Abstract (english):
Educational practitioners have stressed the relevance of providing learners with a set of 21th century skills that will allow them to face current life challenges. Among others this includes communication and social skills such as public speaking, argumentation, negotiation, etc. Besides the acquisition of knowledge and techniques, these skills have the special characteristic that their performance is usually conducted under emotionally charged and stressful situations. Recent advances in technology have allowed the creation of digital applications to support learners with the development of techniques for this type of skills. However, supporting learners on the preparation of a mindset that allows them to perform well under emotionally charged circumstances is an area that technology enhanced learning has practically overlooked. To examine this gap, we developed the Booth, an application designed to get learners into a powerful and resourceful emotional state. In this article we present a two-step user study. Results of the first evaluation show that the use of the Booth induced a positive emotional state on users. Results from the second step suggest that using the Booth helps learners to emotionally prepare for public speaking. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
Studies in Learning Analytics provide concrete examples of how the analysis of direct interactions with learning management systems can be used to optimize and understand the learning process. Learning, however, does not necessarily only occur when the learner is directly interacting with such systems. With the use of sensors, it is possible to collect data from learners and their environment ubiquitously, therefore expanding the use cases of Learning Analytics. For this reason, we developed the Multimodal Learning Hub (MLH), a system designed to enhance learning in ubiquitous learning scenarios, by collecting and integrating multimodal data from customizable configurations of ubiquitous data providers. In this paper, we describe the MLH and report on the results of tests where we explored its reliability to integrate multimodal data. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This contribution describes one the challenges explored in the Fourth LAK Hackathon. This challenge aims at shifting the focus from learning situations which can be easily traced through user-computer interactions data and concentrate more in user-world interaction events, typical of co-located and practice-based learning experiences. This mission, pursued by the multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) community, seeks to bridge the gap between digital and physical learning spaces. The "multimodal" approach consists in combining learners' motoric actions with physiological responses and data about the learning contexts. These data can be collected through multiple wearable sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. This Hackathon table will confront with three main challenges arising from the analysis and valorisation of multimodal datasets: 1) the data collection and storing, 2) the data annotation, 3) the data processing and exploitation. Some research questions which will be considered in this Hackathon challenge are the following: how to process the raw sensor data streams and extract relevant features? Which data mining and machine learning techniques can be applied? How can we compare two action recordings? How to combine sensor data with Experience API (xAPI)? What are meaningful visualisations for these data? (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Pedagogy is at the heart of teaching and learning. Preparing young people to meet new contemporary challenges means to review and update the pedagogies teachers use. However, despite the increased reporting of teachers and schools that are innovating, schools remain largely seen as very resistant places for innovation. To address the importance and challenges of implementing new pedagogies, this paper brings together leading experts to reflect on key areas of pedagogy. In particular, each chapter addresses a pedagogical dimension that together offers a conceptual framework for action. This framework moves beyond a fragmented focus on specific innovations. In doing so, it helps explain how innovative pedagogies may be developed, applied and scaled. Amelia Peterson's first contribution shows how fundamental purpose is to pedagogy, while Hanna Dumont's section explores adaptive teaching as a cross-cutting concept over a range of different pedagogical approaches. Then the paper moves to discuss the importance of understanding pedagogies as combinations, which Amelia Peterson defines as two layers: one combining discrete teaching practices and another that combines approaches to meet long-term educational goals. Marc Lafuente looks first at content domains (mathematics, non-native languages, and socio-emotional learning) and how they relate to pedagogies. He then contributes to the thinking on "new learners" and technology, as important context influencing pedagogical choices and implementation. The final section by Nancy Law is focused on change, through the particular prism of technology-enhanced pedagogical innovations. Her analysis moves towards a theory of change that takes account of the need for alignment at the different levels of the educational system. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
IDeA steht für Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Motivation is a key factor in learning, both in terms of understanding and memorising learning contents. A high degree of motivation will benefit the joy of learning and interest, leading to good learning outcomes. However, motivational problems possibly hinder the learning process and may result in a barrier to learning. Comparable to real-life learning situations, where teaching staff adjust the teaching process to the current learning situation, adapting the presentation of learning content appropriately before the learner's motivation decreases should strengthen learning motivation and therefore learning success. As one main subject to the SensoMot (Schneider et al., 2017) project, it is assessed how motivationally caused learning blockades can be detected early by means of unobtrusive sensors, and learning content can be adapted appropriately. If learning motivation could thus be increased, higher learning success might be effected as well as lower dropout rates in many technology-based learning and teaching scenarios. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This volume brings together educational effectiveness research and international large-scale assessments, demonstrating how the two fields can be applied to inspire and improve each other, and providing readers direct links to instruments that cover a broad range of topics and have been shown to work in more than 70 countries. The book's initial chapters introduce and summarize recent discussions and developments in the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of international large-scale context assessments and provide an outlook on possible future developments. Subsequently, three thematic sections - "Student Background", "Outcomes of Education Beyond Achievement", and "Learning in Schools" - each present a series of chapters that provide the conceptual background for a wide range of important topics in education research, policy, and practice. Each chapter defines a conceptual framework that relates recent findings in the educational effectiveness research literature to current issues in education policy and practice. These frameworks were used to develop interesting and relevant indicators that may be used for meaningful reporting from international assessments, other cross-cultural research, or national studies. Using the example of one particular survey (the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2015)), this volume links all theoretical considerations to fully developed questionnaire material that was field trailed and evaluated in questionnaires for students and their parents as well as teachers and principals in their schools. The primary purposes of this book are to inform readers about how education effectiveness research and international large-scale assessments are already interacting to inform research and policymaking; to identify areas where a closer collaboration of both fields or input from other areas could further improve this work; to provide sound theoretical frameworks for future work in both fields; and finally to relate these theoretical debates to currently available and evaluated material for future context assessments. Abstract:
Learning throughout the life span relies more and more on using information and communication technology (ICT) to acquire new knowledge and skills in both formal and informal learning environments. Thus, learning to use ICT and using ICT to learn have become major premises for successful participation in educational, professional, social, cultural, and civic life. To keep pace with the rapid development of ICT, people need to be able to update their ICT knowledge and skills continuously. A major conditioning personal characteristic that affects the development and adaptation of ICT skills in a self-regulated way is considered to be ICT engagement. This chapter descibes the conceptual origins of this multifaceted construct. At the behavioral level it represents the use of ICT in various contexts, such as at home or school. Most importantly, from a cognitive-motivational perspective it covers the factors that foster the self-determined and self-regulated use of ICT, such as interest in ICT, ICT self-concept, perceived autonomy in ICT use, and social relatedness in using ICT.
