Abstract:
Are internalizing and externalizing behavior problems interrelated via mutually reinforcing relationships (with each behavior leading to increases over time in levels of the other behavior) or mutually suppressing relationships (with each behavior leading to decreases over time in levels of the other behavior)? Past research on the directionality of these relationships has led to ambiguous results, particularly in adolescence. Furthermore, the extent to which prior results will generalize to adolescents with low levels of cognitive abilities remains unknown. This second limit is particularly important, given that these adolescents are known to present higher levels of externalizing and internalizing behaviors than their peers with average-to-high levels of cognitive abilities, and that the mechanisms involved in the reciprocal relationships between these two types of behaviors may differ across both populations. This study examines the directionality of the longitudinal relationships between externalizing and internalizing behavior problems as rated by teachers across three measurement waves (corresponding to Grades 8-10) in matched samples of 138 adolescents (34.78 % girls) with low levels of cognitive abilities and 556 adolescents (44.88 % girls) with average-to-high levels of cognitive abilities. The results showed that the measurement structure was fully equivalent across time periods and groups of adolescents, revealing high levels of developmental stability in both types of problems, and moderately high levels of cross-sectional associations. Levels of both internalizing and externalizing behaviors were higher among adolescents with low levels of cognitive abilities relative to those with average-to-high levels of cognitive abilities. Finally, the predictive analyses revealed negative reciprocal longitudinal relationships (i.e., mutually suppressing relationships) between externalizing and internalizing problems, a result that was replicated within samples of adolescents with low, and average-to-high levels of cognitive ability. Abstract:
This study examines the development of self-esteem in a sample of 138 Australian adolescents (90 males; 48 females) with cognitive abilities in the lowest 15% (L-CA) and a matched sample of 556 Australian adolescents (312 males; 244 females) with average to high levels of cognitive abilities (A/H-CA). These participants were measured annually (Grade 7 to 12). The findings showed that adolescents with L-CA and A/H-CA experience similar high and stable self-esteem trajectories that present similar relations with key predictors (sex, school usefulness and dislike, parenting, and peer integration). Both groups revealed substantial gender differences showing higher levels of self-esteem for adolescent males remaining relatively stable over time, compared to lower levels among adolescent females which decreased until midadolescence before increasing back. Abstract (english):
The present study evaluates different latent variable modeling approaches (confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory structural equation modeling, and bifactor modeling), which are used to describe these individual perceptions with respect to their factor structure, measurement invariance, and the relations to selected educational outcomes (achievement, self-concept, and motivation in mathematics). On the basis of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 large-scale data sets of Australia, Canada, and the USA (N = 26,746 students), we find support for the distinction between three factors of individual students' perceptions and full measurement invariance across countries for all modeling approaches. In this regard, bifactor exploratory structural equation modeling outperformed alternative approaches with respect to model fit. Our findings reveal significant relations to the educational outcomes. This study synthesizes different modeling approaches of individual students' perceptions of instructional quality and provides insights into the nature of these perceptions from an individual differences perspective. Implications for the measurement and modeling of individually perceived instructional quality are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Previous research on differences and similarities in self-concept of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian students did not consider the possible differentiation between competence and affect components. As a result, it is unknown whether previously found differences between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students' self-concepts are the result of their beliefs about their abilities or their feelings about specific domains. Thus, the present study aims to examine and compare the structure, the mean levels, and the relations to achievement measures of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian students' self-concepts in academic and non-academic domains when taking the competence-affect separation into account. Self-concepts in math, English, school, physical ability, and art were measured with 1809 secondary school students including 343 Indigenous students. For Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that all self-concept facets measured could be separated into competence and affect components although the correlations between competence and affect components were high, particularly for art and physical ability self-concepts. Non-Indigenous students demonstrated higher levels of school competence, English competence, English affect, and math competence self-concepts. Indigenous students displayed higher levels of physical ability competence self-concept while no group differences could be found for school affect, math affect, physical ability affect, and art competence and art affect self-concepts. Invariance tests revealed an invariant factor structure and invariant relations between the multiple self-concept facets and achievement factors across Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Hence, the present study adds to our understanding of the similarities and differences regarding Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian students' self-concepts.

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The idea that emerges from this special issue on School leadership and its effects on student achievement is that the future of this field of research lies not simply with more complex statistical analyses and large international studies; on the contrary, the way forward for the years to come is to advance the field through a greater number of studies of the unique characteristics of the context of each educational system, its history, culture and local needs. The quest for leadership effectiveness can be better conducted at the local level. In short, the future of school leadership and its effects on student achievement rest on the premise that, even though we are dealing with global concerns and issues, the solutions must be local. School leaders need to be able to understand the complexity of the system and the complexity of the self. They need to be familiar with the potential stumbling-blocks that may exist (both within the self and within the context) and how these obstacles can become challenges that they will need to overcome. School leadership must shape the school and its context in such a way that the teachers who work there can then ideally be more effective in supporting their pupils to achieve better learning outcomes.

Abstract (english):
In a time where the consequences of expanding globalization and social change affect many countries, there should be a renewed interest in processes of political socialization, participation, and identity formation of men and women as global citizens. Due to recent reports of increasing ethnocentrism, xenophobia, political apathy and political distrust in adolescents and young adults in Europe and many other countries around the world, the need to re-examine cognitive, affective, normative and behavioral aspects of political identity formation has become apparent. For more than four decades, research on political socialization and political culture in the Western Industrial World has established that males and females differ in their pathways towards political understanding and in their forms of political engagement. However, most of the studies on political socialization continue to either ignore or merelyreport gender differences in political orientations that were found in their data. Little effort was made by the social sciences to explain these gender differences. Moreover, gender differences vary by country or nation state, which is due to cultural, societal, political, religious or ethnic differences. The major aim of the following special issue on genderspecific political socialization in an international perspective is to elucidate gender variations in political attitudes and political behavior. In an international perspective, five contributions from the US, Australia, Chile and Israel present new findings and insights by asking what it means growing up as a male or female adolescent citizen in the 21st century. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
