Abstract: This article examines the extent to which normative beliefs on acculturation constitute (a) individual resources and risk factors for adolescents facing developmental tasks and (b) institutional norms that define developmental milieus in secondary schools. To what extent do egalitarianism, multiculturalism, assimilationism, and segregationism help or hinder academic and psychosocial adjustment in mid-adolescence? We examined how both individually endorsed beliefs and socially shared beliefs at the 10th-grade cohort level relate to students' academic performance, educational and occupational aspirations, motivational and emotional attachment to school, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. Data came from a random sample of 15- to 17-year-olds in Berlin, Germany, assessed at the end of Grades 9 and 10 (N = 1,992). Multivariate analyses identified egalitarianism and multiculturalism as the most prevalent acculturation beliefs, forming a combined belief pattern that pairs recognition of equality with respect for diversity. At the individual level, this belief pattern was positively related to academic and psychosocial adjustment. Assimilationism beliefs were associated with higher motivational and emotional attachment to school in both minority and majority students. Segregationism beliefs were associated with higher self-esteem in all adolescents regardless of background, but with lower levels of academic performance in immigrant youth. At the grade cohort level, a single bipolar factor (egalitarianism/multiculturalism vs. assimilationism/segregationism) described the institutional diversity culture. An environment characterized by egalitarianism/multiculturalism beliefs was positively associated with motivational and emotional attachment to school but not related to academic adjustment or psychological well-being. Abstract (english): In the wake of COVID-19, study conditions in Europe have changed dramatically. To limit contact between students and teachers, since March 2020 teaching has largely taken place digitally (remotely via digital means) and in private. Because the success of digital learning likely relies on many factors beyond good digital infrastructure condi tions, this article focuses on which aspects, at both the teacher and the student levels, promote digital learning success. The large-scale student survey "Studying in Times of the Corona Pandemic" conducted at German universities and universities of applied sciences in the summer semester of 2020 ofers data on how COVID-19 has afected several aspects of university studying in Germany. Here, we consider this data within the theoretical framework "theory of transactional distance" introduced by Moore (in: Moore (ed) Handbook of distance education, Routledge, 2018), according to which the success of digital teaching is infuenced by dialogue, structure, and learner autonomy. Based on various regression analyses, our results show that several (digital) framework conditions must be created on both the teacher and student levels to achieve suf fcient digital learning success. In this sense, our fndings provide guidance on which aspects institutions of higher education should focus on when developing or updating their digitalization strategies. In accordance with collaborative learning approaches a key factor for learning success appears to be enabling peer-to-peer interactions. This fnding supports our prediction that the possibility of engaging in interactive learning activities is crucial for students' learning experience, as it might reduce the percep tion of transactional distance and allow for social exchange. The strongest predictor of students' learning success turned out to be the (perceived) digital competencies of the teachers. This fnding clearly emphasizes that teachers must be qualifed to address the very specifc challenges of teaching in digital contexts and indicates that universities may need to implement more teacher qualifcation programs. Abstract: This chapter emphasizes the importance of language for the integration of immigrants. First, we summarize findings on the crucial role of language skills for educational success, occupational opportunities, and social inclusion. As the openness of the host society is also a central factor for integration, we next describe how social categorization can be an important source for the development of prejudice, hostility, and extremism. In this context, we highlight the significant role of language as a social category that has the potential to impact positively the openness of host society members towards immigrants. Finally, we summarize two studies demonstrating the importance of language as an intergroup category. Study 1 found evidence that language skills play an important role in secondary school students' openness towards refugee peers, and Study 2 provided some initial indication that language skills are more relevant than cultural similarity for the openness of host society members towards international students at higher education institutions. In sum, this chapter establishes the crucial role of host society language skills from different perspectives and demonstrates that language has a great potential for promoting the successful integration of immigrants.

(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english): One of the central questions in social science research is what predicts socioeconomic success in adulthood. This article investigates the role of self-esteem and its interplay with social background and intelligence in early adolescence in predicting educational attainment and occupational success in adulthood. Specifically, the present study tests for interactions between these factors and examines whether self-esteem, in particular, has a compensatory or amplifying effect on existing (social) background differences. To this end, it draws on data from the longitudinal study Learning Processes, Educational Careers, and Psychosocial Development in Adolescence and Young Adulthood (BIJU), tracking development from the age of 12 to 31 years. The results indicate a positive interaction effect between self-esteem and socioeconomic background in predicting educational attainment. However, this interaction effect was similarly explained by an interaction between socioeconomic background and intelligence. There were no main or interaction effects of self-esteem on occupational status or income. In sum, at least for educational attainment in adulthood, the results point to cumulative advantages of baseline (social) differences (Matthew effects). These were not specific to self-esteem, however, but were also explained by cognitive resources. No evidence was found for compensatory effects between baseline differences in resources. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): When establishing a career in adulthood, two major socioemotional ingredients are expected to affect people's success:
how people act (personality) and what motivates them to act this way (motivation). However, little is known about
whether and how personality and motivation change together and how their possible dynamic interplay predicts success.
We investigated the roles that changes in personality and expectancy beliefs played in explaining occupational success in
4121 participants assessed after high school (Mage ¼ 22.80, SDage ¼ 0.70; 63% female) and about 20 years later. We used
latent change models and moderated structural equation modeling to investigate correlated change and latent change
interactions of personality and expectancy beliefs in predicting success. Results illustrated that besides being related in a
nomological net, personality and expectancy beliefs also illustrated a strong interrelatedness in change across time. We
found the clearest joint change dynamics between emotional stability, conscientiousness, self-concept, and self-efficacy.
Changes in personality and expectancy beliefs were furthermore associated with objective and subjective occupational
success. The results call for a more integrative view on personality-motivation dynamics across time for understanding
the long-term adaptive ingredients of occupational success stories in adulthood.

Abstract (english): The construction-of-understanding ecosystem proves particularly useful because it provides an actionable framework of active learning that can be applied across disciplines. An assumption inherent in the framework is that active-learning practices are beneficial for student achievement in STEM. In this commentary, I have argued that there are prerequisites for this benefit to occur. Active-learning practices are demanding in that students need advanced cognitive and metacognitive capacities to be able to profit from them without being closely guided. The effects of insufficient cognitive and metacognitive capacities become most visible in younger students for whom these capacities are still developing. For example, elementary-school students struggle with constructing examples or drawings of abstract concepts as a result of their immature analogical reasoning skills (Breitwieser & Brod, 2021; Van Meter et al., 2006). This should not be taken to mean that active-learning practices cannot be beneficial for K-12 students, however. Prerequisites differ between practices, and a lack of them can often be counteracted with additional guidance. Instead, this commentary is intended as a pledge to consider prerequisites in order to choose those active-learning practices that are likely to work best for a particular group of students. Abstract: Expectancy-value theory (EVT) proposes that students' appraisals of success expectancy and task value are the main drivers of their study and career choices. Dimensional comparison theory proposes that these beliefs are themselves affected by students comparing their ability across different domains. However, only a few studies have aimed to integrate these approaches and clarify the role of dimensional comparisons within EVT. Using longitudinal data, we aimed to fill this gap by studying within- and cross-domain effects of achievement (grades and test scores), academic self-concept (as a surrogate for expectancy beliefs), and values on German adolescents' (N = 519) high school course choices and their intentions to major in a STEM subject at university. We show that (a) self-concepts predicted course choices, whereas values predicted STEM study intentions; (b) dimensional comparison patterns (positive within-domain and negative across-domain relations) were present; (c) gender differences in course choices were mediated by differences in achievement, self-concept, and value; and (d) there was an incremental gender effect on STEM study intentions above and beyond achievement, self-concept, value, and previous course choices. Furthermore, overall, a model incorporating cross-domain paths representing dimensional comparisons fit the data better than a model without these paths. We conclude that direct and indirect dimensional comparison effects contribute to predicting choices of high school courses and university majors and to understanding gender differences in these choices. We recommend that studies in the EVT framework include cross-domain effects. (DIPF/Orig.)
