Hintergrund: Für Kinder mit Lernstörung (LS) hören die Lernproblemen nicht mit dem Unterrichtsschluss auf, sondern setzen sich bei den Hausaufgaben fort. Dennoch ist über die Hausaufgabenpraxis bei LS wenig bekannt. Fragestellung: Ziel war es, die familiäre Hausaufgabenpraxis bei Kindern mit und ohne LS längsschnittlich zu untersuchen. Methode: 82 Eltern (davon 47 von einem Kind mit LS) wurden zu vier Zeitpunkten befragt und latente Veränderungsmodelle gerechnet. Ergebnisse: Eltern von Kindern mit LS berichteten mehr Kontrolle und Konflikte bei den Hausaufgaben und nahmen ihre Hilfe als weniger kompetent wahr. Auch forderten sie von ihren Kindern weniger Anstrengung ein. Längsschnittlich nahmen bei beiden Gruppen die Hausaufgabenkontrolle sowie die familiäre Belastung ab. Diskussion und Schlussfolgerung: Die schwierigere Hausaufgabensituation bei Kindern mit LS legt nahe, das Thema bei der Diagnostik anzusprechen und zu eruieren, wie die Familien entlastet werden können. Abstract (english): Theoretical Background: Although research suggests that parents become more involved in the homework process when their child exhibits problems in school, most research has not focused on children with learning disorders (LDs). Therefore, little is known about how parents of children with LDs support their children's learning. In addition, only a few longitudinal studies exist, even though parental homework involvement is likely to change throughout schooling. Objective: Parental homework involvement for children with and without LDs during the transition from primary to secondary school was examined. Specifically, we investigated (a) interindividual differences in the amount of homework support provided by parents of children with and without LDs, as well as (b) the linear trend and the interindividual stability of parents' homework involvement. Method: In this 2-year longitudinal study, 82 parents (47 parents of a child with LDs) completed a questionnaire on homework involvement at four measurement points every 6 months. The questionnaire consisted of four scales: (a) parental competence regarding help with homework, (b) parental homework control, (c) parent-child conflicts during homework, and (d) parents' effort attribution. Results: Bivariate correlations between the scales were mostly insignificant with two exceptions: (1) the more competent parents felt in helping with homework, the more they made use of control, and (2) parents who made more use of homework control, reported more parent-child conflicts than parents who controlled their child's homework to a lesser extent. Latent change score models revealed that parents continuously reduced homework control over the 2-year period and that parent-child conflicts during homework also significantly decreased - both for families of children with LDs and those without. The interindividual differences between parents, however, remained relatively constant over time, suggesting high rank-order stability of parental homework involvement. The results further showed that compared with parents of children without LDs, parents of children with LDs reported a higher frequency of homework control and increased homework conflict. They also felt less competent to effectively help with homework. Significant group differences were also found concerning parents' emphasis on effort: Parents of children with LDs attributed school success less strongly to effort. Discussion and Conclusion: Overall, the study showed that the homework situation is more stressful in families of children with LDs than in those without LDs. The longitudinal results further support the idea that parental homework involvement does not remain consistent over time but rather undergoes some changes as children grow older and transfer to secondary school. Thus, caution is warranted when generalizing results from cross-sectional studies on parental homework involvement to different grade levels. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often exhibit comorbid specific learning disorders. In clinical samples, comorbidity in girls with ADHD tends to be more common than in boys with ADHD. However, this is not the case in studies of random samples. In this paper gender differences in the comorbidity of ADHD symptoms and learning disorders in reading, spelling and math are explored in a population-based sample of 2605 3rd and 4th graders (1304 girls) without symptoms of ADHD and 415 (141 girls) with symptoms of ADHD. Girls with ADHD symptoms had higher ratios of comorbid math disorders than boys with ADHD symptoms, but not with reading or spelling disorders. Math achievement was predicted by gender and by symptoms of inattention. Girls with ADHD symptoms and math disorders received the same amount of additional support from teachers or therapists as boys with ADHD symptoms and math disorders. Our results highlight the importance of exploring the increased comorbidity of specific learning disorders in children with ADHD symptoms and especially with math disorders in girls with ADHD symptoms. Implications for providing suitable interventions and preventing the accumulation of academic problems are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Early experiences of childhood sexual or physical abuse are often associated with functional impairments, reduced well-being and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Prior studies have addressed whether the traumatic experience itself or adult psychopathology is linked to these limitations. To approach this question, individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and healthy individuals with and without a history of child abuse were investigated. We used global positioning system (GPS) tracking to study temporal and spatial limitations in the participants' real-life activity space over the course of one week. The sample consisted of 228 female participants: 150 women with PTSD and emotional instability with a history of child abuse, 35 mentally healthy women with a history of child abuse (healthy trauma controls, HTC) and 43 mentally healthy women without any traumatic experiences in their past (healthy controls, HC). Both traumatized groups-i.e. the PTSD and the HTC group-had smaller movement radii than the HC group on the weekends, but neither spent significantly less time away from home than HC. Some differences between PTSD and HC in movement radius seem to be related to correlates of PTSD psychopathology, like depression and physical health. Yet group differences between HTC and HC in movement radius remained even when contextual and individual health variables were included in the model, indicating specific effects of traumatic experiences on activity space. Experiences of child abuse could limit activity space later in life, regardless of whether PTSD develops. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: Durch erweiterte Zeitfenster haben Ganztagsschulen die Möglichkeit, außerunterrichtliche Lern- und Unterstützungsangebote von Schülerinnen und Schülern anders zu orchestrieren. Durch die Auswertung von repräsentativen Trenddaten einer bundesweiten Schulleitungsbefragung (N=3509) können drei unterschiedliche Klassen der Organisation von Lern- und Förderangeboten an Ganztagsschulen gefunden werden. Zu diesen drei Klassen wird jeweils eine Fallstudie präsentiert, die ein vertiefendes Verständnis des jeweiligen Lern- und Förderarrangements ermöglicht. Neben Schulen, die sich im Kern auf die Hausaufgabenbetreuung fokussieren (singuläres Arrangement), gibt es auch Schulen, die zusätzlich eine größere Bandbreite an Lern- und Förderangeboten bereithalten. Hier erscheint eine inhaltlich-konzeptionelle Vernetzung mit anderen Lern- und Förderangeboten schwierig umzusetzen (paralleles Arrangement). Die dritte Klasse von Schulen sind solche, die ein breites Lern- und Förderangebot mit Lernzeiten kombinieren, wobei sich in der Fallstudie besondere Möglichkeiten einer Vernetzung der unterschiedlichen Lern- und Förderangebote zeigten (vernetztes Arrangement). Abstract (english): We are interested in identifying "malleable" school and classroom practices to enhance immigrant students' learning. Using PISA 2015 data from Germany, Italy, and Spain we test the differential associations of school-level practices with achievement and sense of belonging at school for students with and without an immigrant background. We found that (1) in-school ability grouping was invariably, negatively related to achievement of both student groups, and the effects were stronger for immigrant than nonimmigrant students; (3) grading based on "hard" factors was not related to achievement, but it showed differential associations with sense of belonging in Germany; (4) grading based on "soft" factors and provision of extracurricular activities also showed mixed associations with the outcomes across countries and did not fulfil the potential to enhance immigrant students' outcomes. Abstract: Technological and digital progress benefits physical activity (PA) research. Here we compiled expert knowledge on how Ambulatory Assessment (AA) is utilized to advance PA research, i.e., we present results of the 2nd International CAPA Workshop 2019 "Physical Activity Assessment - State of the Science, Best Practices, Future Directions" where invited researchers with experience in PA assessment, evaluation, technology and application participated. First, we provide readers with the state of the AA science, then we give best practice recommendations on how to measure PA via AA and shed light on methodological frontiers, and we furthermore discuss future directions. AA encompasses a class of methods that allows the study of PA and its behavioral, biological and physiological correlates as they unfold in everyday life. AA includes monitoring of movement (e.g., via accelerometry), physiological function (e.g., via mobile electrocardiogram), contextual information (e.g., via geolocation-tracking), and ecological momentary assessment (EMA; e.g., electronic diaries) to capture self-reported information. The strengths of AA are data assessment that near real-time, which minimizes retrospective biases in real-world settings, consequentially enabling ecological valid findings. Importantly, AA enables multiple assessments across time within subjects resulting in intensive longitudinal data (ILD), which allows unraveling within-person determinants of PA in everyday life. In this paper, we show how AA methods such as triggered e-diaries and geolocation-tracking can be used to measure PA and its correlates, and furthermore how these findings may translate into real-life interventions. In sum, AA provides numerous possibilities for PA research, especially the opportunity to tackle within-subject antecedents, concomitants, and consequences of PA as they unfold in everyday life. In-depth insights on determinants of PA could help us design and deliver impactful interventions in real-world contexts, thus enabling us to solve critical health issues in the 21st century such as insufficient PA and high levels of sedentary behavior. Abstract: Objective: This study investigated whether self-reported ADHD symptoms fluctuate substantially within adolescents from day to day, and examined the underlying symptom factor structure on a within- and between-person level. Method: Adolescents (N = 166) rated their ADHD symptoms over the phone on eight consecutive evenings (total ratings: n = 1,264). Results: ADHD symptoms showed substantial fluctuations within adolescents from day to day, as indicated by within-person standard deviations and intraclass correlation coefficients. Both a two-level factor model with three correlated factors (inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) and a two-level bifactor model with a general ADHD symptom factor and a specific inattention factor provided acceptable to good accounts of the structure underlying daily ADHD symptom ratings on the between- and the within-person level. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that adolescents' ADHD symptoms fluctuate from day to day and highlights the need for intensive diagnostic processes with repeated symptom assessments and interventions that address symptom fluctuations. Abstract (english): Children with reading and/or spelling disorders have increased rates of behavioral and emotional problems and combinations of these. Some studies also find increased rates of attention-deficit-/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, anxiety disorder, and depression. However, the comorbidities of e.g. arithmetic disorders with ADHD, anxiety, and depression have been addressed only rarely. The current study explored the probability of children with specific learning disorders (SLD) in reading, spelling, and/or arithmetic to also have anxiety, depression, ADHD, and/or conduct disorder. The sample consisted of 3014 German children from grades 3 and 4 (mean age 9;9 years) who completed tests assessing reading, spelling as well as arithmetic achievement and intelligence via a web-based application. Psychopathology was assessed using questionnaires filled in by the parents. In children with a SLD we found high rates of anxiety (21%), depression (28%), ADHD (28%), and conduct disorder (22%). Children with SLD in multiple learning domains had a higher risk for psychopathology and had a broader spectrum of psychopathology than children with an isolated SLD. The results highlight the importance of screening for and diagnosing psychiatric comorbidities in children with SLD.
