Abstract:
Abstract (english):
From a constructivist perspective on learning, mistakes are seen as natural elements of learning processes. A supportive and constructive way of dealing with student mistakes has shown to affect students' individual motivation and learning performances in a favorable way. In classroom settings, however, making mistakes is not just a personal but also a social event. Dealing with mistakes should therefore be considered as both student-level and classroom-level characteristic. This study investigates three aspects of dealing with mistakes and their relevance for students' achievement and motivation in English as a foreign language by analyzing the aspects at student and classroom level. The aspects are (a) teacher attitude toward mistakes, (b) teacher response to student mistakes, and (c) students' perception of mistakes as useful for learning. Analyzing data of 5266 students from 427 classes in German secondary schools, the results demonstrate that at student level, all three aspects of dealing with mistakes affect students' individual achievement as well as motivation in English language class. At classroom level, none of the aspects affect student average achievement. Two aspects affect student average motivation at the classroom level, namely (a) teacher attitude toward mistakes and (c) students' shared perception of the usefulness of mistakes for learning. Our results show that students' individual and shared perception of dealing with mistakes affect students' motivational and cognitive learning outcomes in different ways. Furthermore, our findings underline the relevance of teachers' attitudes as well as students' perceptions concerning mistakes for student learning and motivation in English as a foreign language class. Abstract:
Advances in computer technology and artificial intelligence create opportunities for developing adaptive language learning technologies which are sensitive to individual learner characteristics. This paper focuses on one form of adaptivity in which the difficulty of learning content is dynamically adjusted to the learner's evolving language ability. A pilot study is presented which aims to advance the (semi-)automatic difficulty scoring of grammar exercise items to be used in dynamic difficulty adaptation in an intelligent language tutoring system for practicing English tenses. In it, methods from item response theory and machine learning are combined with linguistic item analysis in order to calibrate the difficulty of an initial exercise pool of cued gap-filling items (CGFIs) and isolate CGFI features predictive of item difficulty. Multiple item features at the gap, context and CGFI levels are tested and relevant predictors are identified at all three levels. Our pilot regression models reach encouraging prediction accuracy levels which could, pending additional validation, enable the dynamic selection of newly generated items ranging from moderately easy to moderately difficult. The paper highlights further applications of the proposed methodology in the area of adapting language tutoring, item design and second language acquisition, and sketches out issues for future research. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model assumes the interplay of social and dimensional comparisons in the formation of domain-specific academic self-concepts. The present study tests the generalizability of the I/E model assumptions across students from different ability tracks. While the findings from previous studies implied the similar use of social comparisons with students from different ability tracks, evidence has been missing so far whether students from different ability tracks apply dimensional comparisons to the same extent. Students from lower ability tracks are said to be confronted with negative stereotypes and felt deprivation which might enforce or weaken the use of dimensional comparisons. For the analyses, students from the academic track (N = 702) and the vocational track (N = 528) of German secondary schools were included as these two groups represent two extreme groups of ability tracks which might thus maximize the power of detecting differences in the use of social and dimensional comparisons. Both the original I/E model only including math and verbal achievement and self-concepts measures and an I/E model extended to five school subjects (math, German, English, physics, and biology) were examined. The results indicated invariance across school tracks for both the original I/E model and the extended I/E model when controlling for students' gender, socioeconomic status, and cognitive ability. Abstract (english):
Research has shown that academic self-concepts (ASCs) are subject to contextual influences, in particular to the big-fish-little-pond effect (BFLPE). The BFLPE refers to the phenomenon whereby able students report more negative ASC when exposed to learning environments with relatively higher-achieving students. Although the BFLPE has been identified across various educational settings, there is surprisingly little research on its persistence across contexts. The present study fills this gap and explores the lasting consequences of the BFLPE for ASC development after the transition from one educational context to another. It draws on a longitudinal study of N = 1,617 students from Grades 6 to 9, which followed students across the transition from elementary to secondary school. We found indications of cross-sectional BFLPEs in both elementary and secondary schools for all 3 of the ASC dimensions we investigated (general academic, German language arts, and mathematics). Yet, after students had transitioned into secondary schools, the effects of the elementary school context persisted to a certain extent, but this varied by self-concept domain: for general ASC (GASC), some elementary school effects remained during secondary schooling, alongside the new effect of the secondary school context. For German language arts and mathematics self-concepts, the BFLPE from elementary school faded after students transitioned from elementary school. BFLPEs varied by secondary school track for synchronous, cross-sectional effects but not for longitudinal elementary school effects. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
This study assesses students' reports of two facets of parental involvement (i.e., family activity and parents' subjective importance) in a sample of ninth-grade German secondary school students, related to German language (Sample 1:N = 4476) and English language (Sample 2: N = 4440). The aim was to test the direct and indirect relations between the two facets of parental involvement and student achievement and the generalizability of mean levels and patterns of relations across students' migration status. The results did not demonstrate any significant direct relations between both facets of parental involvement and student achievement. However, for both language domains, family activity was found to be indirectly related to student achievement with students' domain-specific academic self-concept serving as a mediator variable. The student sample was divided into four groups of students with different migration status (students and parents born in Germany; only one parent born in Germany; only the student born in Germany; student and parents born abroad). For both language domains, the pattern of relations between the two facets of parental involvement and student achievement was invariant across these groups of students. When considering mean level differences, the students reported similar levels of parents' subjective importance across all the four groups with respect to both German and English languages. Regarding family activity in the domain of German language, students whose parents had both been born abroad reported lower mean levels. Mean differences in the level of family activity in the domain of English language were found to be less clear-cut. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english):
The following contribution analyzes language transfer promoting instruction in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) instruction in 9th grade secondary classes in Germany. By combining data from questionnaires, tests, and video-data, the article sheds light on learning outcomes in the context of language transfer promoting instruction and presents teaching practice of interlanguage reflection in ESL-teaching. Results indicate a positive correlation of language transfer promoting teaching with EFL listening comprehension at the beginning of grade 9. A correlation between language transfer promoting teaching did not show up with text reconstruction. The analysis of selected videos revealed sequences that hint at an attempt to promoting language transfer actually take place in classes of teachers reporting high importance for language transfer promoting teaching. However, these sequences do not display an elaborated language transfer promoting teaching. Language transfer promotion is implemented in a rather implicit way, while referring to German language only. Results indicate the need for elaborated strategies of implementation of language transfer promoting teaching. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
Gender differences in educational outcomes are often reported. However, some evidence suggests that these differences are not consistent but vary with social background. In quantitative research, however, the interaction between gender and social background has been underinvestigated. The present study investigates whether the effect of gender on achievement is moderated by socio-economic status (SES). The sample consists of N = 3935 primary school-children in Berlin (6th grade). The results show that the effect of gender on achievement varies with SES, with a stronger correlation between the achievement of boys and their SES. Taken together, the results of the study suggest a differentiated consideration of the achievement of boys and girls and the importance of considering multiple group identities. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Valid inferences on teaching drawn from students' test scores require that tests are sensitive to the instruction students received in class. Accordingly, measures of the test items' instructional sensitivity provide empirical support for validity claims about inferences on instruction. In the present study, we first introduce the concepts of absolute and relative measures of instructional sensitivity. Absolute measures summarize a single item's total capacity of capturing effects of instruction, which is independent of the test's sensitivity. In contrast, relative measures summarize a single item's capacity of capturing effects of instruction relative to test sensitivity. Then, we propose a longitudinal multilevel item response theory model that allows estimating both types of measures depending on the identification constraints. (DIPF/Orig.)
