Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
This document is primarily intended for implementers of DDI-based metadata stores who are considering different technical options for housing and managing their metadata. The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) metadata specification6 is expressed in the form of XML schema. With version 3, the DDI specification has become quite complex, including 21 namespaces and 846 elements7. Organizations employing DDI, or considering doing so, may want to 1. store and manage the metadata elements in relational databases, for reasons of integration with existing systems, familiarity with the concepts of relational databases (such as Structured Query Language), systems performance, and/or other reasons; 2. select only the subset of the available DDI metadata elements that is of utility to their work, and have the flexibility of capturing metadata they need that would not fit into the DDI model. This paper discusses advantages and disadvantages of the relational database approach to managing DDI. It also describes methods for modeling DDI in relational databases and for formally defining subsets of DDI to employ in this environment.

Abstract:
Abstract (english):
At present, no central long-term storage service exists for primary research data in the disciplines of pedagogy and educational science. Educationally relevant data are made accessible via interdisciplinary research data centres, but there is a trend toward the institutionalisation of services specialising in educational research. The inter- and multi-disciplinary nature of educational research goes along with highly divergent types of research data. Some examples in the field are quantitative-statistical data from international comparative assessments in empirical educational research or qualitative data from the videographic documentation of instruction or from Historical educational research. Besides aspects of data protection, the development of general standards for metadata for the domain presents a particular challenge.

Abstract (english):
In this paper the term "intra-linking" is focused to describe capabilities needed in research to create and re-arrange entities and properties of research objects. Therein, it is argued that this capability of intra-linking or re-arranging has to be taken into account to address adequately potentials for a lightweight virtual research environment (VRE). Such a VRE is exemplified by a particular realization based on Semantic MediaWiki technology, in the field of history of education, dealing with educational lexica and reference books. The term "intra-linking" serves to articulate capabilities needed by research practices in the humanities as well as specific potentials of semantic web use in this field.

Abstract (english):
Virtual research environments (VREs) aim to enhance research practice and have been identified as drivers for changes in libraries. This paper argues that VREs in combination with Semantic Web technologies offer a range of possibilities to align research with library practices. This main claim of the article is exemplified by a metadata integration process of bibliographic data from libraries to a VRE which is based on Semantic MediaWiki. The integration process rests on three pillars: MediaWiki as a web-based repository, Semantic MediaWiki annotation mechanisms, and semi-automatic workflow management for the integration of digital resources. Thereby, needs of scholarly research practices and capacities for interactions are taken into account. The integration process is part of the design of Semantic MediaWiki for Collaborative Corpora Analysis (SMW-CorA) which uses a concrete research project in the history of education as a reference point for an infrastructural distribution. Semantic MediaWiki thus provides a light-weight environment offering a framework for re-using heterogeneous resources and a flexible collaborative way of conducting research.
