Abstract: Lesekompetenz ist die zentrale Grundlage für das gesamte schulische sowie außerschulische Lernen, gesellschaftliche Teilhabe und den weiteren Lebensweg der Schülerinnen und Schüler. Sie ermöglicht es, Informationen aus schriftlichem Material zu entnehmen, Inhalte zu verknüpfen, Schlussfolgerungen zu ziehen und Inhalte, Quellen sowie Intentionen kritisch zu reflektieren. Seit nun 20 Jahren ermöglicht die Internationale Grundschul-Lese-Untersuchung (IGLU) die Beschreibung des Stands und der Bedingungsfaktoren der Schlüsselkompetenz Lesen am Ende der vierten Klassenstufe im internationalen Vergleich. Die Erhebung 2021 fand im Kontext besonderer Bedingungen statt: Es wurden Grundschulkinder in den Blick genommen, die etwas mehr als ein Jahr lang unter den Bedingungen der COVID-19-Pandemie-Schutzmaßnahmen beschult wurden. Erstmals können durch die kontinuierliche Studienteilnahme Deutschlands seit 2001 neben der wichtigen Kernfrage der internationalen Verortung der mittleren Lesekompetenz von Viertklässlerinnen und Viertklässlern in Deutschland Informationen zum Trend dieser Befunde für die Zeit von 20 Jahren dargestellt werden. Damit erlauben die Befunde von IGLU 2021 auch eine Antwort auf die drängende Frage, inwieweit es in Deutschland gelungen ist, die nach dem PISA-Schock 2000 durch die Kultusministerkonferenz formulierten Ziele für die Weiterentwicklung der Bildung in Deutschland zu erreichen. Abstract: Mit der PISA-Studie werden grundlegende Kompetenzen von Fünfzehnjährigen gegen Ende der Pflichtschulzeit erfasst. Ziel ist es, Aussagen darüber zu treffen, wie gut die Jugendlichen auf eine erfolgreiche Teilhabe an der modernen Gesellschaft vorbereitet sind. Die Ergebnisse der PISA-Studie ermöglichen alle drei Jahre den internationalen Vergleich von Kompetenzen Fünfzehnjähriger in den Bereichen Naturwissenschaften, Mathematik und Lesen und damit Aussagen über die Wirksamkeit von Bildungssystemen. Mit der PISA-Studie 2018 begann der dritte Zyklus und zum dritten Mal war Lesen die Hauptdomäne. Die Rahmenkonzeption der Lesekompetenz wurde für die PISA-Studie 2018 einer Revision unterzogen und berücksichtigt nun die sich verändernde Lesepraxis, die mit der Nutzung digitaler Medien einhergeht. Abstract: Der nationale Berichtsband stellt die Ergebnisse der Schülerinnen und Schüler in Deutschland aus der PISA-Studie 2018 vor und setzt sie in Relation zu den Ergebnissen in anderen Staaten. Der Schwerpunkt der Erhebungen und Auswertungen liegt dabei auf der Lesekompetenz. Die Rahmenkonzeption der Lesekompetenz wurde für die PISA-Studie 2018 im Vergleich zu den vorigen Runden einer Revision unterzogen und berücksichtigt nun die sich verändernde Lesepraxis, die mit der Nutzung digitaler Medien einhergeht. Es werden leistungsbezogene Variablen genauso wie motivationale Orientierungen, Einstellungen und Verhalten erfasst, die für die Lesekompetenz wichtig sein können. Daneben wird der Beitrag der sozialen Herkunft und des Zuwanderungshintergrunds für die Lesekompetenzen untersucht. Darüber hinaus werden die Kompetenzen der Jugendlichen in der Mathematik und den Naturwissenschaften vorgestellt und diskutiert. (DIPF/Verlag).

Abstract: Die mittlere Lesekompetenz der Fünfzehnjährigen in Deutschland liegt bei der PISA-Studie 2018 signifikant über dem OECD-Durchschnitt. Der Mittelwert der Lesekompetenz der Fünfzehnjährigen in Deutschland unterscheidet sich 2018 nicht signifikant von den deutschen Durchschnittswerten bei den PISA-Studien 2009 und 2015, ist aber deutlich höher als bei PISA 2000. Die Gruppe der besonders leseschwachen Schülerinnen und Schüler ist im Vergleich zu anderen lesestarken Staaten verhältnismäßig groß und entspricht in etwa dem OECD-Durchschnitt. Die Gruppe der besonders lesestarken Jugendlichen ist in Deutschland hingegen signifikant großer als im Durchschnitt der OECD-Staaten. Die differenzierten Analysen zeigen, dass ein relativ hoher Anteil der Gymnasiastinnen und Gymnasiasten bei PISA 2018 hochkompetent im Lesen ist und diese Gruppe seit PISA 2009 deutlich gewachsen ist. Allerdings gibt es insbesondere an nicht gymnasialen Schularten einen hohen Anteil leseschwacher Jugendlicher, der sowohl im Vergleich zu 2009 als auch im Vergleich zu 2015 bedeutsam angestiegen ist. Abstract: The proposed project focuses on the comprehension of multiple documents in university students. Although strategies and skills are required to achieve a comprehensive understanding of multiple documents for studying successfully, many students struggle with important parts of this process. The proposed project seeks to investigate how interindividual differences in the representation of a task will affect students' comprehension, and examines the effectiveness of a short-term intervention on the students' performance and behavior when dealing with multiple documents. Abstract (english): Background: Researchers often report and discuss gender differences. However, recent research has drawn attention to interaction effects between gender and other social categories. Aims: This study analysed the development of disparities in students' reading‐related self‐concept, intrinsic motivation, and behaviour, as they relate to differences in gender and socio‐economic family background. Drawing on expectancy‐value theory, we regarded reading‐related self‐concept, motivation, and behaviour as key to explaining the growing differences between boys and girls in adolescence. Specifically, we focused on the interaction between gender and socio‐economic background in children, which has been discussed in the context of moderating gender differences but not in the context of reading‐related attitudes and behaviour. Sample: The investigation is based on a longitudinal sample of N = 717 German students between third and sixth grades. Method: We used questionnaire data from both students and parents. To compare students' development across time, we applied multigroup latent growth curve models. Results: We found evidence of increasing gender differences, which were also moderated by the socio‐economic status (SES) of parents: a gender gap either already existed (intrinsic motivation and reading behaviour) or intensified (reading self‐concept and reading behaviour) between third and sixth grades. The interaction of gender and SES seemed particularly important for reading self‐concept, with the gender gap growing less substantially for higher‐SES children. Moreover, this pattern persisted for reading self‐concept, even when controlling for achievement differences. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that gender, social background, and the interaction of the two are relevant for development in the domain of reading, even in young children. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): A critical evaluation of results to find useful information is essential when doing a web search. In this study, we investigated the evaluation skills of secondary school students, based on their behavior in selecting links from a search engine result page (SERP). To clarify the role of reading when evaluating online information, we assessed students' individual reading skills on word, sentence, and text level. Data from 416 15-year-old students participating in a computer based German add-on study to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2012 were investigated. Using generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs), it was found that reading skills affected the ability to evaluate online information. These effects were influenced by the distinctiveness of information in relevance and students' navigation to subsequent SERPs or websites. The results are interpreted to show that skilled readers are able to allocate their cognitive resources more efficiently than less skilled readers when evaluating online information. Implications are discussed in terms of underlying cognitive processes when making web search decisions. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Receiving and using web-based information has become part of everyday life, but the non-linear presentation of information can make considerable demands on cognitive resources, affecting text comprehension. This study examined whether memory updating predicts students' comprehension of digital hypertext over and above skills in reading linearly structured text, and whether this association is affected by particular characteristics of reading tasks, the hypertext and individual reading behavior. Measures included reading comprehension as assessed via hypertext (digital reading) and linear text (linear reading) as well as memory updating among 15-year-old German students (N = 288). The number of nodes in a hypertext and cognitive reading operations required for task processing were regarded as task characteristics. Indicators of reader behavior were derived from log files. The results demonstrated a general effect of memory updating on digital reading over and above linear reading. This effect was not affected by the number of available nodes but by cognitive reading operations and individual reader behavior. Implications for students' cognitive processing of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract (english): Reading and understanding digital text that is organized in a non-linear hypertext format can be challenging for students as it requires a more self-directed selection of text pieces compared to reading linear texts. This study aims at investigating how individual differences in students' skills in comprehending digital text can be explained by their navigation behavior and various underlying skills. Students' navigation behavior was operationalized by their selection of task-relevant hypertext pages; students' abilities in terms of reading linear texts, dealing with computer interfaces more generally, and evaluating the usefulness of online information were considered as underlying skills. We hypothesized that basic computer skills and evaluating online information would explain performance in digital reading above and beyond reading skills measured with linear texts. These effects were expected to be mediated by navigation behavior. A subsample of 15-year-old German students who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012 was investigated (N = 888). The results confirmed the hypothesized mediation between linear reading, navigation behavior, and digital reading. Moreover, navigation behavior also mediated the relation between basic computer skills and digital reading but not the relation between evaluating online information and digital reading. Implications regarding processes in digital reading and navigation of hypertexts are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract: A model of online reading engagement is outlined. This model proposes that online reading engagement predicts dedication in digital reading. Dedication in digital reading according to the model is reflected in task-adaptive navigation, and task-adaptive navigation predicts digital reading performance over and above print reading skill. Information engagement is assumed to positively predict task-adaptive navigation, while social engagement is assumed to negatively predict task-adaptive navigation. These hypotheses were tested using OECD PISA 2009 Digital Reading Assessment data from 17 countries and economies (N = 29,395). Individual task responses served as the primary unit of analysis. Linear mixed models were used to predict navigation behavior from the interaction of information and social online reading engagement with navigation demands. High information engagement was associated with more task-adaptive navigation behavior, as shown by significant positive interactions between information engagement and tasks' navigation demands. In contrast, high social engagement was associated with less adaptive navigation behavior, as shown by negative interactions between social engagement and navigation demands. Generalized linear mixed models were used to predict task performance by the interaction of navigation demands and navigation behavior. Adaptive navigation behavior predicted digital reading task performance, as shown by significant interactions between navigation behavior and navigation demands. These results are in support of the proposed model of online reading engagement. (DIPF/Orig.)
