Abstract:
We analyze the subtle mechanisms at work in the interaction between families and schools that underlie social inequalities at the transition point from elementary school into secondary-school tracks in Berlin, Germany. We do so by combining quantitative data from a large-scale survey and assessment study (N = 3,935 students and their parents) with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with parents (N = 25) collected during the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 school years. The quantitative analyses show that students from high-socioeconomic status (SES) families were more likely to enter the academic track than were students from low-SES families, even if they performed equally well on a standardized achievement test, had the same grades in school, and received the same track recommendation from their teachers. The qualitative analyses illustrate the many ways in which parents intervene during the transition process, with high-SES parents having particularly effective ways of getting what they want for their children. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
The following paper analyzes the demand for secondary schools over a time period of seven years in the two-tiered school system of the state of Bremen. The results show substantial diff erences in school demand and point to its high stability over time. Differences in the demand for secondary schools are associated with considerable differences in the achievement composition of the student body, whereas the associations with the ethnic student composition were much smaller. Abstract:
Advances in computer technology and artificial intelligence create opportunities for developing adaptive language learning technologies which are sensitive to individual learner characteristics. This paper focuses on one form of adaptivity in which the difficulty of learning content is dynamically adjusted to the learner's evolving language ability. A pilot study is presented which aims to advance the (semi-)automatic difficulty scoring of grammar exercise items to be used in dynamic difficulty adaptation in an intelligent language tutoring system for practicing English tenses. In it, methods from item response theory and machine learning are combined with linguistic item analysis in order to calibrate the difficulty of an initial exercise pool of cued gap-filling items (CGFIs) and isolate CGFI features predictive of item difficulty. Multiple item features at the gap, context and CGFI levels are tested and relevant predictors are identified at all three levels. Our pilot regression models reach encouraging prediction accuracy levels which could, pending additional validation, enable the dynamic selection of newly generated items ranging from moderately easy to moderately difficult. The paper highlights further applications of the proposed methodology in the area of adapting language tutoring, item design and second language acquisition, and sketches out issues for future research. Abstract (english):
Two intensive longitudinal studies examining the association between children's feeling of relatedness to peers at school and their affective well‐being were performed. In Study 1, 110 third and fourth graders reported on their positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) 4 times daily and on their peer relatedness once a day over 4 weeks. Multilevel analyses revealed that children who reported higher peer relatedness on average also reported higher PA and lower NA (between‐person associations). Moreover, on days when children reported higher peer relatedness than usual, they also reported higher PA, but they did not necessarily report lower NA (within‐person associations). In Study 2, 55 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders indicated their PA, NA, and peer relatedness once a day over 2 weeks. We replicated the findings of Study 1 on both levels. The studies showed that feeling related to peers is associated with high PA at school and at home on a daily basis, illustrating the function of peer relatedness in promoting positive well‐being. The findings further demonstrated the necessity of intensive longitudinal studies focusing on within‐person associations and the importance of measuring both PA and NA in order to capture effects on affective well‐being thoroughly. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
Abstract (english):
The contribution presents an attempt to describe challenges posed by unequal learning conditions at primary schools in recent decades, but also to characterize existing inequalities which have recently increased. In the 1960s, school reforms and the abolition of public confessional schools represented responses to unequal learning conditions at primary schools in rural and town areas. Better educational opportunities were also targeted by lowering class frequencies. However, no successful responses have yet been found to address disparities in educational opportunities caused by student poverty and immigrant background across regions, as is demonstrated for the example of North-Rhine Westphalia. Abstract:
(DIPF/Orig.)
