Abstract:
Log data from educational assessments attract more and more attention and large-scale assessment programs have started providing log data as scientific use files. Such data generated as a by-product of computer-assisted data collection has been known as paradata in survey research. In this paper, we integrate log data from educational assessments into a taxonomy of paradata. To provide a generic framework for the analysis of log data, finite state machines are suggested. Beyond its computational value, the specific benefit of using finite state machines is achieved by separating platform-specific log events from the definition of indicators by states. Specifically, states represent filtered log data given a theoretical process model, and therefore, encode the information of log files selectively. The approach is empirically illustrated using log data of the context questionnaires of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). We extracted item-level response time components from questionnaire items that were administered as item batteries with multiple questions on one screen and related them to the item responses. Finally, the taxonomy and the finite state machine approach are discussed with respect to the definition of complete log data, the verification of log data and the reproducibility of log data analyses. Abstract:

Abstract (english):
Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs have gained global popularity and are increasingly used in all areas of daily life, including learning and assessment activities. To support different kinds of learning and assessment content, a versatile and comprehensive system is desirable. In addition, other aspects of long-term assessments have to be covered such as security, data protection and adaptivity, e.g. to new schedules or items. In this paper, we present the concept and realization of an Android-based mobile assessment system especially designed for school usage. It has been used already in several research studies in elementary schools, e.g. to measure daily fluctuations of cognitive performance capabilities.

Abstract (english):
Classmate PC (CMPC) is the only laptop included in the Hungarian school supply list selected for purchase through grant applications with an inbuilt pedagogical model. The objective of this research is to document and evaluate phases in the life of CMPC laptops in Hungarian schools, to highlight the patterns of its current and future uses. Based on survey and field observation data of teachers and system managers, we also describe personal and infrastructure requirements needed for minimum and optimum utilisation of its potentials. This paper reports findings about: (1) how often used the laptops by the teachers in the classroom? (2) what resources are used by teachers to prepare their laptop based teaching? (3) for what purposes are networked laptops used? (4) what types of software and hardware development do teachers consider important for more frequent use?
