Abstract:
The worst performance rule (WPR) predicts that the slowest trials in reaction time (RT) tasks are more strongly related to intelligence than the fastest trials. To date, the WPR was observed mainly in young adults. The present study examined if the WPR holds not only in young adults but also in children and older adults in three kinds of RT tasks (simple RT, choice RT, and inhibition). Results showed that in each age group slowest and fastest trials were related to intelligence but the former correlated with intelligence to a greater extent than the latter. These results support the assumption that the WPR can be generalized across the lifespan.

Abstract:
We investigated age differences in associations among self-reported experiences of tense and energetic arousal, physiological activation indicated by heart rate, and working-memory performance in everyday life. The sample comprised 92 participants aged 14-83 years. Data were collected for 24 hr while participants pursued their normal daily routines. Participants wore an ambulatory biomonitoring system that recorded their cardiac and physical activity. Using mobile phones as assessment devices, they also provided an average of 7 assessments of their momentary experiences of tense arousal (feeling nervous) and energetic arousal (feeling wide-awake) and completed 2 trials of a well-practiced working-memory task. Experiences of higher energetic arousal were associated with higher heart rate in participants younger than 50 years of age but not in participants older than that, and energetic arousal was unrelated to within-person fluctuations in working-memory performance. Experiences of tense arousal were associated with higher heart rate independent of participants' age. Tense arousal and physiological activation were accompanied by momentary impairments in working-memory performance in middleaged and older adults but not in younger individuals. Results suggest that psychological arousal experiences are associated with lower working-memory performance in middle-aged and older adults when they are accompanied by increased physiological activation and that the same is true for physiological activation deriving from other influences. Hence, age differences in cognitive performance may be exaggerated when the assessment situation itself elicits tense arousal or occurs in situations with higher physiological arousal arising from affective experiences, physical activity, or circadian rhythms.

Abstract:
The brain shrinks with age, but the timing of this process and the extent of its malleability are unclear. We measured changes in regional brain volumes in younger (age 20-31) and older (age 65-80) adults twice over a 6 months period, and examined the association between changes in volume, history of hypertension, and cognitive training. Between two MRI scans, 49 participants underwent intensive practice in three cognitive domains for 100 consecutive days, whereas 23 control group members performed no laboratory cognitive tasks. Regional volumes of seven brain structures were measured manually and adjusted for intracranial volume. We observed significant mean shrinkage in the lateral prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, the caudate nucleus, and the cerebellum, but no reliable mean change of the prefrontal white matter, orbital-frontal cortex, and the primary visual cortex. Individual differences in change were reliable in all regions. History of hypertension was associated with greater cerebellar shrinkage. The cerebellum was the only region in which significantly reduced shrinkage was apparent in the experimental group after completion of cognitive training. Thus, in healthy adults, differential brain shrinkage can be observed in a narrow time window, vascular risk may aggravate it, and intensive cognitive activity may have a limited effect on it.

Abstract:
Kulturelle Bildung ist Teil einer umfassenden Grundbildung des Menschen. Sie dient der Entfaltung individueller expressiver Bedürfnisse und Interessen, der Tradierung kultureller und musisch-ästhetischer Praktiken und ermöglicht die aktive Beteiligung am kulturellen Leben. Das zunehmende Interesse an Daten zur Situation kultureller Bildung in Deutschland spiegelt sich im Auftrag an die Autorengruppe Bildungsberichterstattung, in den Bildungsbericht 2012 das Schwerpunktthema "Kulturelle/musisch-ästhetische Bildung im Lebenslauf" aufzunehmen. In diesem Beitrag wird der Begriff der kulturellen Bildung zunächst kurz umrissen und abgegrenzt. Danach wird auf den Indikatorenbegriff und die verfügbaren Datengrundlagen eingegangen. Im Hauptteil werden dann die konzeptionellen Überlegungen zu einer datengestützten Darstellung der kulturellen Bildung ausführlicher dargestellt, um am Ende Perspektiven für Verbesserungen bei der Dauerbeobachtung der kulturellen Bildung in Deutschland zu entwickeln.
Abstract (english):
The arts form an integral part of human education. Arts education contributes to the development of the individual's expressive needs and interests. It serves to pass on cultural and aesthetic practices and enables active participation in the cultural life of society. Over the last years, the demand for data has been growing, and in 2012, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), together with the Standing Conference of the Länder Ministers of Education (KMK), commissioned the German national report on education with a specific focus on "cultural and aesthetic education over the life-span". The present contribution defines the scope of this thematic focus and presents an overview of available data sources for its operationalization. It describes the process of structuring the domain, the construction of statistics and indicators, and outlines ways for further improving the monitoring of arts education in Germany.

Abstract:
Depuis plusieurs années, les chercheurs en psychologie développementale et cognitive reconnaissent l'importance de la variabilité interindividuelle. Cette conscience a motivé de nombreux travaux empiriques à analyser d'autres indices que ceux concernés par les tendances centrales. Néanmoins, le concept de variabilité est trop souvent interprété comme synonyme de différences interindividuelles, en dépit d'une littérature croissante montrant l'existence et l'importance de la variabilité intra-individuelle (Vii). Nous présenterons l'échantillon, le plan expérimental et les résultats généraux de la Geneva Variability Study (GVS), une étude à large échelle dont le but est de mieux comprendre le développement cognitif, en considérant explicitement et conjointement la variabilité inter- et intra-individuelle. Deux cent un enfants (âgés de 9 à 12 ans), 137 jeunes adultes (18 à 35 ans) et 122 adultes âgés de 60 ans et plus ont participé à cette étude. Les participants ont réalisé une tâche de temps de réaction simple, deux tâches de temps de réaction à choix binaire, deux tâches de vitesse perceptive, deux tâches d'inhibition et deux tâches de mémoire de travail. En outre, des épreuves d'intelligence fluide et cristallisée ainsi que des mesures de santé subjective ont été administrées. En ce qui concerne les tâches de temps de réaction, chaque épreuve contient un nombre suffisamment important d'essais afin de permettre la quantification de la variabilité intra-individuelle (plus de 100 essais). Des indicateurs standards de Vii, tels que l'écart-type et le coefficient de variation individuels, ont été utilisés dans les analyses. De plus, nos analyses se basent sur des indicateurs moins fréquemment utilisés, tels que les paramètres ex-Gaussiens, en particulier tau et sigma, issus des distributions individuelles des temps de réponse. Nous présenterons dans un premier temps les résultats concernant la comparaison, pour chacune des tâches, de ces divers indices de Vii et du niveau de performance. Nous présenterons ensuite les résultats d'analyses multivariées visant à étudier les relations, pour chaque indice de Vii, entre les diverses tâches. Les données indiquent d'importantes différences individuelles et d'âge dans la Vii et cela quel que soit le niveau d'analyse. De façon générale, les enfants représentent le groupe le plus variable (avec des différences d'âge non négligeables à l'intérieur de ce groupe), suivi des adultes âgés, alors que les adultes jeunes sont quant à eux les moins variables. Les limites et perspectives de cette étude seront discutées à la lumière des recherches récentes en psychologie cognitive sur la Vii.

Abstract:
Der Bericht hat eine möglichst detaillierte Analyse der sozialen Lage der Beschäftigten im Bildungswesen anhand des Mikrozensus aus dem Jahre 2005 zum Ziel. Die Motivation zu dieser Untersuchung ergibt sich aus den unbefriedigenden Informationen über die soziale Lage des pädagogischen Personals im Bildungswesen, die sowohl berufliche als auch private Aspekte betreffen, obwohl die Beschäftigten im Bildungswesen zentral für dessen Leistungsfähigkeit sind. Die vorliegende Untersuchung hat zwar primär einen deskriptiven Charakter, dennoch soll sie aber auch einen relativ neuen Ansatzpunkt sowohl in methodischer als auch in konzeptioneller Hinsicht für die Lehrerforschung markieren, denn die Untersuchung geht sekundäranalytisch vor und beschreibt die soziale Situation des pädagogischen Personals im Vergleich zu anderen Berufsgruppen. Abstract (english):
The first meetings on motivation in Europe were called the Workshop in Achievement and Task Motivation. In an effort to acknowledge these roots we wish to explicitly address the wide range of human domains for which motivation are important. We hope that the 2012 ICM conference will bring together all researchers who are interested in better understanding human motivation e.g. from learning, school, sport, occupational, developmental, and social psychology.

Abstract (english):
Intraindividual variations in the behavior and experience of humans and interindividual differences within these variations are in the focus of developmental scientists. In this paper the use of diaries as instruments for longitudinal data collection is discussed. Diaries prove to be an appropriate method for measuring human processes and can be applied to every age group by either self-observation or participant observation. They can cover the whole lifespan and a broad set of contents such as relationships, stress, self-regulation, learning, clinical issues and training content. On the basis of diaries it is possible to collect and analyze data with a high level of ecological validity and a variety of sophisticated statistical methods. Statistical assumptions and examples of developmental applications and ways of analyzing time series data gathered from diaries are given. Furthermore, two studies that used diaries and time series analysis in developmental research are presented.

Abstract (english):
Owing to the increasingly fast development of media and especially the advancement of computer technology in recent decades, the topic of ICT integration in classrooms is being intensively discussed on different levels and media educators argue about the missing link between school education and the use of ICT in schools. In this respect, ICT-related competencies of teachers are supposed to play an important role, but approaches assessing ICT-related competencies - in general as well as in terms of the teacher profession - rarely exist and, thus, extensive data on ICT literacy of teachers is missing. The presented article focuses on identifying ICT knowledge of German teachers and teacher trainees, taken as a central aspect of media and ICT literacy, and in this respect especially addresses age-related and gender issues as well as different levels of ICT knowledge.

Abstract (english):
Face cognition is considered a specific human ability, clearly differentiable from general cognitive functioning. Its specificity is primarily supported by cognitive-experimental and neuroimaging research, but recently also from an individual differences perspective. However, no comprehensive behavioral data are available, which would allow estimating lifespan changes of the covariance structure of face-cognition abilities and general cognitive functioning as well as age-differences in face cognition after accounting for interindividual variability in general cognition. The present study aimed to fill this gap. In an age-heterogeneous (18 82 years) sample of 448 adults, we found no factorial dedifferentiation between face cognition and general cognition. Age-related differences in face memory were still salient after taking into account changes in general cognitive functioning. Face cognition thus remains a specific human ability compared with general cognition, even until old age. We discuss implications for models of cognitive aging and suggest that it is necessary to include more explicitly special social abilities in those models.
