Abstract (english): Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with/without dyslexia was investigated using a double dissociation design. Neuropsychological performance representing the core deficits of the two disorders was measured in order totest the common deficit hypothesis. Phonological short-term memory, morpho-syntactical language, and central executive processing (manipulating and switching) tasks were administered to four groups of 10-14 year old children (ADHD-only n = 20, dyslexia-only n = 20, ADHD+ dyslexia n = 20, and controls n = 19). Comparisons of performance on these tasks were carried out using 2 (ADHD yes/no) × 2 (dyslexia yes/no) factorial analyses of variance and covariance. Significant main effects were found for dyslexia (language processing functions) and for ADHD (EF switching). In the case of the EF manipulating a main effect for both dyslexia and ADHD was revealed. Effect sizes of mean performance indicated that all three impaired groups shared a common deficit in working memory which could reflect a cognitive overlap partly explaining the high rate of co-occurring dyslexia and ADHD. Abstract (english): Three negative priming studies were carried out to examine whether this paradigm allows a separation of the effects of aging on access, deletion, and restraint control of inhibition. In each study 24 younger (18-35) and 24 older (57-82) adults were asked to identify pictures. The results reveal difficulties among older adults in preventing the access of distracting perceptual input into responses; however, the ability to restrain inappropriate answers and the ability to delete once- relevant information are not affected by age. Title: On the seperability of cognitive abilities related to Posner's attention components and their contributions to conceptually distinct attention abilities related to working memory, action theory, and psychometric assessment

Abstract (english): The study investigates whether five often postulated attention abilities related to Posner's attention components (Posner & Boies, 1971; Posner & Rafal, 1987) - alertness, spatial attention, focused attention, attentional switching, and divided attention - represent empirically distinguishable cognitive mechanisms from an individual differences perspective, and to what extent these abilities contribute to conceptually distinct attention abilities related to working memory (Baddeley, 1986), action theory ( Neumann, 1992), and psychometric assessment (e.g., Brickenkamp, 1994; Moosbrugger & Goldhammer, 2007). A total of 232 participants completed 12 attention tasks intended to measure the ablities of interest. First, confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) revealed that the five attention ablilities based on Posner's work are moderately related, but clearly distinguishable. The proposed confirmatory factor model consists of one common and five specific attentition ability factors. Second, structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that these five specific attention abilities contribute differentially to attention abilities associated with working memory, action theory, and psychometric assessment, wheras the common factor contributes significantly to all of them. Especially, the results suggest that both divided attention and attentional switching are involved in action-oriented attention abilities as well as in attention abilities associated with psychometric assessment ("concentration"). Abstract (english): Priming is characterized by a sensitivity of reaction times to the sequence of stimuli in psychophysical experiments. The reduction of the reaction time observed in positive priming is well-known and experimentally understood ( Scarborough et al., J. Exp. Psycholol: Hum. Percept. Perform., 3, pp. 1-17, 1977). Negative priming - the opposite effect - is experimentally less tangible (Fox, Psychonom. Bull. Rev., 2, pp. 145-173, 1995). The dependence on subtle meter changes (such as response-stimulus interval) usually varies. The sensitivity of the negative priming effect bears great potential for applications in research in fields such as memory, selective attention, and ageing effects. We develop and analyse a computational realization, CISAM, of a recent psychological model for action decision making, the ISAM (Kabisch, PhD thesis, Friedrich-Schiller-Universitt, 2003), which is sensitive to priming conditions. With the dynamical systems approach of the CISAM, we show that a single adaptive threshold mechanism is sufficient to explain both positive and negative priming effects. This is achieved by comparing results obtained by the computational modelling with experimental data from our laboratory. The implementation provides a rich base from which testable predictions can be derived, e.g. with respect to hitherto untested stimulus combinations (e.g. single-object trials). (DIPF/Orig.)

(DIPF/Orig./Kie.)
